As the Crow Flies The holiday season is upon us now and there is no retreat. We must start planning the family get together, which in some families, could be hazardous. You know, the mother in-law, sisters and brothers that are estrange from the family and all the cooking and mess it entails. Yea, I can hardly wait for all the excitement to happen. Now that I kind of put a negative on the whole holiday thing, let me put some positive in the game. We all look forward to visiting our family members and getting together is always a laugh or two. Unlike most perceived families, mine is very rewarding. I have a great mother-in-law and several sister-in-law's and that includes my brother and his wife, and last but not least my children and grandchildren. I love them all. We do what most people do for the holidays, we try to get together and celebrate the country s Thanksgiving Day. We try to come up with something we are thankful for and pass it along. It seems that most of us are thankful for our families and that we can share this special meal together. This year, we are going to add something different to our wishes. We will add prayers to the people of the world to heal their sickness and hope that they too can be thankful for something. They need our prayers and if you just think about them, you have given a silent hope for them. That takes care of Thanksgiving. Now comes the real expensive one, Christmas. What I do enjoy though is going to the mall and watching all the shoppers rushing around to find that one special gift. Of course, this only works if I have completed my own shopping. I love all the decorations and music and cheer that is around us. When I was a boy, yea I know a long time ago, I remember going to my aunts and uncles houses for Christmas celebrations. We always got dressed up in our Sunday best, polished shoes, dress shirt and tie, dress coat and pants, wow I was Donald Trump for a day, lol. I m sure most of you did the same thing. For me, it always made me feel special. I walked with my head held high and strutted my stuff around, at least until we started playing with my cousins, then I was back to normal. You would think that Thanksgiving would be the day to bring back memories, but for me, it s Christmas. I remember going to midnight mass all dressed up and excited about getting home to open one gift. I couldn t think about what was going on at mass because of all the presents under the tree. It wasn t until I got a little older that I realized what Christmas was all about, the birth of our Savior. That will always be my belief and to this day, I think of that time when I realized the true meaning of the holiday. Page 2

With that being said, off I go to spend all the money I don t have, to buy those gifts before everybody else gets them. Then I can go and watch the crazies running around shopping, looking at all the decorations, and listening to the music. What a great feeling to be free. On a side note, we said that November 1st will by the last day to pay for and sign-up for the Christmas party. This month s meeting on the 12th, will be the absolute last day. We will not be able to accept anyone at the door who has not signed up. Gail and I would like to wish all the members with Sierra Eagles A Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you have a wonderful day and that you reach all your destinations safely. Ken & Gail Crow Chapter Directors nvecd@yahoo.com Page 3

A Message from the Assistant Chapter Directors At our October meeting, I asked the attending members what the recommended procedure is for checking the oil on a Gold Wing. We found that several members were not checking it properly; thus the reason for this month's newsletter article. The following is a reprint from the RED PAGE from American Honda, September 2016 issue. Probably the simplest maintenance checks you can perform on your Gold Wing is checking the oil. I bet more than half of you are doing it wrong. Why, because of a single devilish detail. Most Honda Motorcycles use one of two methods to verify oil level; a dipstick or a sight glass. The Gold Wing 1800 uses the latter. What could be simpler? You've probably used a dipstick on every car you've ever owned. To check the oil, your bike needs to be upright on a firm level surface, and that means using your center-stand. If the bike hasn't been running, start your engine and let it idle for three to five minutes, then stop the engine and wait another two to three minutes. If you've been riding, just shut the bike off and wait the two minutes. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean. Then - and here's that devilish detail - reinsert the dipstick, but don't screw it back in. Just dip it full length into the crankcase and then remove. There are two marks on the stick, and your oil level should be between the two. Half of the owners that we watched, screwed the dipstick back in to check their oil. This gives a false (and artificially high) reading. This little advice applies to virtually all Honda motorcycles which use a dipstick to determine oil level. Dipsticks vary from model to model. If you compare the length of the threaded portion of your dipstick to the distance between the high and low marks, you can see that screwing the dipstick back in can easily throw that reading off by as much as 50 percent. Sure, this whole dipstick method may seem like a little thing, but it's the difference between doing it the right way and the wrong way. And as riders, we all know that it's those little details - and paying attention to them - that make all of the difference. And it also under - scores the importance of reading your owner's manual or service manual. There, your definitive sources for the right way to do things. 