1 AWANA Puppet program. Used for AWANA club banquet. Note 1- AWANA can be changed to your children's group name if other than an AWANA club. Note 2 - replace name "Mr. Unger" with the real name of actual youth group leader. Note 3 - in this script the upcoming holiday is Easter. Script can easily be changed to make reference to Christmas or any other church holiday season. Characters: Jimmy - kind of off-the-wall character MaryLou - the "I told-you so" little kid Jessie - the more mature character Jimmy comes on stage, whistling or humming a song, looks around, Jimmy: Yikes, there's people out there! Jimmy retreats backstage. Puppets speak from backstage.. MaryLou. People? Oh, Jimmy, you're dreaming again! Who could be out there, after all it's a Saturday night. Nobody's gonna be around the church on a Saturday night for Pete's sake! Jimmy: Well, I'm tellin' you guys, there's people out there, lottsa people! Jessie: Oh, you two! You're both acting silly! Now then, both of you, Jimmy and MaryLou, go out and see if there really is somebody out there, and if there is just check and see who they are. Never know, if they're doing some fun stuff, we just might want to join in! Jimmy: Well, I'm not going out there, Jessie! I'm too shy to go out there with all those people out there! MaryLou: Look at the little scairdee Jimmy! Afraid to go into the church 'case something hurts him! You're a scairdee cat, Jimmy, that's what you are! Jimmy: Am not! MaryLou: Are too! Jimmy: Am not! MaryLou: Are too! Jimmy: Am..... Jessie: Would you cut it out, both of you! You're acting like, like, like a, a, pair of, of, sillies, that's what! Now then, both of you! (screams) Get out there, now! Jessie pushes Jimmy and MaryLou out onto the stage, they try to hide their eyes, slowly peek around, see the people, quickly go off stage. MaryLou: You were right Jimmy! 2 Jimmy: Didn't I tell you, huh, huh, didn't I tell you? Now who's the scairdee cat, MaryLou? Jessie: Look, now both of you are being silly! So there's people out there. So what? Now look here, both of you, come with me, we'll all go out and see who they are. You know, really! I've ever seen two people like you guys. MaryLou: Well they look real scary, but if you'll come out with us Jessie, maybe... Jimmy: Yeh, Jessie, we'll follow you out there. Jessie: Oh, come on! Let's go! Jessie comes out on stage, Jimmy and MaryLou come out, hiding behind Jessie, looking over Jessie's shoulder. MaryLou: See, didn't we tell you? See all the people? Jimmy: Yeh, all the....scarey... people! See, there's some big giants and there's.. MaryLou: Eeeeyiiiikkkeeesss! Let's get outta here before those giants.... Jessie: Would you two just relax! There's no such thing as scarey giants! And anyways, all I see is a bunch of boys and girls, and some grownups too! MaryLou: No such thing as scarey giants? Just tell me then, smarty pants, who is that guy over there if not a scarey giant? Tell me that will'ya, tell me, huh? Jessie: Where, over there? That's not a scarey giant! That's Mr. Unger! Jimmy: Mr. Unger? The scarey giant's name is Mr. Unger? How'd you know the scarey giant's name, Jessie? Jessie: For the last and final time, he is not a scarey giant, his name is Mr. Unger! Have you got that! MaryLou: But maybe sometimes Mr. Unger's a scarey... Jessie: MaryLou! Listen up and listen good! His name is Mr. Unger! Mr. Unger never has been, nor shall he ever be, a scarey giant! Jimmy: What if only on Saturday nights he was a... Jessie: Never! You two got it? Never, ever, ever is Mr. Unger a scarey giant! Never! MaryLou: Maybe he'd sometimes..... Jessie: (screams) Never, never, never, never! Mr. Unger is never a scarey giant! Now, then, Mr. Unger is the AWANA leader here at our church. MaryLou: Ahha! I suspected as much! An AWANA leader! A scarey AWANA leader! Let's get outta here while we can! AWANA Night Page - 2

3 Jimmy: Wow! You mean Mr. Unger is an AWANA leader who'll come and catch us and,... wait a minute what would a scarey AWANA leader do to us if he caught us, anyways? MaryLou: You don't know? Why he'd, that is to say, he'd, OK, well sometimes, if he caught you he'd,.... Jimmy: See MaryLou, you're just making all this up, aren't you? MaryLou: Am not! Jimmy: Are too! MaryLou: Am not! Jimmy: Are... Jessie: (screams) Alright already! I can't put up with too much more from you two! Now then, like I told you, Mr. Unger's the AWANA leader, and the boys and girls here are from the AWANA group. MaryLou: AWANA? AWANA, what's that? Jimmy: I know, I know! I learned to do that once. MaryLou: Learned? Learned to do what? Jimmy: To count like that. You know, a-one-ah, a-two-ah, ah-three-ah, like that! Jessie: Oh brother! MaryLou: Listen, guys! I got a knock-knock joke for you! Jessie: A knock-knock joke? You've gotta be kidding! MaryLou: No, come on, knock-knock... Jessie: I don't believe I'm actually doing this, but, OK, I'll go along with your silly little knock-knock game. MaryLou: All right, now then, knock-knock Jessie: Who's there? MaryLou: AWANA Jessie: AWANA what? MaryLou: AWANA disha ice cream!... Get it? AWANA.... AWANA disha ice cream! Get it? Wow, that was good! Really good! I can sure tell knock-knock jokes! Jimmy: That truly had to be the very sickest of sick jokes, I mean,... AWANA Night Page - 3

