3 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 3 Big Sandy Chapter On September 14 th Dr. Larry Leslie, Gary Howard & Sam Hatcher attended the Grave-Marking Ceremony for Capt Christopher Taylor at Jonesborough, TN. Gary Howard and Sam Hatcher were in militia uniforms and a wreath was presented by Sam Hatcher in behalf of the Big Sandy Chapter. On September 15 th Dr. Larry Leslie attended the Gathering at Sycamore Shoals and presented a wreath in behalf of our chapter. Big Sandy Chapter Meeting In addition to the new member induction service, John David Preston was the speaker and his address was about the guarantees provided by the first amendment to the Constitution. John Sellers was at the chapter meeting. He is transferring to Big Sandy from out of state.

6 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 6 Arthur M Berdena King Eagle Scout Scholarship program Eagle Scout Essay Chairman Lucien Rice sent the following information to be included in the KYSSAR newsletter. SAR chapters are reminded of the following dates,each year, that pertain to the Eagle Scout Scholarship program for the State of Kentucky. October-November - nominations are due in the local council office. By December 15 council winners are selected. January 10th - council winners are forwarded to SAR chapters. January 25th winners are forwarded to the state chairman. February 10th - The state winner is selected on or about Feb 10th and sent to the national chairman by Feb 15th. Please note that the state winner must be in the hands of the national chairman by February 15. National winners are announced in March. The state winner will be invited to the state meeting in the spring, along with his parents. All winners will be contacted by the state chairman by letter. Local SAR chapters will be notified of the results of judging. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time during the year. Lucien H. Rice Eagle Scout Essay Chairman Phone: Captain Charles Gatliff The Capt. Charles Gatliff Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution met October 11 th at the Hutton School of Business located on the campus of the University of the Cumberlands. Following an opening ceremony and dinner, chapter members heard a presentation from Mike Smith, Chairman of the Mountain Laurel District of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Smith gave a through overview of the scouting program and the current status of scouting in the local district. Following his presentation questions were addressed. Barnett American Heritage Girls Chuck Scott and Scott Giltner attended a recent meeting of the American Heritage Girls. Pictured is Chuck helping teach one AHG member how to fold the American Flag. New members of the Society of the Cincinnati: Preston T. Higgins, Connie Roger Burbank and Lloyd Fowler. Chuck Scott presented three GIS members the new Lafayette medal for doing volunteer service at National Headquarters. Those receiving the medal are: Dr. Noble Roberts, Tom Higgins and Larry Selby. Rev. Forrest Chilton and Charlie Scott also earned the medal but were unavailable for the picture. Try it, you will like it! One day, while doing volunteer work at national headquarters, it was discovered that the fourth Great Grandfather of Charlie Scott s wife is buried on the property owned by NSSAR Registrar Aaron Adam s parents. Isaac Shelby Chapter (continued) Flags at Cave Hill Cemetery: Al Coleman (Lafayette Chapter) joined Scott Giltner, Charlie Scott, Chuck Scott and Forrest Chilton in the picture. This group plus Noble Roberts, Ed Myles, Joe Parish and Mark Johnston took part in the ceremony. Thousands of flags were placed on the military graves. Major General Joseph Warren Warren East Middle School Veterans Day Program: Charlie Scott, Tom Higgins, Forrest Chilton and Dennis Scott did a Veterans Day program before about 400 attentive students. One of the teachers, who is an Air Force Veteran, was rewarded with a standing ovation from the students and was given the opportunity to try on a replica of General George Washington s coat. The school was also presented with a framed picture of Major General Joseph Warren. See picture to the right. Sons of Liberty member. He dispatched Paul Revere on his midnight ride.

Members of the Simon Kenton Chapter attended the Big Bone State Park Salt Fest where between students attended on Friday. Isaac Shelby Chapter (John Clay Barnett, Noble Roberts, Ed Myles, Bob Bynum, Larry Selby and Chuck Scott) assisted CAAH Educational Director Colleen Wilson in SAR s presentation for school children at the Louisville water tower. Colleen Wilson helps a student try on a replica of George Washington s coat. Then she talks to the students about errors in the famous pictures of George Washington and his troops crossing the Delaware River. 12 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 12 C.A.R. & DAR Lara Rose, Elizabeth, Andrew Giltner (all members of the Jack Jouett C.A.R. Chapter) helped with a fund raising dinner for the Friends of Fort Massac on 6 October. Friends of Fort Massac is a group that supports the preservation Fort Massac and education about the site. Amongst its other roles in history, Fort Massac is where George Rogers Clark first landed in the Illinois territory to begin his march against Kaskaskia. Scott Giltner, member of the Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter, and his children (Elizabeth in the pink outfit, Lara Rose in the blue dress and Andrew in his new outfit) at Fort Massac where they posed by the George Rogers Clark memorial and statue before helping out with the fund raising dinner. Congratulations! The Kentucky Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution 3rd place in the nation in referring new members to the SAR. You helped the KYSSAR have a great year in 2011 Thank you SAR/DAR Liaison Charlie Scott with KSDAR Regent Jessieanne Wells Mitchell Clouse, KY State C.A.R. President with his Mother, Sharon Clouse. 13 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 13 DAR Chapter donates and dedicates bench in Veterans Cemetery The Colonel John Green Chapter NSDAR held a bench dedication ceremony at KY Veterans Cemetery West, in Hopkinsville, KY, on October 30, The chapter donated a $ bench, $ to replace a tree, and $90.00 to purchase 9 Christmas Wreaths to the cemetery. The bench with a plaque has been placed next to the SAR monument listing the 71 names of Revolutionary Veterans from the Christian County area. This project was funded by DAR members and from additional donations from SAR and private individuals. Lafayette Chapter Lafayette Chapter President-Elect Al Coleman has attended several KYSSAR and a few NSSAR activities in the last several months. Maybe that new uniform has something to do with it--or, maybe he is just enjoying taking part in the activities.

