Volume XXXII No. 11 May 2012 His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever He tells you. (Jn 2:5) GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Bill Rooney (h) (c) GrandKnight@kofc7612.org First, let me apologize for the late date of the publishing of this month s Communique. I wanted to take the opportunity to pass on news of the Maryland State Convention held in Ocean City 4-6 May. We took home the first place plaque for Car Raffle Ticket sales thanks to the persistence of DGK Dave Johnston and all of the Council members who bought or sold tickets last summer. Dan Hundertmark and his team earned second place for Christmas card sales with 185 boxes sold (Immaculate Lady Council in Glyndon sold 250 boxes for first place). The Fulton J. Communique took second place in the Council Bulletin competition thanks to our Editorin-Chief Mike Heyden. Jeanne O Sullivan led the Welcome Home Maryland team to win the award for Best New Activity for Ladies Auxiliary. Dave Johnston ran an outstanding hospitality suite, but we were just edged out in the competition by a room that I think had real pirates. The election for State Warden took place on Sunday morning and after two rounds of voting, Vince Grauso eked out a victory over Steve Ransdell for the position. Immediate Past State Deputy Dick Siejak made a plea to support the purchase of an Ultrasound machine for the Westminster Pregnancy Center and collected over $4500 from the Grand Knights and Delegates in attendance. Please consider making a donation through the Council for ultrasound purchase. Each dollar we donate will be matched by Supreme Council, doubling our efforts. As our year winds down to an end, I encourage you to not let your participation wind down. The Council s success is a direct reflection of the effort put in by you, our membership. Please take time to consider all of the different activities we run throughout the year, and try to pick out at least one that could benefit from the talent that God has bestowed upon you. There are opportunities big and small to pitch in. You can do something as big as volunteering to chair an event like a bull and oyster roast or a long term project like fifth Sunday breakfast or our annual Art Auction. Perhaps you could start off small by putting in an hour helping with highway cleanup or raffle ticket sales at a carnival. Maybe there s something that you have in mind that the Council could be doing, but isn t yet. Don t get caught up in the mentality of We don t do that anymore. or That s the way we ve always done it. Every day is a new day and a fresh opportunity to help our community. Your opinion counts. On May 16 th, 17 th, & our annual Degree triple header will be held. Consider attending one or more of these ceremonies to support our brothers and maybe rekindle the spark of the lessons taught in the ceremonials that may have Page 1 of 18

faded over the years since you last attended one. All of the ceremonials have changed in the last ten years, the third changed drastically last year. I hope to see you there. There are just a few social events left on the Council calendar for this fraternal year. Our May Mystery Night Social is on May 23 rd, hosted by Lecturer John Hundertmark and his social committee. The Council Annual Awards Banquet is on Sunday, June 3 rd hosted by the Past Grand Knights and honoring Council and Community members. Our Annual Family Camping Trip to Harpers Ferry is June If you don t camp, talk to Tom Greul about just coming out Saturday for the big communal chicken and ribs dinner. My final hurrah will be the Grand Knight s Picnic held at the council home on June 27 th. I would love to see all of you at every event, but, if you can only make one or two, that s alright too. Shoulder to Shoulder in Service Rallying for what We Believe My Brothers, We have been talking for some time now about the Same Sex Marriage Bill that Governor O'Malley signed into law recently. You've been asking "what can I do?" I now have your answer. On the weekend of April 29th, St. Joseph's Catholic Community will conduct a petition signing drive after all Masses. In order for the event to run smoothly and collect the maximum possible amount of signatures, I need the assistance of all of our members and their wives. Before you can collect signatures, you must attend a short training session to guarantee that every signature you collect will count towards the 55,000 we need to bring the law up for referendum in November. Once we start getting volunteers, we will set up the training sessions to be held at times to accommodate everyone. Please let Brother Al Grasley know what Mass you can help with and when you are available to attend a training session. AlGras@verizon.net Thank you in advance for your help on this important matter. Vivat Jesus DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Louis W. Stachowiak, DD # (h) lwstack@gmail.com Brother Knights and Families, With the passing of the greatest celebration in the Liturgical Year, Easter, let us retain the joy of the season as we enter the final two months of our fiscal year. Mothers Day is brightened with the Marygold program, and many of the councils have events honoring Fathers Day in June. The Maryland State Convention is nearly on hand! Many promising and entertaining activities are planned for every knight, and their wives and children during this weekend. The hospitality suites play a major role in honoring our state team, our past state deputies, district deputies and current Grand Knights. I hope to see you there! Every council in the District is eligible for the Columbian award this year! Be sure to submit the necessary paperwork before the June 30 th deadline. I commend all of the Grand Knights and councils on the significant amount of achievements made this year. Westminster Council 1393 has surpassed its membership quota, achieving 125%. As a District, we have achieved 85% of our goal! Some remarkable programs were initiated this year and many continuing programs were successfully improved. First, second, and third degrees are planned in the District during the month of May, offering an opportunity to review the lessons and teachings these degrees offers regarding our Catholic faith and our Loyal Order. Take the time to attend. It will be well spent! Become involved with the council activities and those of the order. There remain many opportunities to grow our council membership during these next two Page 2 of 18

