1 Cincinnati Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Cincinnati PATRIOT Volume 32, Issue 10, Cincinnati SAR Mourns the Passage of Two Compatriots September was a very solemn month for the Cincinnati SAR. Compatriots Paul M. Wilke, Sr. and Irvin L. Chaney both completed their patriotic campaigns and joined our patriot ancestors. Paul M. Wilke, Sr. entered life eternal on September 9 th at the age of 78 years. Paul lived and breathed Sons of the American Revolution for the past 15 years. His list of offices and accomplishments is impressive, all highlighted by his being awarded the Minuteman Award and the Color Guardsman of the year in Paul was instrumental in mentoring many of us and was a great asset to the SAR. Chaney was presented the Bronze Roger Sherman medal for his service to the Cincinnati SAR. SAR President Jack Bredenfoerder was able to make the presentation to Erv at the Anderson Mercy Hospital before his passing. Erv was very happy to receive the award. Compatriot Chaney passed away on the morning of September 26th. He was just shy of his 68th birthday. Erv was very active in both the SAR and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He also served as Vice-President of the Clermont County Genealogical Society. He is survived by wife, Roselyn, four children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Please consider wearing a black ribbon with your SAR member medal or rosette to pay tribute. Paul served as Cincinnati SAR President in 2004, Ohio Society President in 2006, Central District VPG in Paul was an Ohio Society Hub Scott Laureate, a National Society SAR Minuteman and the National Society SAR Color Guardsman of the Year in Paul was a legend throughout the entire SAR and many sympathies have been expressed to our chapter from across SAR national organization. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Paul's wife Valerie, son Paul Jr., granddaughter Anna and the entire Wilke family. Compatriot Erv Chaney passed away in the early morning on September 26th. He was an active member of both the Cincinnati Chapter and a founding member of the Highlanders SAR Chapter. He was recently presented the SAR Bronze Roger Sherman Medal for his service and patriotism. Erv was also a member of the William H. Lytle Camp #10 SUV and the Vice President of the Clermont County Genealogical Society. Our prayers and sympathy go out to his wife Roselyn, children Clementine, Sheila, Paul and Chanel, and the entire Chaney family. Paul and Erv are now with our patriot ancestors. Cincinnati SAR Celebrates Constitution Day The Cincinnati SAR Chapter held its annual Constitution Day luncheon on Sunday, September 9th at the RSVP Event Center on Wards Corner Road.

The Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard presented the Colors under the command of Acting Commander Shaun Smith.

3 Cincinnati SAR Celebrates Constitution Day The Cincinnati SAR Chapter held its annual Constitution Day luncheon on Sunday, September 9th at the RSVP Event Center on Wards Corner Road. Fifty-eight compatriots, friends and family gathered to celebrate the principles that are set forth in our nation s Constitution. The Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard presented the Colors under the command of Acting Commander Shaun Smith. Many compatriots were recognized for their achievements and the Chapter celebrated the national awards that they received at the Houston NSSAR Congress in July: The President General s Activities Award, The Liberty Bell Americanism Award, and the President General s Cup. Compatriot Chris McDowell delivered the keynote address which was an in-depth look at the lives of the ordinary Revolutionary War soldiers. Chris specifically related their lives to the monetary structure they were forced to endure. That structure contributed to their lack of food clothing and basic property. He also shared the importance of the African American Revolutionary War soldiers who were an important part of the revolutionary cause. It was indeed a very thought provoking-presentation. Thanks Chris! The Cincinnati Chapter SAR inducted eight new compatriots at their Constitution Day luncheon on Sunday, September 9th. The new compatriots inducted by Ohio Society