nto the Noble Barony Bordermarch, UHE Santiago & HE Elisabeth, do send these warm greetings... O ur thanks go out to Lady Jillian for putting together Bordermarch s most recent A&S Day gathering at HE Therese s abode/studio. And thank you HE Therese for letting us trash your house. HE Elisabeth and I arrived early, but not before Countess Tessa and Sir Simonn had already begun setting up the Medieval Cooking demonstration. It was originally planned to have a pit fire for the cooking demonstration, but the weather was not happening in our favor that day. Although it was misting and getting colder by the minute, Countess Tessa carried on in true SCA spirit and held her cooking demonstration outside anyway. Our A&S Officer, M Lord Atli, arrived with a car full of shield press stuff, chainmail making gear, and shields. He thought he would have time enough to punch out a few more wooden shields on his handy, totally portable, shield press, but he was wrong! His beginner s chainmail making class was very enlightening to a few of our newest members who had never witnessed it being made before. M Lord Atli provided everyone in the class with several pliers and enough pre-bent mail rings to put together a small four-on-one mail coif. The coifs were very small, but would still easily fit some of the pin-heads I call friends. All of M Lord Atli s chainmail students, except one, excelled at putting together their project. Lord Vaclav Slovaczek ended up with something that resembled a logging chain. He might have been distracted when he told Lord Phocas and myself stories of his youth in Czechoslovakia. It seems he ate foot long kola-cheese (forgive the spelling) for every meal. He lamented on and on until we left. Lord Phocas came prepared to teach everyone how to make bamboo flutes. We did learn that bamboo comes in different thicknesses, and that its final tonal characteristics depend on what side of the Highway you pilfer it from. He demonstrated how to use a blow-torch to speed up the drying time, and told us to never let it catch on fire. The fine art of locating the finger holes was touched on and then released like a hot potato. There is a lot of theory and math involved, and we weren t ready for it yet. He told us to drill a hole in the top of the bamboo and blow through it. If it sounded good you were on the right track. Lord Phocas also brought his newest creation designed to test his brain power and endurance. We ll have to wait and see the results. Lunch was served indoors due to the temperature falling, but the cozy atmosphere inside HE Therese s house made it all OK. Countess Tessa served up the food she had prepared in her cooking demonstrations and everyone chipped in with a platter of goodies to eat. All the fighters gathered in HE Therese s laundry room and held in-depth discussions on fighting techniques. HE Don Armand held an impromptu Courtly Graces class and everyone finally realized that he was truly way better than anyone else in the world! HE Amber Lea lead the singing and gifted the barony with a compilation of bardic pieces she and others had collected throughout the years. She had them gathered into a book that will guarantee Bordermarch s continuation of its long tradition of studying and performing the crafts of the medieval Bards. Lord Biau temporarily escaped from his duties at sea to grab up his Lady Karen and together they teased us with their presence at our A&S Day event; it was a wonderful treat for everyone. Lady Jillian discussed and helped newcomers and old comers with their Heraldic names and devices. With her on the job, it won t be long before our entire populace has their own devices registered. Gulf War has come and gone, but we ll talk about that in next month s newsletter. We nailed down our Event Stewards for this year s Baronial; they are Lord Nikolai and Lord Malcolm, and they will be taking care of all your needs at Baronials. Our confidence in their ability is sort of unwavering, but with everyone s help, this year s Baronial should be a blast! What with the upcoming baronial investitures at Ravens Fort and Stargate, a new Coronation, Queens, and everything else, we should all be plenty busy, but please do not forget about your elders. You can get your gifts to me when we next meet. And finally, don t forget to send in your letters of intent if your thinking of hosting next year s 12th Night. In Service We Remain, Santiago et Elisabeth Baron and Baroness of Barony Bordermarch

