July/August 2013 Remembering Mom s Clothesline Just look at that picture. She could be my mom, your mom or anybody s mom! Well, that s not the point of this little article. We think technology is so amazing and advanced now-a-days, but here is a slice of history for some of us that shows us that it was around even when we had never heard of , Facebook, Twitter, Tooter or whatever is the latest information relayer. It all begins with understanding the basic rules for clotheslines. Even if you don t know what clotheslines are, it would be interesting to read this! Make sure you read the poem at the end. That s the communication connection! I can hear my mother now You had to hang the socks by the toes NOT by the top. You hung pants by the BOTTOM /cuffs NOT the waistbands. You had to WASH the clothesline before hanging any clothes by walking the entire length with a damp cloth wrapped around the line. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang whites with whites first. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders always by the tail! What would the neighbors think? Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven s sake! Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your unmentionables in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y know!) It didn t matter if it was sub-zero weather clothes would freezedry. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were tacky! If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pin, with the next washed item. 2

Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed. IRONED???!! Well, that s a whole OTHER subject! There s one thing that was left out. We had a long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the line up so that longer items like sheets and pants didn t brush the ground and get dirty. And now that poem A clothesline was a news forecast, to neighbors passing by, there were no secrets you could keep, when clothes were hung out to dry. It also was a friendly link, for neighbors always knew if company had stopped by, to spend a night or two. For then you d see the fancy sheets and towels upon the line. You d see the company table cloths with intricate designs. The line announced a baby s birth, from folks who lived inside as brand new infant clothes were hung so carefully with pride! The ages of the children could so readily be known by watching how the sizes changed you d know how much they d grown! It also told, We re back! when full lines sagged with not an inch to spare! 3

New folks in town were scorned upon if wash was dingy and gray as neighbors carefully raised their brows and looked the other way. But clotheslines now are of the past for dryers make work much less. Now what goes on inside a home is anybody s guess! I really miss that way of life, it was a friendly sign when neighbors knew each other best by what hung out on that line. Well friends, The Friendly Voice is one of our various clotheslines and on it we hang many different items for the world to see. We encourage you to take the time and look each of them over and see what message might speak to you and how you may be encouraged to participate in the life of Church in all that is happening, yet to happen and needs to happen. There are Bible study opportunities every week, membership classes when people express the desire to join, opportunities to serve each other and people outside the church, and great worship experiences. Look for more information regarding a new picture directory, Dinner and Concert September 7th, Rally Day and Fall Schedule September 8th. As always, I am thankful to be with you on the journey of being the Church! Pastor John 4

Linda Henderson will be leading our Bible Studies this year. Welcome back Linda; we have missed you! In these days of terrorism and violence and animosity, we all need to keep our eyes on Jesus. As the Word says, 'there's no law against love' so let's love God deeper, others sweeter, and ourselves lighter. Mark your calendars now, and save the date. Come and enjoy fellowship, love and spiritual guidance from Linda and fellow women. 8

from our Minister of Congregational Care Bill Bryan Care Notes Men s Ministry Events Summer and Fall Men s Prayer Breakfast (MPB) Third Saturday of each month from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Our Men s Ministry Leading By Example/United Methodist Men (LBE/UMM) recently wrestled with the start time for our monthly breakfasts. After considering making the start time later to reach those that say they would attend but the breakfast starts too early, the men voted to keep the start time at 7:30 a.m. The thinking being that an early start allows them to attend and still have a full Saturday to accomplish the things around their homes and leaves them free to participate in family functions. The breakfast is scheduled for 12 months out of the year we do not take the summer off. The breakfast features various speakers, a time of joyful noise, kindheartedly referred to as singing, a time of intentional prayer; all in addition to a great meal prepared by Anne Tihansky! A love offering is taken to cover the costs. The Men s Prayer Breakfast, which is an ecumenical (various churches/denominations) gathering, also took on the charge of supporting missionaries emotionally, spiritually and financially. We first started years ago by supporting Chaplain Jack and Anne Nigro who eventually got picked up by our missions committee and then Paul and Donna Tocco who also got picked up by our missions committee, and both are now supported by our church s Faith Promise giving. Currently the MPB supports the Martin Family Tony, Gwen, Jensina and Jiana as local folks (Morrisville) called to the mission field of Luleå, Sweden. On July 7, 2013 the Martin Family will be joining us for Sunday worship as Tony shares a message entitled, "Five Traits Every Missionary Needs." 9

