Volume XXXV No. 12 June 2015 Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June. Al Bernstein CHAPLAIN S REPORT Father David McGuigan Brother Knights, May is mother s month in wonderful ways, both in the lives of families and in the family of the Church. Recently, we celebrated Mother s Day and the Knights graciously distributed flowers to the moms, nanas and great-grandmoms as they exited Mass. Looking up the history of Mother s Day reveals some interesting facts: the practice goes back to ancient Greece and Rome and became an early Christian practice, in honor of the Blessed Mother, fittingly, on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In the U.S., the inspiration that gave rise to our national holiday came from an Appalachian woman named Anna Jarvis, who recognized the struggles of women and families in poverty in her own community. After her death, her daughter, also Anna, continued the effort which led to Woodrow Wilson s proclamation, on May 8, 1914, that the second Sunday of each May would be Mother s Day. A mother s love is a unique and wonderful thing; there s no human relationship quite like the bond between mothers and their children and this is to take nothing away from the indispensible role of fathers, far from it. In fact, a memorable quote on this subject, with various attributions as to source, goes like this: The greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother. In my homily this past Sunday, in which we heard in the New Testament reading the succinct sentence that Page 1 of 13 Inside this issue: Chaplain s Report... 1 Grand Knight s Report... 2 Supreme Council Report... 3 State Council Report... 4 District Deputy s Report... 4 Council Benefits Advisor... 4 Activity Reports... 6 Family... 7 Chancellor s Report... 9 expresses the nature of God, God is love, I referenced another Scriptural image to give flesh and bones to that pithy theological statement, Isaiah 49:15: Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you! Encouraging hope among people who felt abandoned by God, Isaiah called upon the powerful image of mother and child to expand into God s fidelity in love. May is, also, a wonderful time to recall that when we joined the Knights of Columbus, we received the gift of a rosary that we were exhorted to keep with us at all times. Probably, it was not the first rosary we received maybe, it was but it reminds us that the Church, the body of Christ, is ever-protected and loved by the mother of Our Lord, our mother in faith. The

rosary goes back quite a way, too: tradition associates its origin with St. Dominic. In practice, the rosary helped lay Catholics to charge the very atmosphere with prayer in imitation of the Church s monastic religious, who cyclically prayed the 150 psalms of the Bible, their daily bread and sacrificial offering. That Jesus Christ shares his mother with us the Gospel of John proclaims in the account of Mary s presence at the foot of the cross: When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, Woman, here is your son. Then he said to the disciple, Here is you mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home, John 19: The last earthly service of our Savior provided a home and future for his mother, but he was, also, providing for his disciple and, indeed, for the Church born of the Holy Spirit. The relationship, like all genuine relationships, is one of mutual love. Mary loves us with the love she bore her son, Jesus, and intercedes for us. At the same time, the Church honors her with the love that Jesus bore her, which is nothing other than His love for the world, expressed in that unique human bond. So, work those beads, brother Knights, with gratitude and love, and talk your mother, today! God bless. GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT David Love Grand Knight s Corner June 2015 Wow what a year, where can I begin? The summer started off with the Carnival and the installation of your officers. What a great group of gentlemen that have come together and helped keep this council going strong. Then, with the prayers of the council, I survived and am still on the mend. I know I have had some rough months this year and unfortunately it has reflected in the activity level here in the council. Some of our Brothers have moved from our Council to other councils and we will miss them and all of the great work they have given to this Page 2 of 13 Council over the years. We have also added several new members and the new energy and ideas are welcome. Like every year, people have life events and have been able to give more time to our council or now, with a new job, some have less time but they give when they can. Our Council is all about giving what you can when you can. Passing the hat, whether it be money for tickets, food for a social, sweat equity of serving food or drink or cooking food at a social or at a Pit Beef or M&T Stadium events. Not to mention the time we are side by side enjoying each other company at blood drives, coffee and Donuts or being an usher or the variety of the ministries at our Parrish or around the community. Helping each other any way we can in a time of need, the many people who have brought a smile, a shoulder to lean on, a hug. Maybe it was the giving people who brought food or drink to a family in need after a health issue, thank you for being a great Council. Our Council remains one of the most active councils in the state. With with your help and actions we will remain on top and continue to grow with the many family, community and church activities we continue to celebrate together. Let us continue to celebrate and grow closer to one another and with our Parrish and our Lord. As this year comes to a close, so will our time at the Council Home on Stang Road. For over a Decade we have called this building our Home. Many memories were created at the Home but it is time to move back to Eldersburg and with the guidance and forward thinking of Father Neville we have been welcomed Home for many years to come. With the move, we hopefully will welcome back many of the brothers to the council, the meeting and activities of the Council Family. In May we had Mother Day and celebrated with giving the ladies of the Parrish a gift to show our love and appreciation for them. Lead by Brother Jarvis, we gave out about 900 Marigolds after the masses that weekend. Thank