months. Ask a Catholic gentleman to become a knight, and share the good word and actions of our council and of the order. Always carry a form 100. Vivat Jesus A Powerful Commercial This amazing video is going around the internet as something the Catholic Church plans to air prior to the election. Even if it doesn t air on TV, it is worth viewing. t6ixxam&hd C.U.F.P., INC. The following Brother Knights, all in good standing within the Council, are nominated to become (or be re-elected as) a member of the Home Corp Board of Directors for a 3 year term. All five nominees have accepted their nomination. Self-nominations will be accepted by Tom or I up to the June 13 Annual General Meeting. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor if the nominated Brother is present to accept or provides a written acknowledgement if he cannot be present at the meeting. Otto Greul Thomas Greul Dave Smith Collin Roden Harold Bernadzekowski 3. In conjunction with the change to the Home Corp By-Laws, the Annual General Meeting of the Home Corp, President Tom requests your permission to conduct the Home Corp Annual General Meeting immediately following the Council Business Meeting on Wednesday, June 13, Respectfully, Ray Miles, Home Corp Secretary LECTURER S REPORT S/K John Hundertmark (h) (c) Johnhundy@hotmail.com Thirty people attended our April fifty s sixties social. It was a true pot luck dinner with plenty of great food and dessert. After dinner we all played a table trivia game which was won by the George Moriatis table. Their age gave them a great advantage! We then had a hula hoop contest which was won by Cherie Hundertmark. Although she could hula hoop forever it seemed that she could have stopped after two spins and still would have won. The rest of us looked like nursing home residents. We then all laughed as we watched a 1950 s black and white I Love Lucy episode. We then all made a circle and held hands while we passed the hula hoop through our bodies to the next in line to music. When the music paused the one with the hoop was eliminated. Bill Wachter won the game due to his advantage of both dancing and his overpowering physical conditioning. During the evening about every ten minutes we had a whistle blower game. We would spin the wheel and the person with the correct number would win a valuable prize. It was a fun packed evening enjoyed by all. Page 3 of 18

Our next month s social is scheduled for Wednesday night, May 23 rd at 6:30 PM at the Council Home. The theme is Mystery night and we will be providing the food. We ask that you bring a dessert. An blast with details will follow soon. We need a headcount for this social to purchase the correct amount of food. Please provide your headcount to me using my contact info by May 21 st. Lastly reserve the date of June 27 th on your calendar for our Grand Knight s picnic. We need a huge turn out to support our Grand Knight Bill for all of the great work he has done this past year. More information will follow soon with details. MEMBERSHIP S/K John Hundertmark (H) (c) Johnhundy@hotmail.com There will be a membership triple header in our district this month. The first degree date is Wednesday May 16th a week after our regular business meeting. The second degree will be on Thursday May 17 th also at our Council. The third degree will be on Friday May 18 th at the Westminster Council. This is not only an opportunity to bring in a new member but also an opportunity for any first degree to make their second and third degrees during the same week. Let s all work together to have several candidates make their first degree as well as many members to take their second and third degrees during this triple header. If you have a candidate please contact me as soon as possible so we can interview him in time to have him installed during the triple header. Thanks to all of you who have sponsored new members this year. Please contact me if you need any information, forms or need to refer a candidate to be interviewed. I am hoping to have an exact amount to report at our business meeting in May as well as the. Westminster Pregnancy Center The Pregnancy Center in Westminster signed a lease April 17 and is planning to open mid-june. The center will be at 95 Carroll St Suite 101. There are some renovations that need to be done. They plan to hire 2 staff persons and have volunteers help as well. The proceeds from the baby bottle drives are going 157,351 Rosaries Do you know how impressive your pledges were that you made during the recent campaign to pray the Rosary for the unborn? The 157,351 rosaries that were pledged amount to 944,106 Our Fathers, an equal number of Glory Bes, and 8,339,603 Hail Marys. If the rosaries were said in sequence, assuming 20 minutes per recitation, it would amount to six years of continuous prayer. 40 Days for Life a Huge Success I received an this week with the results of the Spring 40 days for life event. A Huge Success: 100,000+ participants from 4,000+ churches Campaigns were held in 261 cities across the U.S., Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, Poland and Spain 8 abortion workers quit their jobs 883 babies were spared from abortion during this campaign, bringing the cumulative total of lives saved to almost 6,000 since 40 Days for Life began four and a half years ago (5,928 to be precise!) 3 more abortion facilities -- where 40 Days for Life campaigns were conducted -- that closed down for good in: Storm Lake, Iowa; Knoxville, Iowa; and Allentown, Pennsylvania. Stay Strong, God is on our side! COUNCIL BENEFITS ADVISOR Mike Hurley (c) michael.hurley@kofc.org Do you still have only group life insurance through your work? As a Knights of Columbus Field agent, I hear about group insurance every week. If you have it, it's certainly not a bad thing, but it can be a misleading security blanket. Most times, the amount offered is less than what you need, and the only way to determine what you really need is with a comprehensive needs analysis. Your group coverage is not based on any analysis. Instead they apply a formula: you Page 5 of 18

