The Peace Action Team is inviting you to send cards of encouragement to the EYN Church in Nigeria. Please place your cards in the basket out side the Church Office. Table Talk with Dennis will be on Thursday, July 31, at 7:30 a.m. at Hometown Restaurant. Please register on our website or through the church office. The Facility Options Task Team has posted 4 options for renovations for your review in the Fellowship Hall, Narthex or on our website. Please note, the 4th option is a new idea! Questionnaires are available at the displays for your input. Members of the team will be available during fellowship time to address any questions. A Town Hall Meeting will be held on Sunday, August 17, during the study time at 10:30 a.m. for further discussion. Youth Fundraiser! During the months of July and August the youth will be distributing empty film canisters (35 mm). Fill the canister with quarters and return it. Baskets for filled and empty canisters will be outside the Church Office and in the Narthex. Have you met Shelley, our MSS intern? She would love to meet and get to know you over a meal. There is a list of dates on a poster by the Office when Shelley is available. Jot your name down in a slot that works for you! Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 29 at the East Fairview COB at 5:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 7:00 p.m. There will be a time for refreshments and fellowship after the service. 5 WEEK 31: August 3, 2014 READING: JEREMIAH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR Background: Much of the book of Jeremiah does not follow the order which things happened. For example, the Temple Sermon was given in Jeremiah 7:1-15, but what happened to Jeremiah because of it is described in Jeremiah 26. When kings are mentioned in Jeremiah it helps us understand the sequence. The kings during the lifetime of Jeremiah were: 1. Josiah, who died in 609 B.C. 2. Joahaz reigned only three months and was take captive into Egypt. 3. Jehoiakim, king until 598 B.C. 4. Jehiachin, called Coniah in some translations, also reigned only three months. He was taken captive into Babylonia. 5. Zedekiah reigned the last 11 year of the kingdom of Judah, until Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 B.C. One of the, main interests of Jeremiah was the religious interpretation of. political-events, and this week's assignment in Jeremiah is-full. of international politics. In this period, Jerusalem was a political football between Egypt and Babylonia. As time went by it became clear that Babylonia was winning. When everyone recognized that the defeat of Judah was inevitable, Jeremiah finally began speaking of hope and of the future. When things seemed most gloomy, he invested in land. Points to Ponder: 1. Only in the last chapters of this week's assignment does Jeremiah talk about future hope. Jeremiah seems to counsel God's people that hope. will come by going through the worst and coming out on the other side, not by avoiding the worst. 2. Jeremiah's message in the face of threat to his country was that what may be bad for the country may be good for God's people. Jeremiah was opposed by a host of folks who felt that patriotism was a part of religious faith. Patriotism is good and religious faith is good. What danger is there when one does not keep those two separate? Some Questions: 1. Did Jeremiah want to be a prophet? (20:7-18. See vs. 9 especially.) 2. What does Jeremiah say it means to "know God?" (22:16) 3. Who was Jeremiah's secretary? (36:4) 4. What happened to the first book of Jeremiah? (36:1-26) In the long days before the fall of the kingdom, the people of Judah hoped for miraculous rescue, fought for their freedom and attempted all sorts of international alliances to protect themselves. Jeremiah was against every effort his country made to protect its freedom. He saw the defeat of Judah as being something sent by God. No wonder he was hated, thought to be a traitor to his country, arrested, and nearly killed!
