The money will be used for missions of the church. TRUNK OR TREAT Sunday, October 28, 2018 the congregation is invited to participate in Trunk or Treat immediately following Worship. Our kids will be dressed up in their Halloween Costumes during Sunday School and excited to Trunk or Treat after Worship! We will have a sign up on the bulletin board for those of you participating. This way we can reserve an appropriate amount of parking spots. We encourage the congregation to dress up as well. Community businesses have been invited to participate, community children are also being invited. (Sign ups by October 21 st!) So mark your calendars and sign up for Trunk or Treat October 28 th at St. Peter s UCC! YOUNG AT HEART The Grant Park Seniors will be meeting on Monday, October 15 th from 1:00 3:00 pm at the Community Center, Dixie Highway in Grant Park. Potluck will be served. 2

3 OCTOBER MISSION GIVING Our Churches Wider Mission (OCWM) Also known as Basic Support, our contributions support God s mission in the Illinois Conference, nationally, and globally. 71% of our contribution stays in Illinois to carry out the mission of the Illinois Conference. Part of that mission is the support of local church pastors and the local churches, helping local churches during the search and call process, and providing intervention teams to help local churches work through times of challenge. We contribute $1, each month to OCWM through our budget. Neighbors in Need (NIN) NIN is an annual special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects FOOD PANTRY The food pantry at St. Luke s UCC in Beecher is currently providing food for families on average. If you are looking for suggestions canned fruit, sugar free items, canned pasta, paper products, and personal products like toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo are always needed. The pantry will be open on from 9:00-11:00, on the second Saturday of each month. Your donations are always appreciated! Thank You! MEAN GREEN GOES PINK Grant Park High School Volleyball teams and Beverly K. Roberts Cancer Foundation would like to announce the Mean Green Goes Pink annual Volleyball game to be held on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 5:30 pm with Gardner South Wilmington doors open at 4:30pm. There will be T-shirt sales, basket raffles, 50/50 raffle, silent auction items. Raffle ticket sales for 2 1/2 hogs with basic processing and ¼ of beef,and a Travel Voucher for $1,200 to be used for a vacation of your choice, no expiration date. Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $25. Basket raffle donations can be dropped off at Grant Park High School beginning October 18, Admission will be $1.00 for all those wearing a 2018 mean green shirt and 3.00 for anyone wearing pink. All proceeds will be given to the Beverly K. Roberts Cancer Foundation to help folks of Grant Park area who are battling all kinds of cancer. Bev was a 1967 graduate of GPHS, enjoyed sporting events and lost her battle with breast cancer in Come out and see super volleyball games and help support this worthwhile cause that has been helping folks of the Grant Park area in

5 From the Interim Pastor. It was a long time ago 19 months when I arrived in Grant Park, kitties crying all the way. Sinatra ran over the Rainbow Bridge in April of this year after having developed bladder cancer. But Miss Pickles came to live with us in June so the void left by Sinatra was filled. There are voids that can never be filled save by God s love! In those 19 months we said goodbye to 13 loved ones.. and we said hello to 11babies! With the babies came New Members: 16, including 4 Confirmands. The Interim Task Force took seriously the process laid before us through the Intentional Interim Network, a national organization that provides training for clergy and that studies churches in transition. We processed and presented the 5 Developmental Tasks of the Interim period: Local Church History, Developing a New Identity, Developing New Leadership, Renewing Denominational Linkages, Developing New Directions in Ministry. Many, many visits with members of this congregation, old and new, hours of teaching and preaching, developing a variety of worship experiences to help stretch you and prepare the congregation for whatever a new minister might want and need to lead this church into the future God has planned for you, all extended to you for personal and communal spiritual growth. As usual, many embraced the newness, but some, not so much. That is to be expected. I know how hard it is to learn to do new things especially in worship! I can guarantee that Pastor Kyle will bring you even newer ways to worship and engaging the Scriptures! It is my hope that you will embrace the gifts he brings to you for your growth. 5

6 It has been a challenging 19 months for us all, but God has smiled upon you in ways that you have yet to realize! The Cluster area clergy have seen Pastor Kyle s picture and are ready to welcome him when he and his family join you. Know that you will be in my prayers as you move forward! 9 September 26, 2018 Dear Member of St. Peter s UCC, A few months ago, you received a letter explaining about our EFT program (electronic funds transfer). We explained what the program entails and how to enroll. This is a convenient way to regularly contribute offerings to our church. As you contemplate whether this is a path you d like to take, we wanted to take this opportunity to explain a few more details about what your offerings mean to St. Peter s and the wider church (UCC). Where does your offering go? Yes, offering donations go into the usual buckets utilities, Pastor, custodial, and secretary salaries and benefits, and overall costs for the maintenance of the church and parsonage. Additionally, St. Peter s is a 5 for 5 Congregation of the United Church of Christ this means that we support the following: 1. Our Church s Wider Mission (OCWM), Basic Support - over half of the funds collected stay in our Conference to help pay for programs and workshops, keeping them affordable for local churches. Sunday school and VBS curriculum, and Adult Bible Study materials all come to us through OCWM. 2. Neighbors in Need - (Oct. 7, 2018 Worldwide Communion Sunday) - One-third of this offering supports the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM) and twothirds is administered by Justice and Witness Ministries to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. 3. Christmas Fund (Dec. 23, 2018) - Provides direct financial assistance to retired and active United Church of Christ authorized ministers and lay employees and their 9

10 surviving spouses, including pension and health premium supplementation, emergency assistance, and Christmas thank-you checks. 4. One Great Hour of Sharing (March 31, 2019) - Provides clean water, food, medicines, shelter, healthcare, education and so much more toward Natural Disaster or Refugee Emergency efforts. 5. Strengthen the Church (June 9, Pentecost) - Supports church growth, pastoral and lay leadership development, youth and young adult ministries within conferences and administered by Local Church Ministries. St. Peter s contribution for 2017 to Our Church s Wider Mission was $13,158 (see the certificate posted on the bulletin board outside the church office and conference room). We hope that you will consider enrolling in the EFT program and help to support not only our church family but the wider church too. Your offerings make a difference in ways that we can only imagine. God s work continues through us. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to the coming months as we begin our journey with our called Pastor, Kyle Timmons. We are so very blessed that God has called him and his family to us, and that you will continue to support St. Peter s.