4 Jessie: If you guys want to listen up for a minute I can tell you about AWANA. Jimmy: You know about AWANA? How come? How'd you learn about AWANA? MaryLou: Oh yeh, Jessie, like what d'you know about AWANA anyways, huh? Jessie: I know that AWANA is a boys and girls club where they have a lot of fun. MaryLou: Oh, yeh, well what do they do at this AWANA club, huh, tell me that will ya? Jessie: They do lots of fun stuff, and they play games, and mostly they learn about stuff from the Bible. Jimmy: From the Bible, at a boys and girls club? I thought only grown-ups learn about the Bible. MaryLou: Lot you know, Jimmy, kids can learn lottsa stuff from the Bible too, like at Sunday School. Jimmy: Yeh, well maybe at Sunday School, but I don't see how kids would learn about Bible stuff at some AWANA boys and girls club! I wonder where'd they get the name AWANA from, anyways? Jessie: AWANA, it's from the Bible. MaryLou: From the Bible? I read my Bible all the time and I never once saw anything about AWANA in my Bible. Jimmy: Would that be New Testament or Old Testament? MaryLou: Like what's that s'pposed to matter Jimmy? I happen to know that AWANA is not in my Bible, Old Testament OR New Testament, so there! Jessie: It's from the New Testament, MaryLou, 2 Timothy 2:15, I think. Let's see if I remember, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." Jimmy: Wow, you remembered that? MaryLou: Yeh, but, I mean, like, what does it mean? Betcha ya don't know what it means, Jessie, I betcha! Jimmy: Mean, what does WHAT mean? MaryLou: The verse about the approved workman not being ashamed, I mean, the one Jessie just said! Sheez! Some memory. Jimmy: Well, the thing is, I've got a memory for memorizing, but not for remembering. MaryLou: Let's see if we can get this straight. You say, you have a memory for memorizing, not for remembering, did I get that right? Jimmy: Yup, yup. that's about the size of it all right. Memory. Memorizing. Remembering. 5 believe you've pretty much got it covered! Jessie: Well, my Sunday School teacher told our class about that verse. A workman isn't supposed to be ashamed or embarrassed by the things he says and does, cause he can learn to understand what God said, cause he reads it in the Bible and gets it explained at AWANA. Jimmy: So at AWANA boys and girls get to learn about what God said in the Bible? Wow. that sounds cool! MaryLou: Well, I still don't exactly understand about what AWANA means. Jessie: Well, MaryLou, it's kind of like, work hard so God can say to you, "Well done." Be a good workman, one who does not need to be ashamed when God examines your work. Like, know what the Bible says and means. MaryLou: OK, I think I understand. Gee, you know, I think I'd like to come to AWANA and learn about what God said in the Bible! Jessie: This would be a nice time for you to start coming to AWANA, MaryLou, with Easter coming soon and all! Jimmy: Easter! I know about that! That's when the Easter bunny comes and leaves chocolate candy eggs and presents, and.... Jessie: Yes, well that too, but Easter is really about Jesus dying on the cross for my sins. Jimmy: Jesus died on the cross for your sins, Jessie? Wow! I knew Jesus died on the cross, but I didn't know Jesus died exactly for your sins! MaryLou: Jesus died on the cross for all of our sins. For Jessie and for me too. And also for your sins, Jimmy! That was the reason why Jesus came to earth, was to die for our sins so we could be with Him in heaven when we die! Jessie: That's right MaryLou! All we need to do is to invite Jesus into our hearts! Jimmy: Invite Jesus into our hearts! Wow, that'd be cool! How do you invite Jesus into your heart? MaryLou: Just like that, you ask Jesus to come into your heart, to take away all of the sin and hurts you have, and to stay with you forever. Jimmy: That's it? I mean, I don't have to do something to prove I am good enough to be with Jesus? Jessie: No Jimmy. That's why Jesus came to die on the cross at Easter, and to rise from the dead, and to go back to heaven, to be sure that all of us who are His children will have a home with Him in heaven for ever. Jimmy: Wow! That's cool! Just by inviting Jesus into my heart! I always thought that I could only go to heaven if I did everything right and stuff! And no matter how I try, I always seem to mess up somehow! And here all I have to do is invite Him into my heart! Wow! MaryLou: You know, I've been thinking about inviting too! AWANA Night Page - 5

6 Jessie: You, but you already became a Christian, you already invited Jesus into your heart! I don't understand what you mean! MaryLou: No I mean, I've been wondering about inviting my family and some of my friends to come to church at Easter. You see, they don't have Jesus in their hearts, and I think they need Him real bad. So I thought if I could just invite them to come to church at Easter, so they could hear about how Jesus came to die for their sins. I mean if Mom and Dad and my brother and my friend Leona, and, well, just all my friends.... Jimmy: Hey, that'd be great! I'd like to invite my family, and my friends too! Let's suppose if I were to make up a big invitation card and draw a big picture on the front. Jessie: What picture would you draw, Jimmy? Jimmy: I'd, I'd, draw a picture of love! A picture of the most love there ever was! Like I could draw a picture of a heart. No, needs to be more than that, I mean just a heart wouldn't show my family how much Jesus loves them. Jessie: Maybe you could draw a picture of Jesus on the cross, with His arms spread out, and you could say, (pause), this is how much Jesus loves you, and how much He wants to know you! MaryLou: Could I have some cards to give to my family and my friends too, Jimmy? I really, really want them to know Jesus Christ as their own Saviour, to know He came to earth just for each one of them! Jimmy: Wow, and maybe I could give some cards to these boys and girls in AWANA, so they could use them to invite their family and friends to come to church at Easter. Do you think I could? Do you think they would want my cards? I mean, I'm not really great at drawing pictures, but, maybe... Jessie: I'm sure some of the boys and girls would want to use your cards. And I know I want some of your cards. So why don't we go to my house and we'll start on your card. MaryLou: Hey, my Mom got me some new crayons.