For All the Saints Contributed by Lady Ellen the Quiet of Bordermarch Saint Cecilia t. Cecilia was born of noble parents Sin Rome who raised her in the faith of Christ. As a child, Cecilia was vigilant in her devotion to Christ and promised herself to God. However, the day did come when she was betrothed to a young man named Valerian. Cecilia s wedding gown was made of gold, but she wore hair underneath. When she heard her wedding music, Cecilia closed her ears and sang in her heart to God. In song, she asked that her heart and body remain pure so that she did not become confounded. When the time came to consummate the marriage, Cecilia told Valerian that she had a secret she wished to share with him. Valerian promised to hear her secret and never tell it to anyone else. Cecilia then told Valerian that she had an angel who loved her and did not want her spoiled in any way. Cecilia added that if this should happen, the angel would kill Valerian. After some thought, Valerian asked Cecilia to show him this angel. If he found that the angel was man, then Valerian would kill both the man and Cecilia. If he found that the angel was, indeed, an angel, Valerian would do whatever Cecilia asked of him. Cecilia then instructed Valerian to be baptized by Pope Urban; and when he was able to profess his faith and be purged of his sins, he would see her angel. Valerian did as he was asked; and upon returning to Cecilia s room, he found her talking to an angel. The angel gave both Valerian and Cecilia a crown of roses and lilies. The flowers of these crowns never lost their scent, and their color never faded. The angel then told Valerian that he would be granted anything he wanted. Valerian then said, There is nothing in this world to me more dear than my brother, whom I would fain that he might know this very truth with me. Shortly afterwards Valerian s brother Tyburtius visited the couple. It is written that Tyburtius felt the sweet odor of the roses and lilies but could not see the crowns. Valerian explained that if Tyburtius converted and was baptized, he would be able to see the crowns. And so, Tyburtius was baptized by Pope Urban, And from then forth on he had so much grace of God that every day he saw angels, and all that ever he required of our Lord he obtained.

Saints continued... Then came the day that Almachius, provost of Rome, heard that the brothers had given away all their goods to the poor. He also heard that Valerian and Tyburtius were burying Christians that were martyred of which, by now, there were quite a few. Almachius interviewed the brothers then commanded them to make sacrifices to the Roman god, Jupiter. In short, the brothers refused and were beheaded. At the scene of their deaths, angels appeared and took the souls of Valerian and Tyburtius to heaven. A great many converts were made that day. Cecilia took the bodies of her husband and brother-in-law and buried them but not without notice. Almachius summoned Cecilia who did not go down without a fight of sorts. Almachius asked Cecilia who she was and she replied that she was of noble kindred. Almachius then demanded to know her religion. Cecilia replied that if he wanted to know that to begin with, he had asked one question that required two answers. Almachius then ask, From whence cometh thy rude answer? Cecilia replied, Of good conscience and faith not feigned. Almachius asked Cecilia if she knew who he was and what his powers were to which Cecilia replied, Your power is little to dread, for it is like a bladder full of wind, which with the pricking of a needle is anon gone away and come to nought. Almachius then advised Cecilia that the prince had given him the authority over granting life or death. Cecilia replied that she would prove him a liar. She argued that he could take away the life of the living but could not raise the dead. Therefore, he was a minister of death and not life. Almachius offered Cecilia her life but only if she would make sacrifice to the Roman gods. Cecilia refused. Cecilia was condemned to suffocate by a hot air bath (sauna), but neither did she burn nor was her hair singed. Almachius then ordered her beheaded. The axmen struck Cecilia s neck three times, but it did not kill her. It was Roman law that if after three blows the condemned still lived, a fourth would not be attempted. With her head half severed from her body, Cecilia laid on her bathroom floor for three days. She continued to preach the faith to those who had gathered to watch her die, and she gave all her possessions to the poor. Pope Urban buried her body among the bishops, and her house was turned into a place of worship. St. Cecilia s feast day is November 22nd, and she is the patron saint of musicians and church music, luthiers, musical instrument makers, composers, poets, singers and martyrs.

