Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Background for Teachers Story Connections Last week, we heard the glorious story of Jesus resurrection from the dead. As we move to Acts, the good news spreads. The early Christian believers faced great persecution at the hands of Saul and other Jews who did not agree that Jesus was the Messiah. Yet today s story is one of both conversion and calling. It is powerful to witness the way that God actively changes people s hearts and minds, turning them into believers who wholeheartedly preach God s word and teach others about Jesus death and resurrection. This story opens discussions about what it means to be a Christian in our everyday lives and how we hear God s call. Story Summary: Saul Discovers the Good News Saul was a leader among the persecutors of early Christians. He was a devout Jew who, like many others, did not believe that Jesus was the promised Messiah. He defended his faith by doing whatever it took to eliminate the spreading of the news that Jesus is Lord, including imprisoning believers and persecuting leaders in the Christian church. As Saul walked along the road toward Damascus with the specific purpose of interrupting the preaching and teaching of Christians, he is literally stopped in his tracks along the road by a bright, blinding light. He fell to the ground as he heard the words, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Blinded by the experience, he was led to Damascus by his fellow travelers where he remained without sight for three days. The Point God sometimes calls the most unlikely people to do the work of spreading the gospel. This dramatic calling along the road to Damascus demonstrates the Holy Spirit s ability to change the hearts of people. Both Saul and Ananias were reluctant to carry out what they were called to do. God transforms people by changing their hearts and minds and calling them to service as people who share the story of Jesus love with others. Bible Nuts and Bolts: Paul s Travels/Bible Maps To understand Paul s use of letters and his relationship with the people of the early church, it is helpful to understand the geography affecting these relationships. Paul traveled to many cities and towns, spreading the story of Jesus. A map will show where these different churches were beginning, and how Paul traveled between them. Spiritual Practice: Service Ananias, originally frightened by the prospect of going near Saul, ends up partnering with him in his calling. Christians are called to work alongside one another, support one another, and work together to share God s love in their daily lives. 4

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Lesson Plan Story Centers are mini-activities designed specifically for preschool and kindergarten students. Depending on the size of your class, you can set these up as centers for in-class rotations or do them as a whole class one after another. In most preschool and kindergarten classes, these centers along with a snack, the Learning the Story activity, and the Living the Story activity will fill the education time, but feel free to choose any activity you think would be fun and appropriate for your class. Feeling Faces Set out some cards or a poster depicting various facial emotions (These can easily be found on the Internet by searching feeling faces or at many teachers stores.) along with some unbreakable handheld mirrors. Encourage students to make different feeling faces in the mirror and for one another. Encourage students to copy one another s feeling faces and point out the opposite feelings that are portrayed. Matching Opposites Provide multiple objects that can be arranged into pairs: large and small, smooth and rough, light and dark, round and square, etc. Have kids match pairs of opposites and see how many different pairs they can create. Clay Play Smash Provide some play clay for free play. Demonstrate how to smash the play clay. Make sure to point out that we cannot smash anyone else s creation only our own! Talk about being angry and how it feels. This will relate to how angry Saul was at the beginning of today s Bible story. 5

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 God s love changes us. You will need: Soft, medium-sized ball. During class: 1. Invite students to sit in a circle on the floor as you hold the ball on your lap. Make a sad face and say: Sometimes I feel sad. I get sad when I have a tummy ache or when I do not have any friends to play with. Sometimes I feel sad when I have to stop playing a game and get ready for supper or bed. Can you please show me your sad faces, too? Encourage the students to frown. 2. Do you know what makes me feel better when I feel sad? I feel better when people remind me about how much God loves me! I am going to roll this ball across the circle to one of you. When I do, you can tell me, God loves you! 3. Roll the ball to one of the students. If needed, prompt the student to say, God loves you! to you. When the words are spoken, immediately and dramatically change your facial expression to a look of joy, surprise or excitement. 4. Thank you for sharing that good news with me. I feel so happy! Encourage the child holding the ball to make a sad face and pick another student to roll the ball to. The student who receives the ball then says, God loves you to the person who rolled it, and they will change their face to shows happiness, joy, or surprise. 5. Continue this process until all the students have had the opportunity to roll the ball to someone else. 6. That was a fun game! All of us became much happier when we heard about God s love. God s love changes people! In today s Bible story we will hear about a man named Saul who was mean and angry and sad until God s love changed him, too. 6

