2 CHILDREN S MESSAGE #2233 The Faith We Sing Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Faith in Action project. This week the children will be putting together supplies to create chemo gift bags that will go to children at St. John s who are in the hospital for cancer treatments. These activity bags are helpful to the children and families. As we create these bags of blessing, we talk about how we can share God s love and care with those who are hurting. 5 F O C U S O N February 24, 2019 UPCOMING SEMINAR Perspectives on Common Sense Gun Safety and Reform All are invited to attend this timely 3-part panel discussion, organized by First UMC church member Ken Rasmussen. The program is designed to provide information and different perspectives. Grab your Coffee Hour snacks beforehand and join the discussion in the Fireside Room. There will be a time for questions. Speakers include: Amy Phillips & Stacey Killinger (Moms Demand Action) will give an overview of their organization and speak about their priorities on the state and national level. Karl Richter (Be Smart) will discuss a program that teaches safe ownership and storage of firearms to reduce teen and child suicide and unintentional shootings. First UMC volunteers engage in activities that create lasting impact and joy. Here at First UMC, we offer two Ash Wednesday services in the Chapel. The ashes used for the services come from the burned palms of last year s Palm Sunday Service. First UMC member Whitney Hagan leads DanceFit: DanceFit is inspired by Zumba, a high-energy interval workout set to upbeat music, featuring choreographed dance tailored for fitness. Saturday, March 9, 4:30-6 p.m. in the Chapel/ Simkins Hall Lenten Yoga Series In this coming season of spiritual dedication, Open Space will be inviting people of all ages to add the spiritual discipline of yoga to your Lenten practice. Led by Kristia Oney, the series will incorporate gentle, restorative, and energizing physical movement (with modifications for all mobility and flexibility levels) along with guidance through scripture, connecting body, mind, and spirit to help us settle into this season with intention. Beginning Wednesday March 13, 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room Haiti Work Team Update - Haiti Service Trip Postponed It is with great disappointment that we will be indefinitely postponing the Haiti service trip. Based on advisories from the US State Department, news reports, and conversations with people on the ground in Haiti, we have concluded that travel would be unsafe at this time. Additionally, our ability to complete our mission of serving the village of Sobier would be greatly diminished by current events; in fact, our presence might even be more harmful than helpful. We are committed to exploring other options as we continue to find ways to support our brothers and sisters in Haiti. At this time, we d like everyone to continue to pray for the country and people of Haiti, along with the missionaries who are there now as they return to the States. In the meantime, we will continue to raise money for Pennies for Haiti. The Haitian people need our help now more than ever, and we want them to know that we have not abandoned them, but are continuing our commitment to help them, even as the mode of that help changes. At the Haiti Fundraiser at the Santa Monica Moose Lodge, First UMC raised enough money for thirteen goats that will go directly to the Haitian families in most need. Mission is not merely something we do; it is also who we are as a Christian people. It is an attitude that we bring to the world as an outpouring of the grace of God within us as the Body of Christ. We pray that we all carry this stirring of the spirit into our daily lives, our workplaces, and our relationships. -

8 MISSION OPPORTUNITIES Westside Food Bank Food is collected every Sunday to benefit the Westside Food Bank. Food bins can be found outside the Sanctuary and in the Preschool. For the month of February we are collecting canned tuna. UMCOR The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the humanitarian relief and development arm of The United Methodist Church (UMC), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization operated under the auspices of the General Board of Global Ministries. When UMCOR donors designate their contribution for a particular program or disaster response, UMCOR uses 100 percent of it on that program none of it gets funneled back into fundraising or operating costs. This service is available to anyone in the congregation, not just those who are homebound or in a care facility long-term; anyone who is laid up and unable to come for any reason is welcome to join us this way. If you are interested in becoming a communion server, please contact one of the clergy or the church office. Health Ministry Council Through God s love, the Health Ministry Council works to promote wellness in individuals, the church, and the community. The council supports the mission of First UMC, plans and implements programs and activities that promote physical, mental and spiritual well-being and healing, and serves as an advocate for health and safety concerns.