you to all the brothers and their families for preparing them and passing all of them out. Brother David led his membership team to work with the member to bring in several new members and Brother Peter and his degree team for bringing them into the council, at the May Meeting. On May 31, Archbishop Lori came to St Joseph s to celebrate the 10:00 Mass then to dedicate the New Foundation and Fellowship Hall. Knights and their family we well represented and proudly wearing their badges. I was honored to serve as one of the 4 th degree Knights to serve at the Mass and the dedication. I want to Thank Greg Lofton, DGK, Tony Gioio, Warden, Peter O Sullivan PGK, PFN and Bill Adams, Westminster s GK, who as the Color Corp Commander, leading the way. As June has arrived, we will again have another busy month. June 10 will be the Business Meeting where we will elect your new Council officers. June 13 th we will gather will Father Paul at 5pm for his final Mass before he retires. We will then celebrate his dedication to our Parish. June 14 th is our Annual Awards Banquet at 5pm at Salerno s. (Only $ per person to join us to celebrate the year s activities and accomplishments.) Of course we have the final event of the year at the Council Home, the Final Social and the Grand Knight Picnic on June 24 th, which also happens to be the Anniversary of our Council. So Come out and Celebrate, Socialize and Honor some special honorees. Page 3 of 13 July, we will start off with a bang, well at least fireworks at the Carroll County Farm Museum (send me an , jdavidlove@verizon.net or call me or look for the so you can come out and help and join the Fellowship as we work in the Community and we raise some money for all the great Charities we donate thru the years). If memory serves me, we gave away about $ 50,000 this year thanks to all the hard work this council has done. A job well done. Thank you I have had a lot of support and guidance from the past Grand Knights, Harold, David, Greg, Tom, Rich, Larry, Weido, Thom and Peter. Thank you. As my year comes to a close there are plenty of thanks that needs to go out, to all of you who have supported the council throughout the year, thank you. To the Directors who have lead others and help make this council so great, thank you. To the money men, the recorders, editor and my fellow Officers, thank you for your countless hours that have help guide this council, Thank you. And to Father Dave, thank you. And our Lord above, who has both challenged and guided me all year. Mary Queen of the Knights, Pray for us. One last Thank you, I would like to give a special shout out and thanks to my wife Carol and my family for helping me and allowing me to be gone so much the past few years. Vivat Jesus, David SUPREME COUNCIL REPORT Please check out the webpage for a variety of informative and enlightening articles and news about recent events for the KofC around the world.

STATE COUNCIL REPORT Please check out the State webpage ( for information on upcoming State events and programs. DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT John Trainor, District Deputy No Report COUNCIL BENEFITS ADVISOR Mike Hurley Still have just group life insurance through work? As a Knights of Columbus field agent, I hear about group life insurance every week. If you have it, it s certainly not a bad thing, but it can be a misleading security blanket. Most times, the amount offered is far from what you need, and the only way to determine what you really need is with a comprehensive needs analysis. Your group coverage is not based on any analysis. Instead, they apply a formula: you make X amount in salary and the group life is either a flat amount or a multiple of your salary. Either way, it has nothing to do with the number of children you have, the mortgage balance you carry, or the amount of money your wife would need if you die. It s a completely random number. It can also disappear at any time. All of us know people friends, family, and neighbors who have lost their jobs. When the job is lost, so is the group life insurance coverage. If the company experiences difficulty and budgets need to be cut, group life can be reduced or eliminated. And that decision could be made at the worst possible time for you. Most group life insurance coverage reduces or disappears when you retire. Many times it can be converted, but at a very expensive premium (remember, you re no kid anymore when you retire, and premiums do rise as you get older). Just because you turn 65, doesn t mean you no longer need life insurance or need less coverage. Actually, the opposite is true. Do you still carry just group life insurance? It must be supplemented with a personally owned portfolio of coverage. I can help you