1 Glad Tidings Trinity Episcopal Church Ossining, New York Volume 18 Number 3 March 2019 JESUS PATH OF LOVE, FREEDOM, & ABUNDANT LIFE This Lent, our Presiding Bishop is offering us a glimpse at the spiritual lessons he has learned in life. Through the Forward Movement, we have received a path to follow in this season of Lent which is informed by Bishop Curry s wisdom. Over two Saturdays we will consider Jesus question What do you seek? (John 1:38) Our Presiding Bishop says we seek four things: LOVE: to know God s love, to love and be loved by others, and to love ourselves. FREEDOM: from the forces of sin, fear oppression, and division. ABUNDANT LIFE: which is enough for all and provides love, joy, peace, and delight. JESUS: the way of love Who has power to change lives and the world. As we seek these things, he says, our Christian heritage gives us milestones to touch along the way. For Bishop Curry they are: turning, learning, worshiping, blessing, going, and resting. During our time together on our two quiet (half) days we will hear scripture, consider, and discuss each of these Christian practices. Our purpose? To learn how we can introduce them into our daily lives. You know, every person has a rule of life, that is, certain routines which shape daily life. This Lent, we will seek to add a small number of Christian practices that will focus us on love, freedom, abundant life, and Jesus. Please join me for this meaningful time together. Parts one and two of the quiet day will take place one at each church. These days do not cover the same material. We will explore different spiritual principles each Saturday. PART ONE will be in the Trinity Office from 10: 30 AM to 1:00 PM on SATURDAY, MARCH 30 TH. PART TWO will be in St. Paul s Family Room from 10: 30 AM to 1:00 PM on SATURDAY APRIL 6 TH. You are welcome to either as the Spirit leads but I hope you can make space for both gatherings as part of your own Lenten journey. A light breakfast will be provided. Wear comfortable clothes. Plan to share in the Spirit with your friends. A sign-up sheet will be circulated on Sundays. As Bishop Curry says By entering into reflection, discernment, and commitment around the practices of Turn- Learn- Pray- Worship- Bless- Go- Rest, I pray we will grow as communities following the loving, liberating, life giving way of Jesus [that has the power to] change our lives and the world. 2 ORIANNA CATHERINE PARKER JULY 23, 1919 FEBRUARY 2, 2019 Orianna Catherine Parker passed from this life at 99 years of age in Sleepy Hollow, NY on February 2, The youngest of four sisters, she was born in Summerville, South Carolina to Charles and Sarah Cuttino on July 23, 1919 and moved to Mount Vernon, NY in 1928, where she attended the public schools. In 1942, she married Frederick A. Parker in 1942, shortly before he was assigned to military duty in Europe. Orianna assisted the war effort by working in factories manufacturing war supplies. After the war s end, they settled in Mount Vernon and had three sons: Frederick, Michael, and Dennis. After spending years raising her children, she returned to the workforce as an employee at the Westchester County Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services, where she remained until her retirement. In Mount Vernon, she was an active member of Asbury AME Church. Orianna moved to Ossining in 1999, where she volunteered at the Ossining Food Pantry and attended Trinity Church. She was a fierce competitor in Scrabble and enjoyed music. She was predeceased by her husband Fred, her sisters Frances, Anna, and Florence and is survived by her three sons, grandchildren Kristen, Jonathon, Christian, Andrea, and Zoe and great grandchildren Rebekah, Rachael, and Tessa. 3 FEBRUARY 16, 2019 TRINITY SERVES AT LOAVES AND FISH 49 guests were served pasta and meatballs, salad, rolls and butter, cookies, brownies, and pie. Photos courtesy of Deacon Dorothée DEACON BEACON As Christians we are called to care for the needy, but serving them well requires patience, wisdom, and, most importantly, love. Here at Trinity we have everything we need, and we are called to share out of our abundance with those who have less, especially in our own community. On Saturday, February 16 th, members of Trinity Church gathered in the kitchen and Potter Hall to prepare the dinner and set the table for the Loaves and Fish meal. Over 13 years ago, I started volunteering with Loaves and Fish before I was even ordained! I was so thrilled to return to the program this month and wondered if I would recognize any of the guests. I did not! But there were a few familiar faces from the Emergency Shelter night the month before at St. Paul s on the Hill. One thing that struck me was how many more people come now than 13 years ago I would say it at least double. The best part of the whole night was that the camaraderie was as wonderful as I remember it! I know that the guests that evening had a wonderful meal and the Trinity crew were blessed in the serving. 