4 SErVICE OF CONFIRMATION May 17, 2015 Confirmands respond with words in bold italics. Congregation responds with words in bold type. INTRODUCTION Rev. Robert English Friends in Christ, we are all received into the church of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of baptism. These persons have found nurture and support in the midst of this family of Christ. Through prayer and study, one comes before this congregation for baptism. Five come before us to reaffirm the covenants made at their baptism. They all stand before this congregation to claim in our presence their relationship with Christ and with the members of the church. They are here for service to Jesus Christ, to utilize the gifts that the Holy Spirit has bestowed upon each of them. With them, we hear today the words of the prophet Micah: God has told you what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with you God? May God cause us all this day to renew our commitments to God in Christ. PRESENTATION TO THOSE BEING CONFIRMED Do you desire to affirm your baptism into the faith and family of Jesus Christ? I do. Do you profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior? I do. Do you promise, by the grace of God, to be Christ s disciple, to follow in the way of our Savior, to resist oppression and evil, to show love and justice, and to witness to the work and word of Jesus Christ as best as you are able? I promise, with the help of God. Do you promise, according to the grace given you, to grow in the Christian faith and to be a faithful member of the church of Jesus Christ, celebrating Christ s presence and furthering Christ s mission in all the world? I promise, with the help of God. O God, known to me in Jesus Christ, I give myself to you as your own, to love and serve you faithfully all the days of my life. Amen. CONFIRMATION Rev. Farris O God, in the grace of Jesus Christ you have accepted this your servant (Name) through the water of baptism. Nourish in him/her the power of your Holy Spirit that he/she may serve you in the world. Amen. (over)

5 PRAYER OF THE CONGREGATION Rev. English Almighty God, who in baptism received these your servants into the church, forgave their sins, and promised them eternal life, increase in them the gifts of your Holy Spirit. Grant love for others, joy in serving you, peace in disagreement, patience in suffering, kindness toward all people, goodness in evil times, faithfulness in temptation, gentleness in the face of opposition. Thereby strengthen them for their ministry in the world; through Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray: The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. WELCOME Michael Lamb, Lay Leader TO THOSE BEING CONFIRMED Do you promise to participate in the life and mission of this family of God s people, sharing regularly in the worship of God, and enlisting in the work of the local church as it serves this community of the world, through your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness? I do. TO THE CONGREGATION Members of the household of God, I commend these people to your love and care. Do all in your power to increase their faith, confirm their hope, and perfect them in love. We give thanks for all that God has already given you and we welcome you in Christian love. As members together with you in the body of Christ and in this congregation of the United Methodist Church, we renew our covenant to participate faithfully in the ministries of the Church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.
