You might be wondering, has it ever been okay? I think it depends on how you define the term. Merriam Webster defines a nerd in one of two ways: an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person ; or, one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits. The first definition is not nice at all, especially when you consider that things like style and attractiveness ultimately are in the eye of the beholder. The second definition, one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits, may, I think, actually be a compliment in some circumstances. For example, when someone wants to offer a definitive definition of a word and checks at least ten reliable sources to make sure the information is accurate. As did the present nerdish writer in verifying the meaning of nerd. You may be further impressed by my nerdishness when you discover how much time I spent this past weekend researching different ways to hang up pants. Yes, I thought the time had come to eliminate all mystery and confusion concerning the proper way to hang up pants. My quest for answers began with a decision to finally come to terms with a large box of pants hangers (which we inherited) in our storage room. Pants hangars: as in those special hangars with the two slats that open when the hangar hook is pulled down and pinch together when the hangar hook is pulled upright. What is the proper way to use those things? Are you supposed to insert the pants by the cuffs, by the waist, or folded over in the middle? I had to know, once and for all. After going through twenty or maybe thirty posts and videos (yes, there are numerous videos of people hanging up pants), I determined that it doesn t really matter all that much. What impressed me, though, was how many people are publicly sharing their opinions on how to hang up pants, whether they have a clue or not! We love to share our opinions on anything and everything, don t we? Which is fine, except when our opinions become the standards by which we live. That happens far too in our country these days. Justifiably, we celebrate the right to have opinions and to share those opinions, but we have no right to establish our own truth by way of those opinions. Let us recall the last words in Martin Luther s great hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God: God s truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever. God s truth will abide, no matter what opinions we may offer to the contrary. Let us continue to stand for God s truth and earnestly pray that God s truth will prevail in our land! Pastor Bill

In addition to providing a meal, this event provides a time of fellowship for those who might enjoy a meal with others. September 28, 2:00 pm UMW Meeting Business Meeting Devotions and Refreshments: Anna Stephenson Rummage Sale September 30, 9-5 & October 1, 9-2 At the Shreve United Methodist Activity Center. Sponsored by the UMW, all proceeds go towards Missions. Early Morning Prayer 5:00 6:00 AM WEDNESDAY MORNINGS. Join us for a few minutes or the whole hour. Pray alone or with a group of friends. Pray sitting, kneeling, standing or wandering. Enjoy a slice of quality time with the Lord! Do something God wants our work to be meaningful and satisfying. No matter what we do, it should provide a reason to get up each day and use the talents God has given us. As Benjamin Franklin said, The man who achieves makes many mistakes, but he never makes the biggest mistake of all: doing nothing.

3 Church Family Notes On behalf of the Outreach Office and the Mission Committee, I would like to thank the congregation for the generous donations toward purchasing Bibles. I was able to purchase 50 Adult Bibles and 20 Children's Bibles as well as 10 copies of a devotional and still have funds remaining to replenish the supply when those are gone. Thank you so much for supporting this ministry. Pray that as God's Word goes out, it will touch and transform the lives of those who choose to sincerely seek Him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Shreve United Methodist Church, I would like to thank you for honoring my graduation with the gift of the new Bible. I will be taking it with me to Bowling Green and reading it as often as I can. I am very thankful that this church believes it is important to give new college students a tool to help them grow in their faith. Thank you again for the amazing gift. Supt. Sunday November 20, 2:00 pm, at Shreve United Methodist Church, Church Conference We will be meeting at SUMC for a cluster conference on Nov. 20 with Apple Creek, Dalton, East Greenville, New Pittsburg, North Lawrence Faith, Oak Chapel, Wet Lebanon & Wooster. All members of the church will be voting members, and all Ad. Council members are especially encouraged to attend. Reports will be given and the slate of officers for 2017 will be approved at this meeting. Church Committees will be meeting throughout September and October to prepare reports for the Church Conference. Many of these reports will be presented at our Church Council Meeting on October 18 Helping Hands Will be starting October 3, 12:00 pm in the Old Fellowship Hall

5 Help Support a Seminary Student The Cuba Mission Team is putting together 100 overnight bags for the students who come to the Pinar del Rio Seminary once a month for classes. Many students come to the seminary without personal hygiene items. You can be a blessing to the students by making a contribution to their bag. We would also like to add a personal note of encouragement from you for a student. The Mission Team is collecting the following items for overnight bags: tooth brushes tooth paste hair brushes combs deodorant shampoo Q-tips band aides women s razors men s razors twin sheets small flash lights nail trimmers emery boards mints or gum notes of encouragement Items can be left in the Mission Barrel by Oct. 2, You are welcome to make a cash donation and items will be purchased for you. Fall Rummage Sale Sale Dates: Friday, September pm Saturday, October pm Are you ready for some cooler weather? When you sort through your closet, basement, or storage areas and find items you no longer need, please bring them to the Rummage Sale. Your treasures may be just what someone else needs! You may bring items to the Activity Center starting Monday, September 26th through Thursday, September 29th from 9 am - 4 pm. Also, if anyone can come and help arrange the donations for the sale we would be grateful for your help. Prices will be by donation. All proceeds from the sale go to support mission projects.