make "X" amount of salary and the group life insurance amount is either a flat amount or a multiple of your salary. Either way, it has nothing to do with the amount of children you have, the mortgage balance you carry, or the amount of money your wife would need if you die. It's a completely random number. It can also disappear at any time. All of us know people - friends, family, neighbors who have lost their jobs. When a job is lost, so is the group life insurance coverage. You do not own that policy, your employer does. If a company experiences difficulty and budgets need to be cut, group life insurance can be reduced or eliminated. And that decision could be made at the worst possible time for you. Most group life insurance coverage reduces or disappears when you retire. Many times it can be converted to an individual policy, but at a very expensive premium payment (remember you're no kid anymore when you retire and rates increase as you age). Just because you're 65 doesn't mean that you no longer need life insurance, or need less coverage. Actually the opposite is true. So, do you still carry only group life insurance? It must be supplemented with a personally owned portfolio of coverage. I can guide you in a plan that blends your group insurance with your KofC life insurance. Don't let the feeling of security that group life insurance through your job provides; distract you from the real issue. That is taking control of your family's financial future. me or call me. We can set up a time to review your coverage. We had so many activities, and our Council has met the challenges. Thanks to all Knights, Sheens, and of course our family members for our continued success. Now let s get our family something. For celebrating with a special someone or fixing a car, all you need is a computer to the internet. Go to a website and sign up for a select cause. Type in Knights of Columbus #7612, and be a registered shopper. What a nice way to spend some cash, and at the same time you are helping our Council too. There are over 1000 popular stores to choose. You can shop for flowers for Mother s Day or book a flight to a vacation spot! DGK REPORT Dave Johnston (h) (c) DGK@kofc7612.org The following is the list of nominees for the fraternal year. The list will be read once more before the election at this month's business meeting. Grand Knight - S/K David Johnston Camping Trip Tom Greul, PGK, PFN (h) (c) tomgreul@comcast.net We only have a few spots left for the Knights of Columbus camping trip. We will be camping on June at Harper Ferry KOA. We will have a big communal dinner were we will cook the ribs and chicken and everyone will bring the Page 6 of 18

