5 From the Pastor s Desk, Another eventful week at Lakeside for the East Ohio Annual Conference is finished. The weather was good. The accommodations were wonderful. My thanks to Pat Keirns for serving as our Lay Delegate. The theme of Annual Conference was Jesus is Calling Us Out. The theme verse was 2 Corinthians 5:17: So then, if anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived! (CEB) Keynote speakers for the week included Bishop John Hopkins, who announced his retirement effective August 31, retired Bishop Peter Weaver and West Ohio Bishop Greg Palmer. Together they stressed the need for local congregations to get out into the community, to make disciples of Jesus Christ and to transform the world. The keynote word was Transformation. At the Service of Commemoration and Holy Communion on Monday afternoon, we recognized 47 saints who joined the church triumphant since Annual Conference Basing his sermon on the theme verse, Bishop Hopkins spoke of his 1996 visit to Florence, Italy, to see the cleaned and restored statue of David by Michelangelo in time for its 500th birthday. He compared the church to the statue of David stating that the church also needs to be cleaned up from time to time. It can become neglected, unappreciated, and even go off course in fulfilling its purpose. He went on to say that the church is God s creation. In the sacrament of baptism, we die to self and are born anew in Christ. Baptism into the Christian faith, Hopkins said, also claims a person for the work of the church. As new persons in Christ Jesus, you are required to seek justice and mercy in the world. We are entrusted with the message of reconciliation. Bishop Hopkins challenged those in attendance: Are we willing to be transformed by God so that God can use us to transform the world? Bishop Weaver spoke at Tuesday morning devotions from the first chapter of Mark and invited us to look again on the baptism of Christ which we share. As Jesus came up from the water, he was then sent out into the wilderness. In the midst of our current wilderness of violence and hatred, we are called to be heralds of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives. Bishop Weaver brought forth the Most important question that can be asked : Do you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? We have been called into life as a new creation in Christ, a life transformed in love and grace. We are called to invite others up into that new life. Bishop Weaver then blessed us, sending us out to be Christ to the world. At Wednesday morning devotions we heard these words from Bishop Palmer: God in Christ spared nothing for our salvation. The only question, missionally, for the church is we are going to spend our time trying to preserve the church as we know it or are we going to expend ourselves telling and incarnating the mighty deeds of God? During the Service for Commissioning for Ministry and the Ordination of Elders and Deacons, Bishop Hopkins commissioned six clergy and ordained ten. On Thursday morning, we celebrated the ministry of Bishop John and Elaine Hopkins as we bid them goodbye. During the business of conference, there were only 2 resolutions to be voted on, and we endorsed one of our clergy to be on the ballot for one of 4 new Bishops to be elected at North Central Jurisdictional Conference, July in Peoria, IL. You can get these details and lots more about East Ohio Annual Conference as provided by Rick Wolcott, the Conference Director of Communications & Company at the conference website: Look for the Recap Report on the home page. Blessings, Pastor Jerry