5 A Message from the Chapter Educator TO TRIKE OR NOT TO TRIKE By Wayne Peterson Faulty or preconceived notions often hold us back from trying new adventures. We form opinions based on what we've heard, or seen, but seldom from personal experience. For me, I had put trikes into that box of preconceived notions and never tried to think outside of it, that is, until I rode a Lehman Conversion and ripped that box wide open. Trikes 101 I am struck by the words of our instructor Kevin. "It's easier for us to teach people who have never ridden motorcycles, to ride a trike, than to teach people who have ridden 30 or 40 years." This goes against everything we ever learned. Experience, we've been told, is always the best teacher. But not with riding a trike; here the experienced must be untrained from two wheel thinking, to three-wheel riding. First Rule Never, ever, put your feet down. There are three wheels, so you won't tip over. But most certainly you can "mouse trap" your feet under the body or rear wheels - not an enjoyable experience. Second Rule All units have a hand brake, just like the one in your car, and you must release it before moving out. Without a kickstand, there's nothing but the hand brake to keep the trike from rolling into Grandma's Corvette. Third Rule The wheelbase of a trike is the same as that of the two-wheeler, but because of its bodywork, it's slightly longer and a whole lot wider. To determine just how wide, once seated, stretch out your arms -- that's the width you must allow for when cornering. Fourth Rule A trike involves "direct steering." Point into the direction of travel, lock your outside elbow into the turn, and then roll on the throttle through the turn - this differs from a two-wheeler where you counter steer and lean through a corner. Using the Point, Lock, and Roll system, we went into, and out of, every type of corner quicker than when riding any comparable two wheeler. And what's more, we did so with increased confidence from not having to brake or steer around light road debris, such as sand and gravel. Fifth Rule Look into and ahead of your direction of travel. Good advice, whether on two, three, or four wheels. Sixth Rule Use both front and rear brakes. On a two-wheeler, your rear brakes are 30 percent of your stopping power. On a trike, though, two rear wheels mean twice the stopping power, so you don't want to override your front wheel. Even in panic stops, the trike stops quickly and keeps straight. 7 . Membership Enhancement News Hello everyone! I can t believe it s November already. The summer went by way too fast! I hope the winter goes by just as fast so we can plan some more fun rides. Ken and I have only been members of Sierra Eagles for three years. I can t even imagine life with out Sierra Eagles. We have made so many friends and you re all very special to us. You will not believe this, but before we joined GWRRA Ken was very quiet. Now look at him, he is a social butterfly. I just want to say thank you for being part of our life. We also love going to Region F Rallies and Wing Ding. We enjoy meeting people from other Chapters. I would love to hear from all of you how Sierra Eagles has affected you. If enough people respond we could do a special article with everyone in it. I have talked to Ken about doing a membership drive this Spring. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. What do you think about having a game night? Since we won t be riding in the winter, I thought it would be fun to have a game night. What do you think? You know as a Membership Enhancement Coordinator my job is to come up with FUN activities. I will take any other ideas anyone might have. 10 Sierra Eagles RV Sig News The fires and the weather didn't cooperate, consequently, we had to cancel our last planned RV Rally for the year to Lake Topaz. I'm sure our Wagon Master's Dusty and Joan Rhodes had a great get -together planned. All RVer s get ready for winter: I want to remind everyone to be sure and winterize your RV. If you need assistance, let one of your committee members know. I'm sure we can offer advice and possibly some assistance. We'll look forward to some great plans for rally's next year. Please remember the RV committee is always looking for ideas and suggestions for great outings. 11 Words from Our Nevada District Directors Hello Region F, I wanted to let everyone know what a great job was done by the Las Vegas chapter and its members in putting on their yearly Fund Raiser, The Jackass Poker Run on October 7 th and 8 th, I hope that those of you who have yet to attend, do so next year. A Fun time was had by all those who participated. This year there were Men s and Women s Grand Prizes, Game Night, Poker Run, Meet and Greet BBQ at Ride Now, Rider Education Seminars, Goody Bags, Event Pins, Self-Guided rides, Awards Dinner Banquet, Food Court, Live Entertainment, Raffle Prizes, and last but not least, covered parking. Mark your calendars and make this a must attend event in Looks like it's that time of the year when everyone is on the road. Last chance to see this great country before the fall colors are set and the snow begins to fall in earnest. I always marvel at the great wonders of our land from sea to shining sea, aka coast to coast. So, while you still have some great riding weather, sight see your areas before it s all gone to the winter months. Micky Farrington Nevada District Director Page 11