SCA Terms, History Lessons and Demo Contributed by Lady Angelica Veronica de Granada*, Barony Hospitaler Χαιρετισμούς am happy to be able to be I bringing you the next article of the Nuevo y Viejo. These articles are so much fun for me and am hoping they are enjoyable for you. As you may have noticed every month I have started off my articles with a word, that you probly can t read. Well the word says greetings, each month I have tried to have a new lauguage presented. This month I have chosen the Greek language. I hope this inspires you to also look into the culture and find out some facts you may have not known about! Like I have learned that the Greek performers (belly dancers, actors, poets, etc.)actually wore masks while preforming. Their masks depicted the god s and goddesses. It was a like a way of paying your respects to the gods. I found this to be very interesting and our belly dancing group has decided to add a mask to our outfits. Don t forget the demo for Raven s Fort coming at the end of April. It is being held at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville,Tx, April 29-May 1. For more information contact me or go to samhoustonfolkfestival.org. I also found a very helpful and useful list of words on the SCA site and I figured it would be nice to share it with everyone. GOOD GRIEF, What do they mean by that?if you ve just joined the Society, you may find conversations and event announcements hard to follow at first. SCA participants, chapters and offices all assume names with a historical flavor, and there s a whole vocabulary for everyday things as well. You ll get used to it quickly, but here are some of the most commonly used words to start with. ABOUT PEOPLES Adian (SKAY-dee-an) as a noun: a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Also: SCAer. Used as an adjective to mean of the SCA. Gentle any person, not gender-specific. Populace the inhabitants of a kingdom or local group; the people present at an event. Pelican someone recognized by the King and Queen for great service to their Kingdom and the SCA. Squire - a student in a formal relationship with a Knight or Master of Arms. Apprentice a student in a formal relationship with a Master or Mistress of the Laurel. Protégé a student in a formal relationship with a Master or Mistress of the Pelican. Peers companions of the Chivalry, Laurel, and Pelican. Royal Peers Viscounts, Viscountesses, Counts, Countesses, Dukes, and Duchesses. A Viscount/ess has served as Prince/ess of a Principality. A Count/ess has served as King/Queen of a kingdom once, and a Duke/Duchess has served more than once. Minister the gender-neutral version of Mistress/Master for office names. Mistress/Master title used by companions of the Orders of the Laurel and Pelican, and Masters-of-Arms. Also part of some office names, i.e., Mistress of the Lists, Master of Arts & Sciences. Dame - an alternate title used by female members of the Orders of Chivalry, the Laurel or the Pelican. who do not wish to use the title Mistress or Sir. Look for more to come next issue! Thanks for everyone who are helping spread the word and keep it up. If there is any garb or other such things you would like to donate for loner gear then let me know and I will make arrangements to get them from you. *Lady Angelica Catolina Veronica de Granada, daughter of HE Valencia Carlota Maria de Granada, Mother to Elvin the Hunter and Claudia Maria de Granada, Captive of The Company of the Phoenix. Hospitaler for Barony Bordermarch.

Nuevo y Viejo Presented by Lady Angelica Catolina De Granada Barony Bordermarch Hospitaler SCA Name: Still working on this, any suggestions!! Eireayn or Melia or Zaryn or... Mundane name: Melia Ferguson Age: 38 Birthday: Oct 12, 1972 Nuevo (New) How did you hear about our group? A SCA friend of mine from Idaho found it for me when I commented that we in Southeast TX didn t have anything cool like the SCA here...boy, was I wrong...and so very happy I was. Where is your persona based out of: My maternal roots are firmly rooted in Ireland and Irish customs, but my paternal roots are those of a way-wanderer...so still I am undecided. Where would you like your persona to be in a year?: I want my persona to actually select a name and time period. Or is time travel recognized in the SCA? Because I love all the fashions of the centuries. Not to mention some days, I might feel like a nut.. err Elizabethan and some days I don t. Also, I frequently embarrass myself by either spontaneously dancing in public or belting out in song. And believe me, with three left feet and a voice to cause the hounds to whimper, I can generate a lot of attention. What things are you interested in: I love to sew, cook and would love to get back into archery. I am also intrigued by courtly dance and belly dancing. What s one thing you would like everyone to know about you?(sca or Mundane): I don t believe I am cut-out to be a Baroness, but I would gladly serve as her Lady-in-Waiting. HUG ****Ummmmmm some extra info Melia thought was important for someone to know...i am a fiery redhead, brown-eyed, LEFT-handed, short spitfire when rallied up! Viejo (Old) How many years have you been in the SCA: Joined in 81, Angel was born in 86 so Gosh I guess 30 years. Where is your persona based out of: Granada, Spain, 15th century, I was a lady waiting for the Queen, Catherine of Aragon. She was King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella s daughter she was married to Henry VIII. Where would you like your persona to be in a year?(as in involved in): More involved!!! I have always been excited about being involved in the known world. What things are you interested in(sca): Well I think I am interested in it all!!! I am most interested in Spanish history, Spanish costuming, Illumination, and my most favorite calligraphy. What s one thing you would like everyone to know about you (SCA or mundane)?: I have written many things about the SCA and I think the most important thing is the HONOR and SCA Name: HE Valencia Carlota Maria de Granada Mundane name: Janice Terrell Birthday: October, 28th CHIVALRY. It is not only the most important in the SCA world but also in the mundane world. I love how the SCA presses the issue of HONOR and Chivalry because the mundane world has left it out of today society. ******Extra information: The reason for 3 names. At the time, when I was born in Spain, it was custom for three names to be given. The 1st was the childs actual name, Valencia. The 2nd name was a name that represented someone that was in the family, or someone of close relation to the family, Carlota. The 3rd name was a name from the church, Maria. Then the de (city) was added, de Granada, meaning where I am from. This is the reason for the name Valencia Carlota Maria de Granada. Also, my daughter s name Angelica Catolina Veronica de Granada.