sides and the paper products. If you want to go camping with us let me know as soon as you can so we can fit you in. Concession Stand Project Tony Gioio (h) (c) Time to start planning our concession stand fund raising for For our new fellow knights and to those who may have forgotten the details, one of our main fund raising activities for Council 7612 is running a concession stand for events occurring at Baltimore M&T Stadium. We run the stand at all of the home games of the Baltimore RAVENS as well as several other events throughout the year such as concerts, college sport tournaments and other special attractions. The stand requires 14 people to completely staff it. In previous years the knights have not been able to fully staff the stand without recruiting assistance from outside groups. The charity group working the concession stand is paid 9% - 12% of the gross sales of food and beverages sold at the stand. For an average Ravens game with a full team working the gross sales are approx. $14000 that amounts to $1260 of funds for the volunteer group. In recent years our council has never been able to claim these full amounts because either we were not able to fully staff the stand or we had to split the profits with the other group assisting us. With your help we can change that this year! We have a large council membership and even with a minimum commitment of working only one or two events a year we should easily be able to fully staff the concession stand. So if there is any way that you can possible help we really need your participation. But it s not just about the money, working the concession stands can be quite fun. Your fellow workers are all very enjoyable individuals and you get to meet all kinds of interesting fans. Everyone in the stadium gets caught up in the excitement of the game and you are usually surprised at how fast the time passes. If you would like to take part, now is the time to take action now. The first 2012 event is only a few weeks away (June 2nd MONSTER TRUCK RALLY). Since the concession stand sells beer workers must receive TEAM training offered by AMARCK, the company that run the concessions at M&T. There are only two training sessions scheduled before the June 2nd Monster Truck Rally Tuesday, May 8th, 6pm 9pm, M&T Bank Stadium, Media Lounge Thursday, May 24th, 6pm 9pm, M&T Bank Stadium, Media Lounge Wednesday, June 6th, 6pm 9pm, M&T Bank Stadium, Media Lounge Monday, June 25th, 6pm 9pm, M&T Bank Stadium, Media Lounge If you would like to attend any of these training sessions please contact me and I will make the arrangements. A flyer containing the schedule of all of this year s events is attached. Please let me know if you would like to take part. Additional TEAM training sessions will occur throughout the year and when they are announced I will let you know. Feel free to contact me if you would like any addition information or with questions. Looking forward to working with all of you! For The Good of the Order Terrance Morse, who was not present at the meeting, was selected for the Good of the Order Drawing that would have awarded $ Since he was not present, the drawing for May will be worth $ and the member must be present to win Page 7 of 18

The Order won two bronze awards, one in the Regional TV & Multi-Market Cable category under the "Miscellaneous" grouping and the second for "Use of Graphics" in the same category. Released by the Knights Feb. 17, the minutelong commercial highlights quotes from U.S. Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy and Reagan each focused on the foundational role that God and religion play in American rights and government. The spot ran on national cable networks Feb , as well as in regional markets from Connecticut to California. The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 and is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs; the finest video and film productions; and online commercials, video and films. Winners represent the best work of respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators and corporate video departments from around the world. Watch the commercial at id= STATE REPORT Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop William E. Lori, chairman of the U.S. bishops' committee on religious freedom, as the 16th Archbishop of Baltimore on March 20th. The very thought of serving and leading the nation's 'Premier See' fills me with joy and also Page 8 of 18

with profound gratitude, first and foremost to the Lord who shepherds his people in love, said Bishop Lori, referring to the long-standing national primacy of the first Catholic diocese established in the U.S. Archbishop-designate Lori's installation will take place May 6th at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. In an announcement from the Baltimore archdiocese, the new archbishop-designate thanked the Pope for entrusting him with leadership of the great and historic local Church. As the Vatican announced Archbishopdesignate Lori's appointment, it also revealed the Pope's choice of new bishops for Rockford, Ill. and Pensacola-Tallahassee in Florida, as well as a new Archbishop of Montreal, Canada. In Montreal, Cardinal Archbishop Jean- Claude Turcotte will be succeeded by his auxiliary Bishop Christian Lepine. Rockford's bishop-designate is Milwaukee-based pastor Monsignor David Malloy, while the Pensacola- Tallahassee diocese will be headed by Father Gregory Parkes from the Orlando diocese. Meanwhile, Bishop Lori's new appointment to Baltimore comes almost exactly 11 years after he was installed on March 19, 2001 in his most recent post as the Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut. In the announcement of his new appointment, Bishop Lori thanked Baltimore's two past archbishops, Cardinal Edwin F. O'Brien and Cardinal William H. Keeler, and their predecessors stretching back to Archbishop John Carroll. He declared that he was looking forward to meeting and working with all whose witness to Christ and whose spirit of loving service enable this historic archdiocese to pro-claim the Gospel afresh in our times and bring its truths and values into the public square. Cardinal O'Brien, who led the Baltimore archdiocese from 2007 until his 2011 appointment to an international position, welcomed Archbishop-designate Lori and thanked Pope Benedict for the appointment. I have known Bishop Lori for many years and have been impressed by his deep love of the Church and her people, and by his extraordinary work both as Bishop of Bridge-port and as a valued leader on behalf of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said Cardinal O'Brien. He noted that the outgoing Bishop of Bridgeport had solidified the foundation of that local Church in many key areas, most especially Catholic education, evangelization, and priestly vocations, while also serving the U.S. Church more broadly in areas such as marriage and the protection of children.