Region Directors Andy and Sherry Smith There is a fall in the air...no not the "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!" kind of fall. But the cool, crisp autumn is a com'n kind of fall. Hay rides and color rides - "let's put on the electrics" kind of rides. Yep, all the Region Chapters are a buzz'n with great ideas for fall rides. We are privileged to be in the Rocky Mountains during this amazing season. The Aspen trees have now lost most of their color, but the sights we get to see as we 'Wing' our way from one place to another are simply amazing! We hope all of you are getting a chance to partake of the amazing scenery in your area. Check out your District's and Chapter's Calendar and pick out your kind of ride! As those leaves are fall'n (at least in Colorado), we want to remind those who are still getting out to ride, we want each you to be around for all the fun that we are planning for next year. So keep your head on a swivel and watch out for wet leaves and other slick stuff. Many of you are making those final preparations to head off to the Arizona District Rally. Boy do they have a great time planned for everyone that is able to make it to Lake Havasu! There will be lots of time for Fun & Friends, with some Safety and Knowledge thrown in for good measure. Please support the Arizona district in any way you can! Your new Region Directors are "Mickey Bound!" Yep, for 7 glorious days at the beginning of November we will be in Florida sunshine hav'n our fill of all things at Disney. Have no fear! Your Region Team will be hold'n down the fort for us while we are temporarily out of pocket. Ride Safe Have Fun! Andy & Sherry Smith Page 12

Region Trainer Harry and Amy Jenkins This question has been asked of me more than once so I decided to put my answers to paper. 1.Camaraderie - getting to meet other GWRRA members from your District, Region, and the nation and if you're real lucky some from other countries plus seeing old friends just like a big reunion but with people you like. 2. Learning opportunities The number of classes that are available. At most District convention you will have Advanced Rider Course (ARC), Trike Rider Course (TRC), First Aid/CPR, and a multitude of Rider Education Classes. At region you will have these plus Officer Certification Program (OCP), University development Trainer Program (UDTP) and Leadership Training Program (LTP) Classes just to name a few. At Wing Ding you will have these and more. 3. Bike and Light shows you don't have to enter to have fun watching and looking at some great looking bikes and to see a great light show of what some of our members have done with their bikes. 4. The ride to and from the convention. 5. Venders from near and far with some Great Deals. 6. Games. On bike games and some off bike games 7. Mascots viewing/saving (HINT) 8. Awards: Couple of the Year (COY), Individual of the Year (IOY) and Chapter of the year just to name a few. 9. 14 Sleep is a Powerful Biological Drive Frequently we write about the need to Look out for motorcycles. One of the major reasons motorists do not detect or see motorcycles is DWD Driving While Distracted. If I start a trip without having adequate sleep (that varies from person to person, could that lead to inattention and a collision? You be the judge. The following article comes from the Good Sam Club We would all like to think that we are safe drivers, able to quickly make the right decisions, react to hazards and dangers instinctively, and avoid impaired thinking due to drowsiness. But sleep is a powerful biological drive - one that can overtake even the best driver, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Rolling down the windows and turning up the radio volume - these tricks don t work. And, unfortunately, it is not always obvious that you re too tired to drive. Warning signs include trouble focusing, frequent blinking and heavy eyelids. Are the last few miles a blur? Have you missed traffic signs and exits? If your mind wanders and you find yourself yawning, it s time to call it a day. Take the necessary steps to avoid drowsiness before you start your drive as well as while on the road. Here are some tips: Get 7-8 hours of sleep before your drive. If you didn t get enough sleep the night before, take a short nap before starting to drive. If you feel drowsy mid-trip, find a safe place to park and take a 20-minute nap. Allow 15 minutes to clear post-nap grogginess before re-starting. Switch drivers if possible every two hours to take a walk and get some fresh air. Do some stretches and foot circles. Deep breathing raises blood oxygen levels, which slows your heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and improves circulation, ultimately aiding mental performance and energy. Don t drink alcohol, as even the smallest amount can cause drowsiness. Do drink caffeine, which improves alertness. Repeat when effect wears off, usually after a few hours. If you begin to feel drowsy, start a conversation or play mind games to keep your brain alert. Avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m., as this is when your body s biological rhythms kick in and sleepiness is most intense. Don t rush to meet a schedule. Safety is more important than arriving on time. Stay hydrated by drinking liquids while you drive. Studies have shown that daily exercise was more effective in increasing energy and reducing daytime fatigue than some medications used to treat sleep problems. Regular exercise also improves quality of sleep. Cliff and Char Simpson, Region F MAP Coordinators Page 14