A&S Day Starts with a Bang! Contributed by Lady Jillian Saint Andre, OSTB Herald of Bordermarch o! It was La dark and stormy morning! At 5 am a monstrous clap of thunder was heard throughout the lands of Bordermarch. Sir Simonn s house guests shot straight up out of bed from a sound sleep! Thus began the day of Bordermarch Spring A&S! The rain storms had us worried, but we soldiered on; halfway through the morning, Her Excellency Therese got missive to me that the indoor chamberpot had given up the ghost and in its sad death had flooded half the house. Luckily I am partnered to a living saint, and Lord Thomas and I rushed to her aid. Amidst mopping and seal-replacing the attendees began to arrive and I set about the happy job of welcoming our teachers and guests. Countess Tessa was already busily preparing wondrous and beautiful foods for her Camp Cooking class. The weather made it necessary to actually cook indoors, but the prep work was done outside and many lent a hand to stuffing chickens, skewering kabobs, hollowing bread trenchers and other fun, yummy works. As the weather cleared, the temperature dropped drastically and many of our outdoor classes had to be sheltered. Luckily HE Therese s house and lands are so incredibly ample and well-suited to the purpose, everyone could find a place to get in out of the brisk Campfire Cooking Chicken, roasted with rosemary, bayleaves, garlic, pears, mangos, pear juice Turnips sliced coin-thin, boiled, simmered in Butter til tender; seasoned w/ground Peppercorns Small Sleet Sops w/mushrooms & garlic, simmered in winds. HE Armand, aided by Lord Zane and Count Sir Simonn, held his marshaling and field etiquette class in the carriage house while Lord Phocas taught several to produce lovely bamboo flutes in one of the Honey Mead Pears in confection Kabobs of Beef, Yellow Peppers, Green Peppers, Onions Stew/gumbo of Prawn served in small Bread trenchers Cheese selection Candied Citrus rind A&S Day photos by HE Countess Mistress Tessa of the Gardens, Sir Simonn and Lord Zane. numerous work shops. We broke for a splendid lunch of fresh vegetables and fruits, many links of sausage, the aforementioned chicken and kabobs, and a most welcome gumbo A&S Day continued on next page...

