7 WEEK 46: November 16, 2014 THE BIBLE IN A YEAR READING: GALATIANS, EPHESIANS, PHILIPPIANS, COLOSSIANS Background: Each of these four letters reveals a different aspect of Paul's personality and message. GALATIANS The Letter of Christian Freedom "For freedom, Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore." (5:1) This is the key verse of Galatians, one of the earliest of Paul's letters. In this letter, like Romans, Paul spells out clearly the relationship of the gospel and the law. The letter has an urgent, almost desper-ate, tone as he pleads with Christians to make the proper decision not to fall into any kind of legalism. EPHESIANS The Letter of Christian Unity "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all." (4:4-5) The theme of this letter is clear. The death of Christ on the cross not only reconciled us to God; it also reconciled us to other human beings. Ephesians seems more like a sermon which circulated among a variety of congregations than a letter. PHILIPPIANS The Letter of Christian Joy "Therefore, my brothers and sisters whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved." (4:1) Written from prison, this is one of Paul's warmest and most loving letters. It was written simply as a thank you letter for a gift which the Philippian church had sent to him. COLOSSIANS The Letter of Christian Sufficiency "In him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell." (1:19) Full of beauty and grace, this Christcentered letter was written by one of Paul's representatives. Paul tacked on a P.S. The main point is clear. We need nothing more than Jesus to be saved. Points to Ponder: 1. Walking by the Spirit and the Fruit of the Spirit are ways Paul uses to talk about the lifestyle of Christians. (5:16-26) The fruit is an inner quality which helps one to live the outer qualities of the Christ-like life. 2. Eph. 3:14-21 is one of the most moving prayers in the Bible. Martin Luther called Ephesians, "One of the noblest books in the New Testament which shows Christ and teaches everything necessary and good for to know." 3. A bit of an ancient Christian hymn is quoted in Philippians 2:6-11. Here Paul talks about Jesus "emptying" himself to serve. What does it take to "empty" yourself? What persons have emptied themselves for you? What happens to persons who are too "full of themselves?" Questions: 1. What was Paul's handwriting like? (Gal. 6:11) 2. What is the "armor of God?" (Eph. 6:11-17) 3. What should a Christian think about? (Phil. 4:8) 4. Who was called "the beloved physician" or - in some translations - "our dear doctor?" (Col. 4:14)