Trustee James D. The two Cincinnati area students represented the Ohio Society SAR at the National SAR Poster and Brochure contests that were recently held in Houston, Texas. Jackson received the National SAR 2nd Place Poster Contest Award and Madelyn received a National SAR Certificate of Achievement. Ohio Society SAR National Trustee James D. Schaffer presented Jackson and Madelyn with their awards. Both students are the children of Kevin and Amy Torrans and both students are home schooled by their mother Amy. Jackson s winning poster will be on display at the National SAR Headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky for the next year. Congratulations to Jackson, Madelyn and the entire Torrans family! 5 Cincinnati Compatriots Attend Ceremony at Saratoga Battlefield Cincinnati SAR Compatriot Shaun Smith and Cincinnati SAR President Jack Bredenfoerder where guest members of the Saratoga Battlefield SAR Color Guard for a memorial service at the Saratoga Battlefield on Sunday, September 16th. The ceremony was sponsored by the Saratoga Battle Chapter SAR, The Saratoga Chapter DAR, and the Saratoga area C.A.R. Compatriot Smith laid a wreath on behalf of the New Hampshire Society and President Bredenfoerder laid wreaths on behalf of the Cincinnati SAR and the Germany Society SAR. Compatriot Smith has several patriot ancestors who fought at the Battle of Saratoga. For this reason, he memorialized their service by becoming a dual member of the Saratoga Battle Chapter SAR. The Cincinnati Chapter thanks the Saratoga Battle Chapter SAR for their hospitality and a fine tribute to those who fought in this important Revolutionary War battle. Cincinnati SAR Welcomes Honor Flight Veterans Cincinnati Compatriots Mike Blum, George Stewart, Jerry Knight and Cincinnati SAR President Jack Bredenfoerder joined members of the Simon Kenton SAR and various Northern Kentucky DAR chapters to welcome the returning veterans from the Honor Flight of September 25th. Two final Honor Flights are scheduled for 2018: October 3 and October 23. Our compatriots are planning to welcome the veterans returning from these upcoming Honor Flights join us and welcome back our local heroes! 6 CCSAR Chapter History Chapter Historian, George Stewart Lochry's Defeat Reenactment August 1981 Commemorates its 200th Anniversary The idea of reenacting the Battle of Lochry's Creek emerged back in 1976, when the nation began celebrating its Bicentennial. Members of Col. Archibald Lochry Chapter, NSDAR, had always known about this, Dearborn County's Revolutionary War battle, and had erected a monument to honor participants over 50 years before near the actual battle site. While the battle was over in minutes, it took five years of planning and a $ grant from the State of Indiana to stage the event. Members of the Brigade of the American Revolution from several states, led by the Ninth Virginia Regiment and the Westmoreland County Pennsylvania militia; planned and choreographed the reenactment with help from several additional Revolutionary reenactment groups. (The Ninth Virginia was known for their painstakingly accurate portrayals of the Ohio Indians of the 1700's.) A special militia encampment was set up, depicting military life during the Revolution. Many members of the Cincinnati Chapter made the pilgrimage to witness this event. Although they did not participate, they were impressed with what they saw. Many members expressed interest about getting involved in future events like this. In August of 2007, both the Ohio Society and the Cincinnati Chapter took part in the 226th Commemoration of Lochry's Defeat at the Riverview Cemetery in Aurora, Indiana. Naturalization Ceremony Cincinnati Compatriots Welcome 99 New Citizens Cincinnati SAR Compatriots Ken Carpenter, Jerry Knight, Bob Bowers and Cincinnati OSDAR Carolyn Carpenter welcomed 99 new U.S. Citizens from 44 different countries at a naturalization ceremony held at the Miami University Hamilton Campus on Monday, Sept 17th. The Honorable Stephanie K. Bowman officiated. Also bringing greetings to the new citizens were Miami University President Gregory P. Crawford and Hamilton Mayor Patrick Moeller. Officers from the Butler County Sheriff s Office posted and retired the Colors.

