Page 2 Council Corner John 3:28, 30 I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him... He must increase, but I must decrease. The above verse was selected last month for the Pastor s Corner section of the newsletter by our now former Pastor, Chris Johnson. It was timely then as he reflected on his time here at Christ the King, and it is still timely as we look to the future of our congregation. In looking back on what he wrote last month, the following statement bears repeating: One of the things we must always remember is ministry is only secondarily about me or you. Ministry is about Jesus. In the interest of keeping all of you not only informed, but involved in the ministries of our church, the Executive Committee has assigned this column to me as another part of my contextual learning for my Christian Public Leader (CPL) course at Luther Seminary. So, while I too will miss reading the Pastor s Corner, we have re-named it Council Corner and will use this space to keep all of you updated on things happening and some of the important decisions facing our congregation as we begin the search for a new Pastor, and work together to keep all of our other ministries flourishing. In the first few weeks of our time of searching as I like to call it, I ve needed to take a hard look at some of our communication processes in order to take on the projects I ve been assigned, as well as my role as Council Vice- President. How, when, and to whom we communicate our ideas, questions, needs, wants, fears, hopes, and all the rest of the day to day concerns of a healthy congregation are important to keeping things on track. Most issues have in large part gone to and through the Pastor, the church office, and at times, the Council, and many of you have approached members of the Council with questions and ideas. We want to encourage you to help us keep the lines of communication open by continuing to bring any questions or concerns to the Council so that they can be addressed. This is especially important for any decisions that need to be made, as Council is your appointed representation to handle the business of our Church. The Church Council also relies upon the various committees of the church to take care of specific areas of ministry. Each Council member sits on at least one committee to insure this continuity, and committee reports are part of each church council meeting agenda. The rest of the committee membership is made up of members of the congregation. Each of these committees is in need of more members to help keep our ministries active. We need you! Please take a look at the listing of Church Council members and of the committees on which they serve, and prayerfully consider where God is calling you to serve. If you have any questions about the various committees, please contact the Council member listed for more information about what the committee does, when they meet, and how you can become involved. 3 Page 3 Nancy Norberg, Worship & Music John Hendrickson, Stewardship Sharon Pascoe, Parish Life Corey Kang, Parish Life Rachel Pascoe, Parish Life Lance Lindstrom, Worship & Music Ken Robitaille, Property By now each of our members should have received a letter about the call process for a new Pastor, along with a survey to complete. We are asking everyone to complete the survey and return it to the church no later than Sunday, October 7 th. You may mail or drop off the survey in the church office, or place it in the offering plate during worship any time through Sunday, October 7 th. If you did not receive the survey, you may pick up a copy in the church office. The Call Committee will be selected from the pool of those who express willingness to serve in this capacity on the survey form. Even if you are not interested in serving on the call committee, your input on the other questions is still very important to the future direction of our pastoral ministry. Again, please make sure to return your survey no later than Sunday, October 7 th. I would also like to remind everyone that the Northern Great Lakes Synod has appointed Rev. Tom Otis from First Lutheran in Gladstone to serve as our Interim Pastor. He is available for Pastoral Care concerns. If that should be needed, please contact Arlene in the office and she will put you in touch with Pastor Otis. As difficult as it might be to let go, we do need to respect the fact that Pastor Chris Johnson now serves a different congregation. Many of you are likely still in touch with him via Facebook, YouTube, or other updates he might send out, but we must be mindful of the fact that he will no longer be providing Pastoral Care for our congregation. Pastor Otis will be keeping in touch with our church office for any needs of the congregation; he has begun attending Council meetings and will be working on keeping our Pulpit Supply scheduled for the weeks and months ahead. He has already established a good working relationship with our Church Council, and will help keep us connected to our Synod and offer guidance as we enter the call process. Speaking of our Synod, the Delta Conference Festival is coming up on Thursday, October 11 th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba. The meeting time is 5:30 8:00 P.M. Bishop Katherine Finegan will be leading the event, and there is no cost to attend. We would like to have good representation from Christ the King, so please consider joining us for this important event. It will help us stay connected to our Synod and our church neighbors. Please register in advance on the sign-up sheet on the office window.

Page 4 Finally, thank you! Thanks to each and every one of you for stepping up to take on new challenges, even if it means stepping outside your comfort zone! And thank you for your patience and understanding, and for giving me the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone as I take on new projects. Times of transition can be difficult for any congregation. Let us remember that this is Christ s Church, and we are here to serve as His humble servants and witnesses to His Grace. We will be stretched in this time of transition, but that will make us stronger if we cooperate with that process and remain in peace with one another. With that in mind, I would like to share a couple of verses from a recent reading; Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. - But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. James 3:13, Yours in Christ & On Behalf of Your Council, Lisa Temple, Council Vice-President & Luther Seminary L.I.M. Student Singers & Musicians Wanted! Choir rehearsals will be starting on Monday, October 15 th at 6:00 PM in the Sanctuary, and will continue every Monday through Christmas. All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate, and you don t need to read music. If you like to sing, please join us! We will be rehearsing pieces to sing during the Advent & Christmas season. We are also looking for those who play an instrument of any kind who are willing to provide special music and/or accompany the choir. Music adds to our worship experience and we would like to offer it as often as we can. Maybe God is calling YOU to share the gift of music! If you have any questions, or would like to provide special music, please talk with Beth Belcher or Lisa Temple. Let s make a joyful noise to the Lord!