A&S Day continued... from Countess Tessa. Finished with King Cake and a berry cobbler, we are always a wellfed Barony! HE Armand then enjoined the entire group in his most popular Courtly Graces class. Everyone seemed to get involved and we were treated to many tales of how we all started in this glorious Dream. Story time was an unexpected bonus to the festivities, vivat Armand! Our hard-working Minister of Arts and Sciences then marched some students back out to the workshop to learn chainmail making. My own Lord Thomas returned filled with glee at the two tiny sample pieces he d made, and I know he wasn t alone! I hope some of the students got the chance to visit Atli s shield press as well; he d brought it for display and I know Thomas asked him about it later. Very impressive work there! Those not chainmail-making were able to hear some poetry and a bit of bard song in the main house as HE AmberLea took requests from Lady Claire la Combe, her fiery friend Annabelle McIver and myself. The hall was well-used for our normal activities of chatting and visiting as well by Lady Lyllianne, M lady Ashley, two new folks, Aaron and Alicia, and our honored B&B. When we d worn out HE AmberLea s voice enough, our Baroness and Atli joined us for the basic heraldry class. Ladies Kemelah and Karen popped in for a visit as well and even Lord Biau-Douz snuck off the boat to regale us with new and more plans in his never-ending creativity fest! All-in-all a terrific day, and all made possible by the good and giving hearts that abound in this Barony as they do nowhere else! Thank you so much to the teachers and volunteers, those who came by even for a few moments, the new people whose names I m sure I ve gotten wrong or forgotten, HE Therese for hosting us all, TEs Santiago & Elizabeth for encouraging us to learn and be better, and my most wonderful Lord Thomas...for keeping me sane and being there when the unexpected crisis arose and handling it perfectly and willingly at a moment s notice. For those who did not attend, you were missed and you missed out! Vivat Bordermarch!

from Tessa s hearth... For to Make a Figgie Pie Contributed by Countess Mistress Tessa of the Gardens, MP Founding Baroness Bordermarch & Hospitaler Blackfox Award: Best Article - A.S. 43 ome of the very most delicious S figgie pie I have ever tasted at an SCA feast was at Defender of the Rose Feast that my sister Rose (then Countess) Her Grace Vanessa assisted me in stewarding the kitchen production of the feast, the year Hurricane Rita knocked out all utilities for 14 days including our freezer filled with most of the feast for over 100 prepped and already frozen...hence lost! With the gracious sponsoring of Countess Maggie, where foods could be normally trucked and bought (whereas trucking to grocers here was not possible), we started over with purchases and preparations and gladly accepted donations. Lady Theresa of Bordermarch was already living in the area where the Defender of the Rose event was to be held, and she happily volunteered to be in charge of figgie pies. Her pies were more delicious than the recipe below Ingredients 5 heaping cups of figs, peeled and halved 1/4 cup water 3/4 cup white granulated sugar 3 Tablespoons cornstarch 2 Tablespoons bottled lemon juice In a 2 quart pot combine the water, sugar, lemon, and Contributed by Mistress Tessa In a feast setting, high table for the royals or nobles would be at the top or high section of a hall. Their tables may have been elevated on a platform so everyone in the room could pay attention to them. Bread loaves were sliced atop and hollowed out as trenchers which soaked in fat juices and oils and from which the juicy meats were presented by servers. cornstarch. Give it a good whisking so the cornstarch doesn t clump. Bring it slowly to a boil, stirring continuously. Add the fruit, and bring the mixture back to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring continuously. Remove from heat. Pour into sterilized jars leaving about 1 headspace. Wipe the rims with a damp cloth, and put the lids on. Process for 30 minutes. Makes 3 pints of pie filling. To cook the Fig Pie: You will need two 9 pie crusts -- one for bottom, one for top -- and 2 pints of fig pie filling. Bake the pie at 425 degrees for 30 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees for another 30 minutes. Feasting Related: Origin of a Phrase: Upper crust The bready top crusts of the loaves were served to the royals and nobles, and the soggy lower remains of the trenchers were thereafter served to the groundlings, the lower class feasters at the lower level of the hall, Hence the phrase upper crust referring to the upper class. (Puts me in mind of the modern advertising phrase: Eat the bowl? Yum!)

Barony holds small demo at Grace Co-Op Contributed by Mistress Tessa Photos by HE Countess Mistress Tessa, Sir Simonn, and Mistress Nerak. Grace Co-Op Home School invited the Barony back for the school s RenCarnival on campus, which was Feb 22. At the Carnival entrance Lord Grant and Lord Zane did an armored fighting demo, while Sir Simonn marshalled and talked with the crowd. Mistress Nerak happened to be visiting (Karen Boelter, moving back to Houston from Tennessee), so she and HE Tessa sat at hand sewing with period background music to greet Carnival arrivees entering the doors. Barony Bordermarch held a Coastal Regional Fighter Practice in March to prepare for Gulf Wars. Watch for Gulf War tales and pictures in the next issue of The Trumpeter!