7 Hamilton Garfield Middle School 2 nd Annual Patriot Fair At 9AM on September 7th, seven members of the Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard presented the National Colors to a combined assembly of Garfield Middle School history students commencing their Second Annual Patriot Fair. In attendance were Chapter PresidentJack Bredenfoerder, Chapter Vice-President Lee Wilkerson, Ed Boniwell, Dan Schmitz, Jeff Hartman, Joshua Hartman and Ken Carpenter. The American Spirit Education Alliance (ASEA) joined the Cincinnati Chapter SAR in the day s celebration, demonstrations and narratives of our national heritage. Throughout the day, students rotated through one of five stations positioned in the school s gymnasium. At each of the stations, students were introduced to a significant personality, event or symbol of American History. President James Madison and his lovely wife Dolly were portrayed in the first person reflecting on the period of Madison presidency during the War of At another station students had the opportunity to chat with a revolutionary war soldier who had served with General Washington during the Siege of Yorktown in Students were introduced to the story of our flag through the presentation of the Captain Howard Miller Flag Memorial Collection and quizzed on aspects of the various flags and banners that have flown over America during times of trial and peace. President Theodore Roosevelt introduced the students at the fourth station to the early 20th Century. Finally, at the last station students had the opportunity to handle various artifacts and replicas of early colonial life in America. The objectives of the SAR are declared to be patriotic, historical, and educational; to unite and promote fellowship among the descendants of those who sacrificed to achieve the independence of the American people, to inspire them and the communityat-large with a more profound reverence for the principles of the government founded by our forefathers; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom. There is no greater opportunity to achieve these objectivs than by our investment in the young people the students of our great nation and society. 8 Cincinnati SAR Commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the Death of Revolutionary War General Arthur St. Clair Contributed By: MICHAEL GUNN CCSAR General Arthur St. Clair was a Pennsylvania General during the American Revolution. He later served as President of the Continental Congress and as Governor of the Ohio Territory. We, in the Cincinnati Sons of the American Revolution, remember him for changing the name of our city from Losantiville to Cincinnati. Arthur St. Clair was born in Scotland and trained to be a doctor. In 1757, he became a soldier in the British army and came to America to fight in the French and Indian War. After being raised to a lieutenant and fighting in such historic battles as the Capture of Louisburg and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, St. Clair resigned, married a Boston heiress and settled in Pennsylvania. St. Clair built a series of mills and eventually became the largest landowner in western Pennsylvania. When the American Revolution began, St. Clair became a colonel of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Army. He fought in the campaign to take Quebec and is credited with developing the plan that led to the capture of Princeton, New Jersey in January, St. Clair was raised to Major General, but was court-martialed after retreating from Fort Ticonderoga during the Saratoga Campaign. He was exonerated, but never received another field command. Instead, George Washington, who still respected his opinion, made him one of his chief aides, a position he served in until the end of the war. After the Revolution, St. Clair served as a delegate to the Continental Congress for two years and in 1787 was elected that body s president. It was during St. Clair s tenure that Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance, creating the Northwest Territory in the area that now comprises Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. It was also during St. Clair s tenure that the new US Constitution was written in Philadelphia. St. Clair was appointed the governor of the Northwest Territory after its creation and moved to and named Cincinnati, Ohio. When the territory was divided, he became the governor of the Ohio Territory. He helped write the first set of laws for the territory and was heavily involved with blocking Indian claims to the land. St. Clair s actions were partly responsible for exacerbating the Northwest Indian War. In 1791, St. Clair became the senior general of the United States Army, but was defeated at the Battle of the Wabash in the greatest defeat ever suffered by the United States Army at the hands of Native Americans. President Washington required St. Clair to resign after the defeat at the Battle of the Wabash, but he remained as Governor of the Ohio Territory. However, in 1802, St. Clair was removed from the governorship by President Thomas Jefferson over political differences. St. Clair eventually moved back to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, where he died on August 31, 1818 at 81 years of age. He was broken and poverty-stricken due to a series of business reversals and the refusal of Congress to repay him the substantial amounts of money he had loaned the country to fight the Revolution and defend the Northwest Territory. St. Clair is buried in downtown Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
