Tell the children that today s ible Story comes from the book of uke in the New Testament, chapter 2. nvite the children to read along silently as you tell the story. Distribute the children s Good Newspapers from Preclass. Tell them that for each picture, you will read a passage from the ible explaining what happened. Tell the children to turn to each picture as you place the different scenes on the flannel board. Presenting the ible Story Our ible Story begins in uke 2:1-3. n those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire oman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. Display picture #1 (Mary & Joseph Travel). xplain that the ruler or king of that day passed a law which required Mary and Joseph to travel to Joseph s home town for a census. A census is when the government counts all the people. Tell the children that Mary was very pregnant and she had to travel a long way without a car or a train. ut Mary did not complain! She trusted that God would take care of her. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to ethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (uke 2:4-7) Display picture #2 (aby Jesus in a Manger). xplain that Jesus was probably born in a stable, which is why Mary put him in a manger. A manger is a trough or open box where the cows and horses eat their hay. Ask the children if they could imagine putting a newborn baby in a dirty stable or a horse s food trough. Tell the children that Mary and Joseph did not complain about the fact that there was no room for them at the inn. They trusted God to take care of them. 4 S T O Y Jesus s orn And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the ord appeared to them, and the glory of the ord shone around them, and they were terrified. (uke 2:8-9) Display picture #3 (Angels Appear to the ). t was nighttime and the shepherds saw a bright light perhaps like lightning in the sky and it frightened them. n uke 2:1-15, we are told what happened: ut the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the ord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, et s go to ethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the ord has told us about. Display picture #4 ( Hurry off to Find the aby). The shepherds believed the angels and they wanted to see the baby. They knew that God had kept his promise the one he made hundreds of years before to the people through the prophet saiah! So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. (uke 2:16-18) Display picture #5 ( Spread the Good News). Tell the children that the shepherds were so excited that they just had to go and tell other people about the baby Jesus! ut Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. (uke 2:19-20) Show picture #6 ( Praise God). xplain to the children that the shepherds were so excited and amazed and happy to see the baby Jesus that they were praising God and thanking him! God had kept his promise just as he said he would. God always keeps his promises. emind the children that there are a lot of people who feel sad during the holidays because they do not have money to buy presents, and they do not have faith in God. She placed Jesus in a manger to sleep. Angels came and told the news of Jesus birth to the nearby shepherds and they hurried to see the baby Jesus. When they saw him, they were so excited that they went to spread the good news and praise God! They understood that God had sent them the greatest gift of all his Son who would teach them all about God and save them from their sins. The ible also tells us that one week after Jesus was born, his parents took him to the temple. While they were there, a man named Simeon came to see Jesus. Simeon loved God very much. God had told him that before he died, he would see God s Jesus s orn promised Son. When Simeon saw Jesus, he took him and held him and praised God. Simeon told Mary and Joseph that because of their son, there would be great joy and pain in their lives and in the lives of others. Another person who saw Jesus was a woman named Anna. She was eighty-four years old and she loved God very much. She never left the temple, but stayed and prayed all the time. When she saw Jesus, she thanked God and then went and told other people about him. ife Application Distribute the copies of eproducible Page D and the pencils.
