Died 11/5/1888 Irving Berlin led an incredible life, one that lasted over a hundred years and took him from a poor Russian shtetl to seeing his name in lights on Broadway and movie palaces throughout America. His songs earned him many millions of dollars and became standards: Always, Cheek to Cheek, Blue Skies, Easter Parade, Alexander s Ragtime Band, and, of course, his tribute to the country he loved: God Bless America. W hat a wonderful occasion it was, at our last meeting, to induct 3 new members into our Lions Club Of New Brighton family. A very special welcome to Jenny, Cheryl and Alaster and we trust you will all have a long and enjoyable time being a member of this great Service Organisation. At our meeting on Wednesday May 4 th we will welcome another new member, Rajitha Vithana ( known as RJ ). RJ will be inducted into our Club by Zone Chair Hugh Curry. MAY THE FORTH BE WITH YOU A big congratulations to President-Elect Don and all Officers for making themselves available to administer the affairs of the Lions Club Of New Brighton for our Lions year Well done to you all, we all have an exciting time ahead to look forward to. A new Lions Club is being born on May 28. Lions Pegasus Town charter function is to be held at the Kaiapoi Club. At present PDG Lion Dick and myself have registered. It would be great to have a good representation from New Brighton so let myself or Dick know on Wednesday night if you will be attending. At Wednesday s meeting we will need to confirm numbers attending Lions Club of Christchurch Pegasus meeting visit May 12. Guest Speaker will be Glenda Clarke, finalist in the last Masterchef contest telling us about Masterchef behind the scenes. Sounds interesting. 3 From 1st VP Andrew McDonald Guess Who s Coming to Dinner night was a great success by all accounts. Next time around, we hope to get more couples joining in. Our next meeting on 4 th May is a partners night, we will be welcoming our new members and will have a short Trivia Quiz so bring your thinking caps and partners! We have confirmed our Club Visit to Lions Club of Christchurch Pegasus in Hargood Street, Woolston on Thursday May 12 th and need to confirm numbers as soon as possible. This is an opportunity to meet fellow LIONS, and share experiences and enjoy good fellowship. Please mark this date in your calendars and confirm attendance at our next meeting. Our club has been invited to attend the Pegasus Town LIONS Club Charter night on Saturday 28 th May. It s heartening to see a new LIONS club established so please let Andrew know if you can attend the celebrations and support the launch of this new club. The Lions Club of Christchurch City Breakfast are having their annual Trivia Evening, once again to be held at The Hornby Workingman s Club on Monday 30th May. We have traditionally entered two teams so please let Andrew know if you are available to join in the fun, frivolity and festivities translated this means lots of laughing. A reminder and final call for names will be given at our meeting on Wednesday 18 th May. Lion Keith Stockbridge is currently unwell so our visit to Rhodes on Cashmere is postponed. Any suggestions for other events please let Andrew or a committee member know. 4 From 2nd VP Don Mackay 1/ New Brighton Project Market on Saturday 23rd April went off well. My thanks to Jim, Bob, Peter, Alastair and our new member Cheryl. With it being a holiday weekend there weren t a lot of people around. We banked $ After costs were deducted we made a profit of $72.00 A bit of a paltry sum but we have committed to doing a BBQ every month for the rest of the year so it can only get better. Please mark in your Diary the following dates for the rest of the year: 28th May, 18th June, 23rd July, 18th August, 17th September- Pirates Day, 15th October, 26th November, Rockabilly and 17th December. Market hours 10am-2pm, we do it in 2 shifts & people per shift -6 in total. 2/ As you know I have been elected President for the next Lions Year. I have a hard act to follow - so will give it my best shot. I have selected Sunday June 19th as the Change over Date and have started planning. In the mean time Jenny and I are looking forward to attending Lions National Convention in Timaru this weekend, a first me. See you on Wednesday, Don From 3rd VP Ray Scott Dick Johns has returned to Christchurch well refreshed from his cruise around the islands. His comments regarding the meals and then entertainment gave a good indication that he enjoyed it so much that the next trip is being planned. Dick's tan showed that he took advantage of the fine weather. I have phoned Keith Stockbridge at the hospital. He is slowly recovering and hopes to return home in the near future. At the moment he is in Ward 27. When I spoke to him he was enjoying sitting in the sun and taking in the view. Regards Ray Page 4 BULLETIN

7 IRVING BERLIN Although he was born in Russia, Irving Berlin created songs that epitomize American music. As Michael Walsh said in Time, Berlin s songs are as much part of American culture as any folk song. They seem to have been with us always, defining the spirit of a nation in an artless melody, or an unexpected harmonic twist. During his lifetime, Berlin published more than one thousand songs, some failures and many successes; some have been forgotten, and some, such as White Christmas and God Bless America, will be remembered always. Berlin could not read music, but he is one of the twentieth century s most beloved composers. Berlin s life began in poverty. He was born Israel Baline on May 11, 1888, the youngest of the six children of Lena and Moses Baline. Fleeing Russian persecution of Jews, his family arrived in the United States in 1893 and settled into an immigrant tenement neighborhood in New York City. The older members of the family took jobs where they could find them, but money was still too scarce. Shortly after his father s death in 1901, young Israel left school and home to earn his living. Between the ages of 14 and 17, Israel Baline made money as a busker, or a street singer. He would roam from brothel to bar, singing for the coins the generous would toss. In 1905 he secured a full-time job as a singing waiter at Mike Salter s Pelham Cafe in New York City s Chinatown. When the bartender at a rival bar scored a big success by writing a new song to sing in his bar, young Baline set out to do the same. In 1907 he published his first song, Marie From Sunny Italy. The artist who drew the cover for the printed music of the song misprinted his name as I. Berlin; thinking the name sounded more American than Israel Baline, the composer renamed himself Irving Berlin. Broadway shows include Watch Your Step, 1914, Stop! Look!