Each time you shop in their store and present this card you rack up points. When reaching a certain level you earn a $ amount which you can receive credit for off your receipt. Under their Community Care Program you can transfer your points to a certain organization which Christ the King is a member of. Recently Christ the King was awarded a $100 gift card which can be used for purchasing anything from their store. We have used these dollars in the past to help fund the meals that we serve to the Bay College students. These new dollars will be used exactly for that purpose again. THANK YOU to all who have participated in this program. You may not feel like the points you transfer are much but together with everyone else s they do make a difference. If you would like to learn more about what this is about then contact the church office. Keep transferring your points because they really do make a difference to us.

Page 7 Faith Formation by Carrie Boudreau Our Faith Formation started out strong with Rally Day on September 9th. Everyone enjoyed a tail gate lunch and an obstacle course and fun games. We had 35 children registered for Sunday School! Thanks be to God! We are continuing our tradition of meeting in the fellowship hall for offering and prayer request- pray for me as I attempt to step into Pastor Chris' role : ) We are then splitting into three groups - the PK-3rd, the 4th- 6th and the confirmation groups. Thank you to everyone who has stepped up to help out this year - Roland J, Beth J, Patty L, Corey & Elena K, Susie C, Amy S, Kim H, and Kim B. A warm welcome to Heather Albanez who will be helping out with the 4th-6th graders- it's always great to see new faces! I pray for continued blessings upon our youth and their families as we continue throughout the year. Blessing of the Quilts With the onset of fall it reminds us that it s time to get our quilts ready for shipment to Lutheran World Relief. Our Wednesday quilters have worked diligently to put together these quilts and by the time they send them off they should be close to having 300 made. On Saturday and Sunday, October 6 th and 7 th we will share a blessing for these quilts and for the hands that created them. The ladies are always in need of large pieces of material that make good backings. If you have sheets, blankets, material, etc. and would like to support their efforts then please drop it off at the church. Just as important are the hands to put them together. Come some Wednesday morning between 9:00-12:00 noon and check out their operation. Bay Campus Ministries Each Monday local churches serve a meal to the students and staff at Bay College. Christ the King has participated in this on many occasions and have a date coming up. Our turn to serve is Monday, November 5 th. We have the meal figured out and planned for but what we need is someone to transport it and serve it. Is this something you or your family can plan to do? Let the church office or a member of the Parish Life Committee know. Church Office Hours We want to remind our members that our church office hours are Monday Thursday, 8:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. If it s important to speak to someone outside of those times you may call our Council President, Mary Jo Johnson at or Office Administrator, Arlene Cody at You may also leave a message on the answering machine. If you need pastoral care either Mary Jo or Arlene can relay that on to Pastor Tom Otis our Interim Pastor.

Page 8 Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child The Parish Life Committee will be participating in the Shoebox ministry led by Samaritan s Purse. The way in which it will be done is a little different from the recent years. Very shortly empty shoeboxes will be available on a table in the narthex. Grab one, fill it with appropriate supplies and return to the same table. We ll deliver them to Grace Church, Gladstone in November. Some of the popular items that most everyone include in these boxes are school supplies (crayons, scissors, erasers, pencils, etc.), stuffed animals, soap, washcloths, etc. We have a number of individuals who would prefer not to do a whole box but would rather buys things along the way. We welcome their contributions and will use them to create a box or fill in where needed. Suicide Prevention Delta County Communities That Care will be presenting the movie The Ripple Effect at Bay College in the Besse Center Theater on Wednesday, October 17 th at 6:00 p.m. This excellent movie deals with the difficult topic of suicide prevention. A panel of individuals including a pastor will be available afterwards to answer any questions the audience might have. The film The Ripple Effect will give guidance to young people who are wishing to say something about a friend they are concerned about. This panel is also to help them know who they can go to if they have any concerns. Tickets are $5 or families of 5 or more they are $20. Bible Study: The Gospel of John Our Wednesday Bible Study Group continues to meet at 9:30 a.m. and is being capably led by Richard (Dick) Johnson. They will continue studying the Gospel of John. Here is a look at the weeks to come. October 3 rd John 15:1-27 Vine, Branches, and an Abiding Faith October 10 th John 16:1-33 The Conqueror of the World?