14 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 14 C.A.R. State Project Kentucky C.A.R. President Mitchell Clouse has chosen for his state project to collect money for the Center for Courageous Kids. The Center for Courageous Kids, also known as CCK, is a world class medical camp located in Scottsville, KY, serving children and families from across the country who are living with a variety of medical challenges. They are open year round and can host 120 kids at a time. Thanks to a generous donor, this camp is a 20 million dollar facility with a 168 acre campus. It has an onsite medical center with helipad, indoor aquatic complex, equestrian riding arena, bowling alley, gymnasium, climbing wall, boating and fishing, dining hall, theater, four camper lodges, and so much more! The Center for Courageous Kids is a 501-C non profit corporation that operates entirely from donations. They Prescribe Fun for these deserving children. Take a look at their web-site and watch the video. You will see what a worthwhile project Mitchell has chosen. Vision of the Center for Courageous Kids Mission of the Center for Courageous Kids A world class medical camping facility in the rolling hills of Scottsville, Kentucky providing a cost-free, safe, and fun camping experience for seriously ill and disabled children and their families. To uplift children who have life-threatening illnesses by creating experiences year-round that are memorable, exciting, fun, build self-esteem, are physically safe, and medically sound. The KSCAR has two sets of K.S.C.A.R, note cards available at $5 each to raise funds for the State Project. The Saratoga Collection includes 8 different cards and envelopes featuring pictures relating to the National Theme, Saratoga: The Turning Point. The C.A.R. Collection includes 8 different cards and envelopes featuring C.A.R.-themed pictures, such as endangered species and veterans. All note cards have information about C.A.R. and the State Project on the back. The KYSSAR has made a donation to the KYCAR for this project. You can help individually by purchasing a set of cards, described below at our next state meeting. 17 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 17 Knox Central High School, Revolutionary War Hall A few months ago an effort began at Knox Central High School in Knox County, Kentucky to reach back in time to return to the basics of American history. To dedicate a hall to the first American army. The hall would be named Revolution Hall. A dedication service was held on the 9th of November A tour through this hall will reveal a pictorial remembrance of America s birth and struggles thereof. The essential requirements, and demands that were carried out to obtain America s national sovereignty, made who we are--americans. May America never lose sight of the sacrifices of those who have gone before us to the attainment of Her sovereignty. On the justification of the Judeo-Christian ethos. Woodrow Wilson said the following: A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do. Don Root The author of the above remarks was Don Root, a member of the Captain Charles Gatliff SAR Chapter. Don, who originated the idea of Revolution Hall, spoke at the dedication ceremony. He is a direct descendant of one of George Washington s Life Guards. The Knox Central High School JROTC Color Guard presents Colors at the dedication service of Revolution Hall. At the top of the picture you will see George Washington s Commander s flag, a copy of the U.S. Constitution and pictures of General Henry Knox and George Washington. In the hall, one will find about 40 pictures and historical documents relating to the Revolutionary War and the founding of our country. Dr. Sam Powell represented the NSSAR by speaking to the new citizens. Over 200 people from 54 different countries became citizens. John Clay Barnett poses for a picture with new citizens. Robert Moseley Chapter, with the help of the Ohio Valley Chapter (Evansville) and the Fort Hartford Muzzle Loaders, presented a flag formation and a three shot, black-powder gun salute at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art s Buffalo Festival. During the ceremony, a new bronze buffalo was added to the museum park. The location of this park was an original buffalo trail. Starting from the left, the first five compatriots are from the Lt. Robert Moseley Chapter: Spencer Brewer, Gary Tunget, Robert Brooks, John Franklin Jones and Maurice Worthington,. Robert Moseley Chapter with a most informative talk about the flags of the American Revolution. Dressed in period attire, Spencer created a time line with the Flags in his vast collection to show how many years it took to form the United States. 23 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 23 C.A.R. at Locust Grove s Colonial Market Fair The Kentucky State Society Children of the American Revolution held their Fall Board Meeting at Locust Grove in Louisville on Oct. 27th in conjunction with the 18th Century Colonial Market Fair. The C.A.R. members enjoyed touring Historic Locust Grove where they shopped with colonial vendors, viewed juggling and tightrope acts, participated in colonial dance lessons, and watched a reenactment between British and Patriot soldiers (1) Members of the Illinois Regiment prepare for battle (2) Members of Butler s Rangers fire their cannon (3) Dennis Scott, member of the Gov. 24 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 8, Issue 6 Page 24 Renovation of Fulton Conway Building--905 West Main Street The renovation of the Fulton Conway Building began early this year with work to improve the looks of the front of the building. Old white paint was removed and new windows were installed on the second floor. Now, work begins to renovate the inside of the building & redo the exterior in the back of the building The roof between the back wall and an interior wall has been removed and the back wall is being removed. The picture on the right shows a rendering of what the new exterior should look like. Work in progress as of November 15, 2012 The roof has been removed and the back wall is coming down!