4 AUDREY KOULOHERIS POWERS AUGUST 19, FEBRUARY 27, 2019 Audrey Kouloheris, 82, died Wednesday, February 27, 2019, in Redwood City, CA after a long battle with Alzheimer s disease. Born in Lafayette, LA, to Chester and Clara (Benton) Rush, she graduated from the University of LA Lafayette. She traveled to Greece and married her long-time pen pal, Anastasios Tas Kouloheris. They lived in Greece for a year before moving back to the U.S. They lived in Chicago and Atlanta, before moving to Brandon, FL in 1968 and resided there for 45 years. After raising her family, she applied her training in psychology as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor and case manager for DACCO. She later served as an advisor to the drug court in Hillsborough County. After retirement, she continued to be active in her church, First Baptist Church of Brandon. She and her Sunday School class volunteered to help residents of local nursing homes with arts and crafts activities. Audrey was a loving and caring person always willing to help neighbors and those less fortunate than herself. She is survived by her children, son Jack Kouloheris, and his husband, Ken Shepard, Ossining, N.Y.; daughter, Annette Kouloheris Baird, Redwood City, CA; sisters-in-law, Magda Apostolidou, Jeanette Rush, and Bonnie Rush; and nieces and nephews Venetia Apostolidou, Akis Apostolidou, Charles Rush, Gina Rush Calogero, James Rush, Jeanette Rush Alford, Robert Rush, Donna Rush Mayeux, David Rush, Lynn Rush Elston, Brian Rush, and Timothy Rush. She was preceded in death by her husbands Anastasios Kouloheris and Harold M. Powers; her brothers, Earl, Warren Pete, and Morris Rush, as well as her sister, Esther Rush Ives. 5 The Sanctuary BUILDING & GROUNDS REPORT In our last report in December, we outlined what we knew about the damaged tile situation at that time. Subsequently, Church Insurance advised us that a remediation company would be vetted by an outside agency and approved by them to do the work; they would also be paid by the insurance company. The first company was rejected because the bid was over-priced. At this writing, the second company s bid has been accepted, but there is 10-day waiting period required by New York State law for all asbestos related jobs and that company is going through the process now. In the meantime, for the replacement part of the project, Warren Dyckman referred us to a local general contractor who is a master builder. His company has extensive experience working with churches and doing restoration work. After receiving permission, he pulled up a section of the damaged tile and plywood to inspect the floor. He assured us that the original hardwood floor is viable and can be restored, but it will not be a quick process. We are very fortunate that he submitted a bid and it was approved by Church Insurance. Because of Lent and Confirmation on March 31 st, the vestry voted to wait until the beginning of April to begin construction, depending on the schedules of the two construction companies. We are tentatively hoping to begin construction during the first week of April when all the key elements are in place. A notice will be sent out to the parish and our community partners as soon as that's confirmed. Leaking Roofs Since December, we ve had leaks from the flat roof over the cloister and from the tower roof in the narthex. Emergency repairs were done on both roofs that have stopped the leaks for now, but extensive work and repointing needs to be done in both sections. 6 It s time for the choir s annual tune-up! Lent is a season of solemnity and penitence. It is a time of renewal. You will notice some musical changes during Lent. The choir will be singing unison plainchant introits, psalms, and service music. Unison singing is at once the most elementary and the most difficult. Performing even the simplest chant with beauty takes practice. Teaching it successfully takes patience and close attention. This genre also demands humility on the part of individual choir members who must sacrifice their vocal distinctiveness to the unified whole. Why bother? When they are sung well, chant and unison song convey intensity and unity unlike any other vocal music. Singing in unison has a philosophical justification. From Dante s Purgatorio to Dietrich Bonhoeffer s Life Together, the unison voice extinguishes wrath and is the audible expression of Christian unity. Chant is the singer s connection to over 2,000 years of Judeo-Christian music. It is the music of worship past, present, and future, creating an unbroken union that knows no limits of time and place. The choir is part of a universe of the faithful that reaches far beyond our own experience. The beauty lies in careful attention to the text, attentive listening by individual singers to ourselves and each other, and a sure and easy command of the melodic line. The words come to the front of the music and of our minds. With sacred texts, that can be a very powerful experience. Many singers are so focused on getting the right notes and staying with their part that they simply chew the text, regardless of the language. The time saved from pounding parts for different sections can be used for teaching about the meaning and history of the text. Unison singing is a golden opportunity for me and the choir to focus on different aspects of singing and choral technique. Breathing, onset, and blending can be easily isolated when all are on the same notes at the same time. A choir that is comfortable singing unison a cappella music is fearless. 11 Lent is now less than one week away and after many discussions with some of our members I have settled on the next two books for TBC from the list which appeared in last month s Glad Tidings. The Last Temptation of Christ, a novel by Nikos Kazantzakis KIRKUS REVIEW: The last temptation is in fact a vision which comes to Christ on the cross in which he sees himself married and as an old man surrounded by a loving family. Traditional Christians may also be disturbed by the characterizations of Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Judas (who is portrayed sympathetically). Tentative TBC date: Sunday, April 28th Educated, a memoir by Tara Westover KIRKUS REVIEW: A recent Cambridge University doctorate debuts with a wrenching account of her childhood and youth in a strict Mormon family in a remote region of Idaho. It s difficult to imagine a young woman who, in her teens, hadn t heard of the World Trade Center, the Holocaust, and virtually everything having to do with arts and popular culture.