Men s Breakfast Club (MBC) Every Thursday morning from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. at the Great American Diner, Rte. 1, Langhorne. June marked the completion of 4 years of ministry at the diner. We have 8 to 12 guys in regular attendance although each week might be made up of a different group of guys. This started as an outreach ministry of LBE/UMM as a way for men to touch base during the week for some mutual encouragement, Scripture reading, devotion and prayer. Guided by the Apostle Paul s tutelage of Timothy to devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture we sought to leave the comfort of our church building so that we could meet more publicly. So in addition to ministering one-toanother we sought to be a public witness; after all, we are members of Langhorne United Methodist Church, A Fellowship of Believers Reaching Out That All May Know Christ as Lord! Over the years we have had many men grace our tables from many different walks of life. Like the movie from which we drew our name, The Breakfast Club, we recall some parts of the movie, mostly things like the juvenile antics of the teenagers, the rough language, the challenges and criticisms they had toward each other. The published plot of the movie was Five high school students, all different stereotypes, meet in detention, where they pour their hearts out to each other, and discover how they have a lot more in common than they thought. This movie plot sounds a lot like what happens around our breakfast table. As we begin our fifth year of ministry at the Great American Diner consider joining us for breakfast and/or reminding the men in your life, regardless of age, to come on out their first breakfast will be on us! 10

MEN S 2013 ANNUAL RETREAT STEPPING UP: A Call To Courageous Manhood NOVEMBER 8-10, 2013 CAMP INNABAH What's the most courageous thing you've ever done? As men, all of us face decisions in life that demand courage. Big or little, complex or straightforward, these choices let's call them battles matter a great deal. One courageous choice leads to another; tomorrow's integrity depends on today's bravery. Dennis Rainey identifies five stages of a man's journey through life boyhood, adolescence, manhood, mentor, and patriarch and examines a man's responsibilities at each step. Rainey calls men to seize the moment and take action, stepping up to responsibility and inspiring others in the process. It's about embracing courage, rejecting passivity and cowardice. Ultimately, you'll be challenged to be the man on your battlefield. Session Titles Surveying the Terrain: Defining Manhood Scaling the Summit: Living Courageously Strengthening the Heart: Building a Life of Faith Showing the Way: Stepping Up to Lead FORMAT: Video Group Individual COST: $120 per person includes 5 meals/lodging Please register by October 1st so workbooks can be ordered in advance of the retreat. Make checks payable to LUMC Men s Ministries TO REGISTER CONTACT: Bill Bryan at bbryan1026@verizon.net/ Be challenged to: Step up to the risks, responsibilities and rewards of authentic manhood; Lead others with courage and compassion; Build a life of vital faith; Turn fear into bravery and regret into victory; and Spend a weekend with other men who share your desire to live right, love well and lead with purpose. It will make a difference. 11

Are your kids ready to Rock the Kingdom? Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Langhorne United Methodist Church travels back in time for Kingdom Rock!, an adventure of epic proportions on July 22nd - 26th 2013, 9 a.m. Noon. At Kingdom Rock, kids learn to Stand Strong for God on a quest to learn about God s Kingdom. Kingdom Rock is a fun place where each day your children will be part of Scripture learning that they can see, hear, touch, and even taste. Crafts, team-building games, lively Bible songs, and spending time with their friends are just a few of the Kingdom Rock activities that help faith flow into real life. The daily bible messages will include: God s love helps us stand strong. I love you, Lord; you are my strength. Prayer helps us stand strong. Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything." Kingdom Rock is great fun for children in current pre-k to 6th grades. So mark your calendar and be sure to join us. Please fill out the registration form online at ez/lumc2013vbs. We are requesting a $25 donation per family, which includes a CD of the spirit-lifting music. Your children will be singing the songs by heart all week! Contact DebbieLetham@gmail.com for more information or call

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS) NEEDS EVERYONE'S HELP! Vacation Bible School (VBS 2013 Kingdom Rock) is coming soon to LUMC the week of July Please pray for us as we prepare to teach our children to Stand Strong for God! We know that our society is not perfect socially or morally. Therefore teaching our children, during VBS, how the strength of God and the Bible enables them to Stand Strong is possibly the most important tool they and we can use to succeed in day-to-day life. A challenge for us this year is not only our limited budget but also that we are not able to borrow the massive decorations from one neighboring church as in recent years, due to the fact that they moved their VBS to the same week as ours. Therefore, we need your help with small and large crafts including the main stage backdrops. We are in need of: name tags, sharpie markers, duct tape (all colors), blu-tak (a sticky claylike wonderful product for hanging items on our concrete walls), castle wall hangings, grey and red plastic tablecloths, colorful streamers/fabric swaths, plastic cups, snack plates, gift cards to hardware, Big Lots, Ollies and dollar stores, knights in suits of shining armor, etc. Stay tuned for food donation requests as well. Please bring them to the collection box in Fellowship Hall. We are appreciative of our church's continued support and appreciate your donations. 13