blend your group benefit with your K of C life insurance so you can be in control. Don t let the feeling of security that group life provides distract you from the real issue taking control of your family s financial future! COUNCIL NEWS Brother Knights, The following candidates are placed into nomination as Council Officers for Columbian Year There are still openings for the position of Advocate and for Inside/ Outside Guard. Gregory Lofton Michael Murphy David Love Harold Appointed Officers Chaplain Lecturer Financial Secretary (by Supreme Council) TREASURER S REPORT Chris Ryder My Brothers All, As you know, the Council, through our Home Corporation, is selling our real property in Baltimore County. When you visit the Home for the last time, preferably at the Grand Knight s Picnic, take one final look at the plaque by the front door. The plaque commemorates the transfer of the property from the Cadiz Caravan of the Order of Alhambra (another Catholic men s fraternity) to the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Council of the Knights of Columbus. The price of the sale was the loan balance of a John Deere lawn tractor the one that we still use to mow eight acres worth of grass. I heard that story during my very first visit to Saint Joseph Catholic Community before Gail and I moved to Carroll County in Our first visit to St. Joe s was after we drove up from Northern Virginia to check out how construction was going on our new home, and I met Father Paul Reich. I asked him if St. Joseph had a Knights of Columbus Council, and he told me about the Council and the story behind the purchase of the property from the Alhambra. When I voiced astonishment over a purchase of eight acres for almost nothing, Father Paul replied, God takes care of His Knights. The sale of the Council Home begins a new chapter in the life of Fulton J. Sheen Council. We will now assemble at St. Joe s with all of the opportunities associated with our ability to focus our efforts within the Parish community and not having to worry about the building s next casualty and how much that would cost. Of course there will be challenges for us as well. One of those challenges is how to be a good steward for the resources we are about to gain from the property sale. Our Supreme Council placed restrictions on what a Council can do with proceeds from the sale of real property; profits from the sale must be used for charitable purposes. We can certainly continue to fund our scholarship program as well as help out with the many requests that the Council addresses throughout. In addition to our Charity programs, the Council will still have expenses that are not charitable in nature, and we will still need to generate revenue to pay our bills. To address our long-term finances, including the management of our cash assets, I was asked to form a Ways and Means Committee to study our revenue requirements along with how best to meet our Order s primary commitment to Charity. Designated committee members are the Grand Knight, the Financial Secretary and the Treasurer. We are looking for a few more dedicated Council members to participate no elections required. If any of you newer members want to know about the financial Page 5 of 13

business of our Order and Council, this is a great opportunity. Interested Brothers should call me at or at chris.ryder@verizon.net. As our retiring Brother, Father Paul, told me 14 years ago, God takes care of His Knights. In return, it is our job to help out those who turn to God s Knights for assistance. I solicit your help to figure out how the Council can best to do that. GOOD OF THE ORDER During the May Council Business Meeting, Brother Don Blais's name was drawn to win the Good of the Order prize of approximately $75. Unfortunately, Brother Don was not present at the meeting and did not win the prize. The Good of the Order prize for the June Business Meeting will be approximately $100 and the winner must be present at the Business Meeting to win the prize. The June Business Meeting will be on June 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Council Home on Stang Road. Join us!! 9 made plans for the fall fundraisers of a Flower Sale and a Community Flea Market as well as the M&T concession stands. We brainstormed how to recruit new members and reengage inactive members. This meeting was also special because of the elections of those below. Other nominated ladies declined to serve. The following will serve and be installed in July: Brenda Ransdell - President Barbara Coyle -Treasurer Joanne Turgeon - Vice President Heather Greul Secretary Please thank and congratulate these ladies when you see them. These are busy people who still stepped up to serve our auxiliary. Additionally, the Awards Banquet on June 14 would normally honor a Sheens Lady of the Year. It was decided that recognizing our lady at the Seniors Prom was a better idea. However, please try to attend this wonderful awards banquet at which we recognize members of the Council for extraordinary volunteerism and service to the Council and community. We also recognize law enforcement officers and other members of the community for their service and dedication. Come out and show our police we appreciate them! Who can forget those Baltimore City police in riot gear? June is also the start of our working the area carnivals to sell tickets. Lastly, our new team of officers will work through the summer to plan for a successful and fun 2015/2016 term. You are invited to any planning meetings, the first being 7/15/15 at Panera s at 7 PM.
