1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH of SANTA MONICA SENTINEL vol. cxlii, no. 2 February 2017 HORIZONS HAITI 2017 At our January meeting, each member of our Church Council shared a First UMC highlight from 2016 and a dream/hope for As you might expect, the portrait of a strong, vibrant, faithful, healthy, missional community emerged. From different moments and differing examples, here are some common themes: The life-giving and life-sustaining relationships in this community of faith that include all ages, endure over time, yet are still evident to people walking through the door for the first time. We save more lives than we know, one observed. An ever-deepening faith and spirituality, finding expression in our Advent/Lenten devotionals, in all our various opportunities for worship, in ministries with children, youth, and families, in thrilling moments when music brings us to tears, Faithful community interaction through the Haiti Work Team, the Youth Service Project, Community Meals, the Thanksgiving Meal when we move beyond giving to or providing for into new relationships with neighbors near and far that change our minds and our hearts, Growing desire to reach out, share our story, and invite people into this life together of faithfulness, service, joy, and love which maybe they never imagined church could be. I m talking to people about church much more than I ever have, one shared. What an exciting and wonderful year 2017 promises to be! Senior Minister In 2010, a devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake crippled the impoverished country of Haiti. As we witnessed the devastation of the earthquake, our congregation heard a call to be in an ongoing mission partnership with the Haitian people. Since then we have sent a team annually from our church to be in service to a Haitian community. This last fall the country was devastated by Hurricane Matthew. Haiti remains the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Many live without clean water or adequate sanitation. They still need our help. First UMC is sending 10 volunteers to Haiti from March The team is comprised of: Jason Beckerman, Bonnie Bennetts, Shalimar Carducci, Jan Hanley, Jim Kirtley, Dan Nessel, Greg Moul, John Pfister, Leaders: Todd & Sherry Erlandson. Joining with Église Methodiste d Haiti (United Methodist Church of Haiti), we will be lending our time, talent, and faith to help our Haitian brothers and sisters by building and strengthening sustainable communities. We anticipate working with a Haitian work team to build a clinic for a village named Sobiér. To support the Haiti Work Team, go to: santamonicaumc.org/haiti, or make checks to First UMC with Haiti Mission Team on the memo line. All proceeds directly benefit Haiti. Also, start saving your pennies now for the Haiti Work Team s Pennies for Haiti after worship February 12, 19 and 26. The work team will be commissioned during worship February 26. 5 Thank You from Rev. Patricia Farris I want to express heartfelt thanks and gratitude to our youth for choosing the E-Readers project for Cakes for a Cause at our Charge Conference in November. Thanks to your support of their hard work, and individual gifts that came in, we raised $2,000 which will purchase TWENTY E-Readers. WOW! This far surpasses our goal of $650 to celebrate my 65th birthday. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The E-Readers for Theological Education initiative is a partnership with United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry and UM Discipleship Ministries and is committed to providing e-libraries on e-readers with important theological texts to the libraries of United Methodist-related and sponsored theological schools in Africa and the Philippines. E-readers in schools has proven to be an effective way to help theology schools in remote areas have access to current textbooks and reference books. An 18-month pilot project ( ) at Gbarnga School of Theology in Liberia proved that the e-reader is affordable, easy to use, and capable of holding a charge for weeks at a time. Faculty gained access to current theological publications and research. Students gained access to reference books and textbooks related to their three-year curriculum, Bibles, dictionaries, and even cultural readings related to and authored in Africa. Students and faculty celebrated the simplicity of carrying their entire library to class, home, and church. Our Sanctuary: Symbols of Hope by Ron Theile As a member of this congregation and of the Chancel Choir, I often find myself gazing upon our beautiful sanctuary. There are times I look out from the choir loft to witness those who are worshipping doing the same. It could be while we are preparing for worship, praying, listening to scripture or being moved by the music of worship. This series will help to guide us as we look at, and think about, the many sights and symbols that surround us as we worship. They are all symbols of hope, so that we will all be inspired to be the hope. Ron Theile Part 12: This month we progress along the north wall of the Grand Gallery to the window, with stunning blue color, called the Baptism of Christ. This beautiful stained glass was dedicated on Sunday, April 17, This is the third window that was given by John W. Fisher. In the window, John the Baptist is holding an escallop shell with drops of water. The descending Dove, the Holy Spirit, descends upon Christ. The anchor in this window represents salvation. The baptismal fount and the three escallop shells represent the baptism ritual. Since that beginning test project, E-readers have been taken to twelve additional schools, including French- and Portuguese-speaking schools, accompanied by training for faculty and students. Students at all schools have the possibility of taking an e-reader with them into ministry upon graduation. In 2016, the E-Reader Project distributed nearly 1,500 devices to 22 theological seminaries in Asia and Africa, loaded with publications in English, French, and Portuguese. Funding for the E-Reader Project comes from annual conferences, local churches, individual donors, universities and a student fee each semester, which helps offset the price of the E-Reader and content. One hundred percent of the funds raised is used entirely for the acquisition and distribution of e-readers and e-books while the two general agencies cover the costs of staff, training, and travel. To learn more or donate online, visit www. umcereader.org. Standing hand-in-hand with our brothers and sisters in Christ around the globe, we are helping to nurture new generations of leaders. Never say it can t be done. Be the hope! Rev. Patricia Farris It is interesting to note that I believe our window, if my research was thorough enough, is an original. Even in this, what would be considered a modern window, the artist continues the use of icons. They carry forward these icons that were used in the early churches so that the illiterate of the masses could recognize, not only the main figures in the window, but also get a sense of their purpose and character. We are a congregation who believes in hope. Hope in God s promise, hope delivered in the messages of Jesus, and hope that we can carry His message to others. Our window represents our practice of baptizing all into our Christian family. It also represents hope that our mission for Christ is perpetual through the act of baptizing people of all ages to carry on that mission long after we enter into the Kingdom of God. These are symbols of hope so that we can be the hope.