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Discover how Paul traveled on this journeys. You will need: Bible with maps Activity Sheet #4-30.A Scissors Crayons or markers Before class: 1. Make copies of Activity Sheet #4-30.A. 2. Prepare a sample of Activity Sheet #4-30.A with the land and water colored and the towns circled. 3. For younger students, cut out the travel squares on the bottom of the sheet. During class: 1. Distribute Activity Sheet #4-30.A. If you have not done so, have students cut out the three squares at the bottom of the sheet with the ship, the foot, and the horse. Show them how to color the land and the water. 2. Today we are going to talk about where Paul traveled. Paul is a person who wrote a lot of the stories in the Bible that tell about what happened after Jesus was raised from the dead. He told the stories so much and to so many people, that churches started to develop in lots of different places. 3. Paul spread the word of Jesus as far as he could. In his lifetime, he traveled almost 7000 miles to teach people about Jesus and God s love. Remember, this was before cars, trains, or planes! 4. Let s look at how far the story of Jesus spread. Sometimes we can use maps that are found in Bibles that will help us learn about the travels of people in the Bible. Show the Bible maps. 5. Last week we talked about the empty tomb, after Jesus was crucified and then came back to life. Do you remember where Jesus was during that story? [Jerusalem.] Do you see Jerusalem on your map? Put your finger on it. Help students find Jerusalem if necessary. Draw a circle around Jerusalem. 6. Let s find some of the other places that Paul visited, and we will circle them on our map. Help the students find Philippi, Corinth, Antioch, Rome, and Ephesus. 7

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, How do you think Paul traveled to all of these cities? Would he drive in a car? No, there were no cars in Paul s time. He might have taken a boat. Use your boat card to show me where he would have traveled by boat. [Over water.] When might he have walked? Or ridden a horse? [Over land.] 8. Paul sure traveled a long way to tell the story of Jesus! Let s say a prayer thanking Jesus for Paul: Dear Jesus, thank you for Paul. Thank you that he was willing to travel by boat and by foot and by horse to tell the story about your resurrection. Amen. 8

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Read a story of contrasts. You will need: Activity Sheet #4-30.B During class: 1. Before Paul was called Paul, his name was Saul. Something happened to Saul that changed him so much, he even changed his name! Today you are going to help me tell the story about Saul and how he was changed from a man who was mean and wanted to hurt people into a man who loved Jesus and wanted to tell others about Jesus wonderful love. 2. Gather students in front of you as you all stand in an open space. Make sure they each have some personal space around them so they can help dramatize the story. 3. Follow the directions on Activity Sheet #4-30.B. Repeat the activity as time allows and as the students stay interested. 4. It is great how Jesus love can change people. How did Saul feel at the beginning of our story? [Mean, angry, sad, mad.] He wanted to hurt people who loved Jesus. 5. As he was walking along the road, what happened to him? [A bright light shone on him. Jesus spoke to him. He was blinded.] I bet Saul was really surprised when that happened. 6. Then after three days of not being able to see and not having anything to eat or drink, someone came to visit Saul. It was a man named Ananias. What did he do? [He placed his hands on Saul s head. He helped him see again. He baptized him.] Ananias helped Paul. We can help other people who need help, too. 9

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Serving one another. You will need: Activity Sheet #4-30.C Small paper plates Large craft sticks Crayons or markers Glue or glue sticks Tape Scissors Before class: 1. Make copies of Activity Sheet #4-30.C. 2. You may wish to cut out the faces ahead of time for young students. 3. If desired, you may also pre-glue the craft sticks onto the paper plates so they are in the shape of a lollipop. During class: 1. Ananias helped Saul in today s story. Jesus sent him to care for Saul and share Jesus love with him. We are all called to love and care for each other by serving them. Today we are going to make some happy and sad faces and use them to talk about how we can show each other Jesus love. 2. Provide each student with a paper plate, faces from Activity Sheet #4-30.C, a craft stick, and scissors (if you have not pre-cut the faces). Have them color the faces and glue one on each side of the paper plate. 3. Tape a craft stick on to each plate so it becomes a handle to hold the plate up in front of each student s face or chest. 4. When each student has a paper plate face, gather around the table or in a circle on the floor. 5. First, can you hold your paper plate faces in front of you so I can see the happy face? Help any students who need assistance getting it turned in the proper direction. I wanted you to show me this face anytime I talk about someone who is sharing God s love with others. 6. Now can you show me your sad face? I want you to show me this face anytime I talk about someone who is NOT sharing God s love with others. 10

