(Call Ken for details (440) ) OTHER NEWS AND VIEWS Our September 10 th meeting was chaired by Gretchen Schuler representing the Scholarship Foundation. She reported all but one of this year s scholarship awardees have submitted the proper paper work in order to have their (Continued on page 2)

2 (Continued from page 1) respective colleges receive the scholarship money. Gretchen also reported that we had three students apply for a renewal and all three will receive $750 each. It was recommended that the club again award $20,000 in scholarships in May In addition, the inaugural Fat Head s 5K should yield additional scholarship money. The meeting on September 17 th served two purposes: The monthly Board meeting and the induction of our newest member, Terry Smith. Minutes of the Board meeting have been sent to members under a separate cover. Our monthly collection in support of the Oxcart Food Pantry yielded $42. Terry Smith has fascinated the club several times in the past with his ability to recite word-forword long passages, such as the Declaration Erin and Terry Smith with President Laurette of Independence and Martin Luther King s I have a dream speech. With his wife, Erin, as witness, we were happy to welcome Terry as a member! On Wednesday the 19 th, Ken Neuzil set up a table at the North Olmsted Recreation s Senior Appreciation Open House. He passed out (no, there s more to the sentence!) some Club information material and some Please join us for a Monday meeting cards. On the morning of the 20 th, five Kiwanis members attended the first Key Club meeting of the school year and the first in the new school. Members Stan Ball, Tom Herbster, Glenn Knight, Ken Neuzil, and Howard Luke were mightily impressed with the new facility, as they should be. Later that evening, President Laurette Tully and Glenn Knight attended the Division 14 meeting at Porter Library while Ken Neuzil and Tom Herbster attended the Community Council Board meeting. Tom will be stepping up to the presidency of Community Council in November for a two-year term. Newly inducted into the club the previous week, we put Terry Smith to work the following Monday, September 24 th. With his amazing ability to memorize, Terry recited Charles Krauthammer s final (Page 2) column when he knew he had only weeks to live, Frederick Douglass s address given in 1884 at a Women s Suffrage Movement meeting in support of the movement, and the inauguration speech of Terry Smith with President Laurette John F. Kennedy given in January By the way, Terry was able to memorize and deliver all this while at the same time, rehearsing for The Murder Room at the Clague Playhouse! It was at this meeting that the club welcomed Tom and Anne Cornelius from the Fairview Park club as guests. Tim has been the chairman of the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation and he presented a check for $500 to Amber Pierce-Smith destined to go to the Forest Elementary School playground fund. This brings the amount we can spend on new playground equipment at Forest up to $5,000. Amber organized and presented the Murder Mystery in May that produced about $3,000 toward the goal. Other contributors included the local homeowner s association, the Forest PTA, and the Junior Women s Club. Many President of ODKF Tom Cornelius and Amber Pierce- Smith thanks to all those generous people and organizations! Kiwanis members Ken Neuzil and Tom Herbster attended the Community Council general meeting on September 25 th. Barb Schirhart has volunteered to be the Kiwanis representative to that organization. Three members, Ken Neuzil, Glenn Knight, and Dave Dillon attended the Division 14 Installation of the new officers for the division at the Cretan Center on September 27th. We welcome Charles Byrd as our new Lt. Governor. To wrap up a very busy month, Kiwanis members helped the Olmsted Historical Society celebrate (Continued on page 3)

3 (Continued from page 2) Pumpkinville 2018 at Frostville on Sunday, September 30 th. We roasted 30 dozen ears of sweet corn to serve to the crowd. Despite a few semiburned fingertips, we had a great time. Kids from the NOHS Key Club and the SITES class combined to help younger children enjoy the kids games. Thanks to Bob Schirhart for building the games and to Key Club advisers Laura Thogmartin and Lisa Rosenberg, and to SITES teachers Jeff Zullo, Cheryl Huffer, and Matt Rundall for arranging for all those great students to work and make the day a special one! Civilized humanical relationships. Spontanooity We go to (Legion) meetings. We attend them there, waddya call, secret crocuses. 10 bucks puts a whole different complexity on the situation.
