2 Horizons by We re doing our best to stretch out the holiday season for as long as we can, looking forward as we are to the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards and so forth. Any excuse for a party, or so it would seem. How very odd it seems to realize that before this month is out we will have turned the page in the church calendar and again entered into the forty days of the season of Lent. Many of us grew up with the notion (or practice) of giving something up for Lent, much of which seems to target the very same over-indulgences of our holiday season excess in spending, eating, drinking, and all forms of making merry. So you might be surprised by these words on the observance of Lent from the former presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, Frank Griswold: To live in today's world as a faithful person is enough of a discipline. There is no need to take on more. Bishop Griswold s words invite us to understand Lent not as the odd, hair-shirt, fast-forward-through-it season, but rather as the season that invites us simply to be who we are called to be as Christ s disciples day in and day out: wise stewards, generous givers, praying seekers, witnesses to that which gives light and life and hope and true joy. Day in and day out. For these 40 days and for every day. Enter into a faithful Lent. Enter into the life Christ calls you to discover. Taylor Burton-Edwards on the topic of Reclaiming Who You Are: Stepping Out in Faith in Your Ministry as Lay Speakers. Workshops include: ACME Discipling - Developing Accountable, Connected, Missional, Experiental Small Groups, So--what IS a Mission Area? and Living Our Stewardship. A participation fee of $35 includes lunch. For more information, call Thanks On behalf of The Mark Twain Ringers, I wish to send the gratitude of the children, their families and the school staff for the generosity the congregation has shown with the contribution from the Alternative Christmas Program. These funds will go directly to their expenses for their trip to England to perform at the 2012 Summer Olympics. These trips do make a difference in their lives by giving them experiences that show them that, with perseverance and dedication, their goals can be achieved. The congregation, over the years, has shown love and support that makes FUMCSM their favorite place to play. God bless you all for this marvelous gift. Ron Theile, Director Congratulations -Congratulations to Tom & Emily Duff on their recent 60th wedding anniversary and to their grandson Evan Sullivan on the 22nd year of his liver transplant. -Congratulations to Whitney Hagan and Ashley Muncaster, both FUMC youth counselors, who both recently became engaged. Condolences Mission Areas This past Annual Conference our districts became divided up into 'Mission Areas.' Mission areas are clusters of churches within the same geographic region who gather to engage in mission. Our church is a part of the West Mission Area which includes: West LA United Methodist Church, Kardia United Methodist Church, Westwood United Methodist Church, Community United Methodist Church of the Palisades, The Church in Ocean Park, Malibu United Methodist Church, and our Chaplaincy ministries at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. We are beginning to form a vision for what our mission area will focus on as we come together to do God's work in our local community. For more information please contact Rev. Robert English. Standing Together In January, we launched a new project called Standing Together. This is a unique dialogue series for an equal number of participants from FUMC and Muslim brothers and sisters who live on the Westside, chosen by the Islamic Center of Southern California. The group is led by Rev. Patricia Farris, Imam Jihad Turk, and Ms. Inas Youssef. The goals of this exciting 7-part series are to learn about each other s faith, culture, and religious practices, to get to know one another as neighbors and friends, to break down harmful stereotypes that keep us apart, fearful and mistrustful of one another, and to lay the foundations for future projects that we might choose to do together. Participants will learn about interfaith dialogue and etiquette, guidelines for interfaith dialogue, core beliefs and vocabulary of Christianity and Islam, foundational practices of both, and will explore the intersections of faith and culture. We initially asked for ten volunteers from FUMC who were interested in participating. Because quite of few more of you are also interested, we look to the possibility of creating a second follow-up group after this first. In a world rent by conflict and fear, we rejoice in this opportunity to build relationships and create bridges of understanding, respect and love. Please keep the first Standing Together group in your prayers. