1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH of SANTA MONICA SENTINEL vol. cxli, no. 6 June/July 2016 HORIZONS by Tricia Lindley, Director of Children and Youth Ministry The children and youth at First United Methodist Church are an important part of the life of our church community. Our children and youth help us to know a part of God that we can t know without their presence and insight. Through their joy, their silliness, their vulnerability, their struggles and their questions, they inspire us all in their faith and discipleship of Jesus Christ. On June 5, you will have the opportunity to be led in worship by our children with a Children s Sabbath. They have studied, prayed together and worked hard to prepare for this service. They are excited to share the good news of God s love for all of God s children through the theme: Blessed to be a Blessing. First UMC Youth Mission Statement: The youth program at First UMC is a safe, Christ-centered environment where youth can gain tools to help them explore and grow in their faith. Activities are designed to nurture relationships and build a strong, loving community. This is a place of acceptance, outreach and spirituality. This mission statement for our youth group is a guide for how they seek to be faithful, to be part of the church community, to be the hope and prayer lived out in the world. Their commitment and passion for building a community built on love is reflected in the ways you see them participate in this church community. This summer the high school youth will travel to Smith River in northern California. During a week with the Sierra Service Project, our group will join with other youth around the U.S. to repair homes and work in communities for those in need while growing in their own faith and relationship with God. Let us give thanks for the children and youth in our church who remind us that we are children of God, loved more than we can know and called to extend that love in all the ways we can and with all of those we meet! Saturday June 11/ July 9 (no August gathering) 4-6 p.m. Chapel and Simkins Hall simple church Summer Update by Rev. Robert English simple church will not be gathering for worship during the summer (July and August). During this time I will be planning and preparing for the fall when we will relaunch simple church as a weekly worship on Sunday evenings at 5 p.m. This is what we call a hard launch in church planning language. It has been an amazing journey thus far in growing closer to God as we cultivate calm, centered and compassionate lives as a community following a simple rule of life. It is my prayer that as we look toward the fall we can continue to carry this message out to those in our community who are seeking spiritual community and longing to live a more simple and peaceful life in God s grace. Over the summer we will continue our Community Meal with the families of Family Place, and Sacred Yoga once a month. We will also be gathering for fellowship and community so be sure to look out for simple church s over the coming weeks. 4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone at the Hollywood Bowl Our Sanctuary: Symbols of Hope by Ron Theile As a member of this congregation and of the Chancel Choir, I often find myself gazing upon our beautiful sanctuary. There are times I look out from the choir loft to witness those who are worshipping doing the same. It could be while we are preparing for worship, praying, listening to scripture or being moved by the music of worship. This series will help to guide us as we look at, and think about, the many sights and symbols that surround us as we worship. They are all symbols of hope, so that we will all be inspired to be the hope. - Ron Theile Part 5: Memorial Music Windows Medallions It is appropriate to present these windows, located high on the north wall of the chancel, following Choir Recognition Sunday. These medallions, dedicated December 28, 1958, are made up of multiple instruments and music notations of an orchestra with the collection being centered by the image of Charles Wesley. The instruments and music notations include the treble clef, trombone, mandolin, drum, trumpet, bass clef, lyre, drums, organ, violin, French horn, saxophone, tambourine, and the harp. Below the centered image of Charles Wesley is a window presenting the title of one of his most famous hymns, O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing. Charles Wesley ( ) was the eighteenth child of Samuel and Susannah Wesley s nineteen children (only 10 lived to maturity). He was the brother of John Wesley ( ) who is considered the organizational genius behind James He Qi in the Fireside Room On Sunday May 22 after worship in the Fireside Room, artist James He Qi (pronounced Chi ) gave a moving account of his artwork and life. He described growing up during the Cultural Revolution in China and the path that led to his becoming an artist. He explained that his primary goal as a Christian artist is to reflect peace and hope in his work. James is currently an artist-in-residence at Claremont School of Theology for a 2-year stay. He has exhibited extensively world-wide. We thank James for the opportunity to display his beautiful works of art here on campus. the founding of Methodism. Both were ordained ministers. Charles wrote more than 6,500 hymns, 10 times the volume composed by the only other candidate (Isaac Watts) who could conceivably claim to be the world s greatest hymn writer. Charles hymns were statements of praise that were meant to lift the spirit of those who sang them. His first hymn, probably And Can It Be? was written in the summer of It is a powerful, wondrous rejoicing in the freedom to be found in Christ: Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature s night; Thine eye diffused the quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. Our windows that rise above the chancel in our sanctuary represent the instruments that lift our spirits. The image of Charles Wesley represents the voices that sing praises to God and fill us with hope that, as Charles wrote, the light is always shining to guide our way. These windows are symbols of hope, so that we can be the hope. Join First UMC s Children and Family Ministries outing to the Hollywood Bowl to see Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone. First UMC / Hollywood Bowl: Wednesday July 6, 8 p.m. Western Jurisdiction Conference In the United States, The United Methodist Church is divided into five areas known as jurisdictions: Northeastern, Southeastern, North Central, South Central and Western. These provide some program and leadership training events to support the annual conferences. Every four years the jurisdictional conferences meet to elect new bishops and select members of general boards and agencies. The Western Jurisdiction is a large and diverse region of the UMC, stretching from the eastern edge of Colorado to the islands of Hawaii, Guam, and Saipan in the West, and from northern-most Alaska to Arizona in the South. We are blessed with people of many ethnic and cultural heritages, and seek to live out our vision, to be A home for all God s people, gathered around a table of reconciliation and transformation. As a multicultural and inclusive Jurisdiction, we seek to be engaged in the life of our communities, with confident, effective lay and clergy leadership forming disciples who live out the good news of Jesus as global citizens. We will meet July in Scottsdale, Arizona. Rev. Patricia Farris is a delegate. 34th Annual UMC Dodgers Family Night Youth Service Project: New Orleans Each year, First UMC sends a Youth Service Project team for one week to travel and engage in service and mission with struggling communities around the United States.