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, Once all the students are ready, read the following scenarios one at a time. Talk briefly about each one as their interest and attention allows: At the beginning of our story, Saul was mean and wanted to put people in jail for loving Jesus. (Sad face.) A boy who lives close to you will not ever share his baseball or basketball with you when you play outside, even if you ask nicely. (Sad face.) When a little girl fell down outside your house, you and your mom helped her get up and put a bandage on her scraped knee for her. (Happy face.) When you go to church, the pastors tell you that Jesus loves you very much. (Happy face.) There is an old man who lives down the street who yells at the kids whenever they walk on his grass. (Sad face.) You and your brother bake cookies to take to the man who yells at kids who walk on his grass. You even stay and share them with him because it seems like he is lonely. (Happy face.) At the end of our story today, Saul decided to go to far away places and tell other people about Jesus, too. (Happy face.) 8. We talked about a lot of ways that we can share Jesus love by serving other people. You can take your paper plate faces home with you and play this game with your family, too. 11

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Sing a traditional song. I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy Down in my heart (Where?) Down in my heart (Where?) Down in my heart I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy Down in my heart Down in my heart to stay And I'm so happy So very happy I ve got the love of Jesus in my heart. And I'm so happy So very happy I ve got the love of Jesus in my heart Other possible verses: I ve got the peace that passes understanding I ve got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus I ve got the wonderful love of my blessed Redeemer way down in the depths of my heart 12

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Show contrasts through color. You will need: Activity Sheet #4-30.D Crayons, markers, or paint of assorted colors including black Before class: 1. Make a copy of Activity Sheet #4-30.D for each student. Fold it in half along the line printed in the middle of the paper. During class: 1. Saul changed so much in today s Bible story. We are going to make some pictures that help us remember how much Jesus changes people! 2. Distribute a copy of Activity Sheet #4-30.D to each student with the side facing up that says, Before he knew about Jesus love, Saul felt like this. On this side of the paper, we are going to draw a picture of what Saul was like at the beginning of our story. How did he feel? [Mean, angry sad.] All we have is the color black. You can scribble hard and make your whole page black. Or, you can make a picture of Saul s unhappy face in black. Let s see how mad and sad we can make our papers look. 3. After a few minutes, invite students to turn their pages over and get out all the different colors of crayons. On this side of the paper, you can make a design in pretty colors or can draw pictures of ways that people share God s love with one another, such as by helping others, enjoying one another s company, or telling others about Jesus. 4. As they finish, help them unfold their papers. We made a different kind of art today. Part of it looks sad and part of it looks happy. Can you take it home and use it to tell your family about how Saul was changed in today s story? 5. To close, pray together: God our Father, thank you for loving us all so much. Help us to be like Saul at the end of the story, ready to share your love with everyone. Amen. 13

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Experience cooperation and love. You will need: Building blocks During class: 1. Gather students around you with the blocks in the middle of your gathering. Have each student pick up one block. We are going to build a tower of love today! I am going to start by putting my block on the bottom and telling you one thing I can do to show Jesus love to other people. 2. Place your block in the middle of the students and say: I can hug my family every day. 3. As students think of a way they can share Jesus love, have them say it aloud one at a time and add their block to the tower. Make sure to prompt any students who struggle to think of ways to share Jesus love. Some ideas may include: Helping with chores around the house. Smiling at people as they go for a walk or while shopping. Inviting someone over for dinner or taking a meal to them. Sharing toys. Volunteering at church or in the community. Caring for someone who is sick. 4. At some point, the tower will either be knocked over accidentally or you will run out of blocks. When either of those happens, let the blocks fall and then prompt the kids to say together: Jesus loves us! We can try again! Then everyone can grab another block and start the game over. 5. God loves each one of us so much and wants us to share that love with others. I am so happy we know so many ways to do that! 14

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Share a snack based on the theme. You will need: Raisins Chocolate chips Marshmallows Light-colored cereal (oat or rice O s or squares) Small plates Bowls Spoons Before class 1. Before serving any food, always check with participants or caregivers for students who have food allergies. Provide an alternative if necessary. 2. Place snack ingredients into individual serving bowls. During class: 1. Give each student a plate. Have them take one or two scoops of each item to put on their plate. 2. In our story today, Saul was a bad man. His mood made him sad and full of darkness. Let s put all of our dark-colored snack on one side of our plate. 3. But when Saul met Jesus, he because happy and filled with light! Let s put all of our light-colored snack on the other side of our plate. 4. Let s pray: Dear Jesus, some days we, too, are filled with darkness. But thank you for loving us and filling our hearts with light. Amen. 15

