PETER S 2018 GRADUATES 8 TH GRADE GRADUATES Isabelle Currier Keaton Lacer Wesley Schneider Zoe Gawlinski Sawyer Loitz Scott Spangler HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES Caleb Benson Caleb plans on a nursing career but has not decided on a school as yet. Austin Jacobson Kaitlyn McMahan- Kaitlyn will be attending Olivet Nazarene University majoring in biology. She will also be playing varsity volleyball. Kurt Reichel Alex Hamilton Sam Toppen Sam will be pursuing a career in welding with local 597. Alyssa Rodriguez COLLEGE GRADUATES Ashlee Ekhoff Ashlee graduated from Olivet Nazarene University with a Bachelor in Social Work. Next semester she will be attending Aurora University for a masters in social work. Laura Erickson Laura graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago Honors College and LAS College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences and Anthropology. 2

3 THE YOUNG AT HEART The Young at Heart group will meet on Monday, June 18 th from 1:00 3:00 PM at the Community Center, Dixie Highway in Grant Park. Cheese and crackers will be served. SERVICE KITS Thank you for your donations! Five buckets were sent to the United Church of Christ Disaster Ministries stocked with muchneeded essential supplies that are used after a natural disaster strikes. JUNE/JULY MISSION GIVING Our Churches Wider Mission (OCWM) Also known as Basic Support, 71% of our contribution stays in the Illinois Conference to carry out the mission at the Association and Conference level. Included are the support of local church pastors and the local church, helping the church through the search and call process, and providing intervention teams to help local churches work through times of challenge. World Hunger (June) Our annual contribution to this organization through our Mission giving helps combat the issue hunger in our country and throughout the world. Emmaus Home (July) - Emmaus Homes has provided services to men and women with developmental disabilities for nearly 115 years. Today, approximately 325 people receive services on Emmaus two campuses in St. Charles and Marthasville, Missouri, as well as in five counties throughout eastern Missouri. While Emmaus Homes is a Christian ministry, it is committed to serving persons of any or no religious persuasion who have a developmental disability. Emmaus Homes is a private, not-for-profit facility related to the United Church of Christ s Council for Health and Human Service Ministries 3

4 FOOD PANTRY The food pantry at St. Luke s UCC in Beecher is currently providing food for families on average. If you are looking for suggestions canned fruit, sugar free items, canned pasta, paper products, and personal products like toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo are always needed. The pantry will be open on from 9:00-11:00, on the second Saturday of each month. Your donations are always appreciated! Thank You! MONTHLY CHURCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS * Committee Members are eagerly working on extra fellowship events. * Council received 3 quotes for new windows. * Missions Committee was able to put together 5 Cleanup Buckets. Thank you for all that donated items. * The emergency phone in the Elevator lift is soon to be operational. * A Knox box will be installed for First responders to access the Church in the event of an emergency. 5 Pastor s Article for June Newsletter June has arrived and with it warm and sometime turbulent weather! But also, new Graduates are out and about, having completed 8, 12, 16 or 18+ years of formal schooling! That s a LOT of knowledge! And sometime folks will stop there. But for many, now begins the equally difficult work of transforming knowledge into wisdom. There is a difference you know! Knowledge: Information which brings understanding it s why we memorize scriptures so that we know them. But knowing a scripture or a fact means we can recall it, but wisdom requires that we know the right time and the right application of knowledge so that it is useful in life and in faith. Wisdom: Using what we know in appropriate and helpful ways; also, an internal sense of what is right and good and what is wrong and needs changing. It is learning from our mistakes. Think for a moment. The number of pieces of information in your brain is incredible, making each one an awesome masterpiece of Creation by our God. But knowing all the information in the world will not be helpful if we don t know how to use it. Even more simply, I can read the instructions about how to put together a computer program but all those words and all those pictures are useless because none of it makes sense to me! I m getting ready to give away the laptop I purchased in January because I can t find any of my programs and I can t make it function properly. I read the words and they might as well be ancient sand script! It s just not going to happen! So we have 4 young people who have just Confirmed their faith in the time honored process and did an excellent job! They learned all sorts of information, memorized the Books of the Bible, the 10 Commandments, the Beattitudes. They researched the Books of the Bible through the Bible Project on line (boy I wish I d had THAT in seminary!) and they have learned how to put together a worship service! Good on them! 5

6 And now? Now begins the difficult process of learning how to use all that good and faithful information to make the world, their world, a better place to live and move and have being. And that takes experiences good and challenging that will require them to recall all that they have learned and to use that knowledge to get through those challenges that life will present to them. They know the steps to take before praying, they know the kinds of prayers to pray. Now they will be called upon for the rest of their lives to use what they know for the good of all people out of the love they have for all of God s created beings. They have been blessed with love and given knowledge beyond anything I could have dreamed of when I was in Confirmation. Yet there is one thing that you and I know with certainty.they will be challenged! They will be tried in the fires of loss and grief and decision making and workforce relationships and life in the world of the future. We have the understanding and the faith to share with them what has been helpful for us to continue following God s pathway. Now it s our job to help them through the briars and brambles on that path. If they are lucky, they will be able, someday, to do the same for the Confirmation Class of 2040! May our faith and our lives be good examples for those who follow us that their lives and faith might be good examples for those who follow them! Amen. 7 Church Life Summer Activities and Plans.. June finish the temporary Directory we will have hard copies but hope to have computer version done first. July Feasting with God continues..july 1 August 26 th Farm Sunday we honor our farmers during worship and ask that several will drive their tractors to church and give tractor rides (for all ages) following worship. At noon we gather for a Farm Picnic Lunch. Church Life is providing fried chicken and asking the congregation to bring the side dishes for an outdoor meal together. July-August time frame there is a fundraiser possibility of a Bunco party in the church basement see Anita. September 8 th a Church Yard Sale we will offer members and community folks a parking space in the south parking lot or on the extra lot (if they have a tent to put up) for $10/space. We will coordinate with the Village as part of the Fall Festival activities. Time: 7am 3pm. Church Life will also take donations from anyone to sell and then send to Vincent DePaul (they will bring a truck that day and remove what is not sold). $1 bag from 2pm-3pm at the Church Life table. November: Turkey Supper and they will begin organizing in July/August as per Shirley K. 7