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of these departed loved ones: -Jennie Weese, who died on January 5. A Memorial Service was held in our Sanctuary on January 14. -Doris Peek, who died on December 31. A Funeral Service was held for Doris in Gates Chapel on January 18. -Gary Leinbach s father Charles Chuck Leinbach. -Charlie Follette s father Dr. James Follette. -Rev. Clarence Crites daughter Erica. -Erma Darling s son Mark. Preschool Story Time Every Thursday the children and teachers in Room S-2 look forward to their weekly visit by Dorothy Shishmanian, Mystery Reader! It's no longer a mystery, for sure, and the children are ready and waiting to be read a special story each week. In the photo you can see that the children celebrated her birthday by presenting her with a Preschool T-shirt. We thank you, Ms. Dorothy! Youth Alive Our Sr. High youth will be attending Youth ALIVE February which is an all-conference youth retreat weekend. Our young people get to have amazing worship experiences, hear from inspired preachers, meet other youth from around our conference and grow in their faith and life with God. It is truly an awesome experience! -Rev. Robert English Flowers At press time, the following dates are available for flowers: February 5, 12, and 19. During Lent, which begins February 22, we observe the austerity and solemnity of the season by not having flowers inside the church. Flowers ordered during Lent will be displayed in the Narthex only. Contact the church office for more information and to dedicate flowers. New Ar t Exhibit in the Fireside Room Beginning February 4, we wil have a new exhibit of photography on display in the Fireside Room by our member (and Jill of all trades) Emily Payne. Emily s love for photography began in high school, starting with black & white 35 mm film, developing her own film and prints. From there, she began adding color to her prints via hand-coloring and tinting. Currently, she shoots full color digital prints. The 18 pieces in this collection come from a variety of inspirations - nature, light and shape: light shining through a leaf, making it translucent, or the cables holding a bridge above a river forming patterns in the sky. All objects, nature or manmade, create the world around us and within that, beauty can always be found. Be sure to stop by and take a look. FUMC Sentinel - February 2012 Page 5

3 2012 Leadership Conference All lay members of the FUMC community are invited to participate in the 2012 Los Angeles District Leadership Conference which will be held here at our church on Saturday, February 4, from 8:30 am - 2 pm. Our own Rev. Patricia Farris and Rev. Camille Mattick are leading workshops as part of the event. The registration fee is $15 and includes breakfast and light lunch. Registration forms are available at the Hospitality Table during Coffee Fellowship on Sundays or in the church office. February Mid-Week Recital Join us for our next Mid-Week Recital on Wednesday, February 8, at 12:10 pm in the Sanctuary. This month Organist/Pianist Christoph Bull and Mezzo-Soprano I-Chin Feinblatt team up for a program of German and French art songs. For information on both artists, please visit and All Mid-Week Recitals are free and open to the public and include a light reception afterwards in the Fireside Room. Don t miss this opportunity to enjoy superb music! February Book Study The book will be The Greatest Prayer: Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message of The Lord s Prayer by John Dominic Crossan and is available for purchase at the Hospitality Table on Sundays or in the church office. I still cherish fond memories of learning the Lord s Prayer from my dad as we would recite it together each night at bedtime. I can still remember working hard to get the phrases in the right order, not yet aware of their meaning, but already sensing their power, assurance, and promise. John Dominic Crossan s newest book adds an adult faith dimension to the prayer we already love. Called the cornerstone of Christian faith, this short prayer sums up the essential beliefs of our Christian faith and practice. This is an exciting and sometimes challenging read. Come explore the meaning and universal significance of the prayer Jesus teaches us disciples to pray. All are welcome to the Book Study and Potluck on Sunday, February 26, at 11:30 am in the Fireside Room. -Rev. Patricia Farris Communications & Social Networking: Take Two Conversation, letter-writing, telephones, answering machines, s, and now social networking Our communication has occurred in many ways in recent years, and it IS causing a rearrangement in our society! Join us for this two-part discussion regarding communication and all the richness it brings to us as individuals and a society, and its most recent style, electronic social networking. In part 1, Jean Young, MA, MFT, A Communications Consultant, will explore with us the styles and subtleties of communication as a framework for looking at some of the newer generations of its implementation. In part 2, Rev. Robert English will continue the dynamic presentation/discussion of social networking which he began with us in More specifics with regard to how to start and how to negotiate these sites, and what exciting benefits they can offer, will be included. Our Health Ministry Council invites you to join the discussion on February 12 from 11:15-1 pm in the Fireside Room. A light lunch will be provided. All ages are welcome. For more details, visit the church website at Wednesday Night Live Is Back! Wednesday Night Live will return on February 29 and run through April 4. Join us each week for a light supper at 6:30 pm followed by discussion with breakout groups (children, youth and adults) around the theme of Creative Theology - Exploring What We Believe based on the work of Dean Philip Clayton, Claremont School of Theology. Child care will be provided. All are invited! LOOKING AHEAD Save the Date! Our UMW Women of Action are once again preparing a wonderful St. Patrick s Day Luncheon. Plan to join us on Sunday, March 11, for food, fellowship and lots of green fun! F U M C S e n t i n e l - F e b r u a r y P a g e 3