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Optional ongoing activity. You will need: Bible Book page (found at end of lesson) Cardstock or plain paper Pens Markers or crayons Optional: three-ring binders, hole punch Before class: 1. Make copies of this week s Bible Book page on cardstock or copy paper for each student. During class: 1. Pass out Bible Book pages. 2. Read the bottom of the Bible Book page aloud, reminding students of what they learned in the lesson. 3. Have them put their names on their pages, and draw a picture of something they particularly liked or remember from story in the middle of the page. 4. Optional: Collect and three-hole punch the pages, and put them in individual binders for each student to be kept at church until the end of the year. If you wish, you can investigate other options for binding the Bible books through a local print shop at the end of the year instead of using a three-ring binder. 16

Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Before ending class, make a point to come together to pray. Use the following or say your own prayer. Loving God, thank you for changing Saul from a mean man to a loving one. Help us also to show your love to others in everything we do. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. 17

Activity Sheet #4-30.B Lesson #4-30 (PK-2nd) May 6, 2018 Saul on the Road to Damascus Read a story of contrasts. Saul was angry and mean. (Make an angry face and growl a bit.) He did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah and King. (Shake your head no. ) Saul was walking along the road to a town called Damascus. (Walk in place.) When he got there, he was going to find people who believed in Jesus and put them in jail. (Cross your arms and scowl.) As he walked along (walk in place), a very bright light shone from heaven above. (Shield your eyes). It surprised him so much, he fell to the ground. (Crouch down low and stay down). A voice said, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me and try to hurt people who love me? (Cup hands around your ears.) Who are you? Saul asked. (Look worried as you look toward the ceiling.) I am Jesus, the voice said. Get up and go to the city. Someone will tell you what to do when you get there. (Cup hands around your ears again.) So Saul got up. (Stand up straight.) He opened his eyes, but he could not see anything. (Blink your eyes a few times and rub them. Then shake your head.) Saul s friends took his hand and helped him get to the city. For three days (hold up three fingers), Saul could not see anything. He did not eat or drink anything either. (Cover your mouth with your hands.) Then the Lord told a man named Ananias to go see Saul. Ananias was scared because Saul was such a mean man. (Look frightened furrow your brow, bite your fingernails.) But he listened to the Lord and walked to where Saul was. (Walk in place.) He put his hands on Saul s head. (Put your hands on top of your own head.) He said, My friend, the Lord Jesus has sent me to you so you may see again. He has sent the Holy Spirit to be with you. Immediately Saul could see again. (Rub your eyes. Act excited. Jump up and down.) I CAN SEE! I CAN SEE! (Turn in circles and chant the words over and over.) Saul was baptized that day. (Turn to one another, make crosses on one another s foreheads and say, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. ) What an exciting day: First Saul was SAD and ANGRY. (Make angry faces) Then for a while he could not see. (Rub eyes and look confused.) But God changed Saul that wonderful day. (Smile and nod.) The Holy Spirit came to stay. (Flutter fingers from both hands from above your head down to your waist.) Jesus gave his love to Saul. (Hug yourself.) And now he will be able to share it with all! (Outstretch your arms in front of you.) 21

The Home PK-2 nd Living the Word: Teaching Kids God s Story Narrative Lectionary, Year 4 ( ) Lesson #4-30 Acts 9:1-19 Last Week Mary recognized Jesus and heard his command to go tell the disciples about his resurrection. After having appeared to only one disciple (Mary), Jesus appeared to a group of his disciples for the first time, and discussed with Thomas the relationship between seeing and believing. This Week This week we meet the apostle Paul, who takes part in the work of the disciples to announce the forgiveness of sins through the resurrection of Jesus. Story Summary Saul was a devout Jew who did not believe that Jesus was the promised Messiah. He defended his faith by imprisoning believers and persecuting leaders in the Christian church. As Saul walked along the road toward Damascus intending to interrupt the preaching and teaching of Christians, he is stopped in his tracks along the road by a bright, blinding light. He fell to the ground as he heard the words, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Blinded by the experience, he was led to Damascus by his fellow travelers where he remained without sight for three days. Practice: Service Ananias, originally frightened by the prospect of going near Saul, ends up partnering with him in his calling. Christians are called to work alongside one another, support one another, and work together to share God s love in their daily lives. Think of a way you can serve someone who has a sad face and help give them a happy face this week. The Point God sometimes calls the most unlikely people to do the work of spreading the gospel. Bible Nuts & Bolts Paul s Travels/Bible Maps To understand Paul s use of letters and his relationship with the people of the early church, it is helpful to understand the geography affecting these relationships. Paul traveled to many cities and towns, spreading the story of Jesus. Maps can be found online or in Bibles show that show where these different churches were beginning, and how Paul traveled between them. Next Week Having heard of his conversion, we see how Saul s faith plays out during his imprisonment in Philippi.
