1 Church Music Notes J U L Y/AU G U ST Congratulations to our new ACM Board Members Thank you to the 2012 Nominating Committee, Lyn Lemberger, Alex Gillespie and Bruce Bengtson, for their work in finding excellent candidates for open positions on the ACM Board. Here are the names of those who were elected to the ACM Board for the year 2012/2013, or are continuing in their terms. We are indeed grateful for their willingness to give of their time and talents to ACM. Come meet other church musicians and organists at a picnic in Wingra Park in Madison. Bring a dish to pass for a potluck. Friday, October 5, 7:30pm, Covenant Presbyterian Church Member recital to benefit the Ruth Pilger Andrews Scholarship Fund. Saturday, January 5, late afternoon or evening Twelfth Night Hymn Sing hosted by AGO member and UW Professor John Chappell Stowe. Monday, January 21, 9:00am noon, with lunch to follow Improvisation workshop given by Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, St. Andrew s Episcopal Church.

2 Upcoming Events Come to the annual July 4 Patriotic Concert, America in Classical and Pops, featuring the Sinsinawa Strings Orchestra at 2:00pm. The orchestra will play beloved classical pieces, familiar pops tunes, and rousing marches. The Honor Guard will present the flags, with a special tribute to the Guatemalan flag that honors the 13 years Sinsinawa Dominicans ministered there. A free-will offering will be accepted. For more information on these and other activities at the Mound, including the Summer Organ Concert Series, call (608) or go to their website at Tuesday, July 10, 7:00pm: Musician Michael W. Hillestad to offer an free organ recital at Pres House. This light and exciting recital entitled American Song Book will feature a salute to our branches of Military, transcriptions of marches by Sousa, works by American composers Scott Joplin and George Gershwin plus others. This recital is free and open to everyone. The Lake Street parking ramp offers the closest parking. For more information, see their website: Saturday, July 21, 11:00am, Jared Stellmacher and the Gargoyle Brass Quintet will present the second of three Free Farmers Market Concerts in Overture Hall, Madison, on the Overture Concert Organ. Sunday, July 29 at 7:00pm, Christopher Houlihan, guest organist, at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church, Hwy. 42, Ellison Bay, WI, on the congregation's Dobson organ. Acknowledged as one of the brightest stars in the new generation of American organists, Christopher Houlihan enters his second season under profession concert management, performing widely in the U.S. and abroad. A free-will offering will be received; a reception will follow the concert. For more information phone (920) Saturday, August 18, 11:00am, Kathrine Hanford of Lawrence University will present the third of three Free Farmers Market Concerts in Overture Hall, Madison, on the Overture Concert Organ. Update from the Scholarship Committee The Scholarship Committee continues researching investment options for the Ruth Pilger Andrews funds. If you have any suggestions for the committee, please contact us. Our goal is to decide how to invest these funds by late summer. Last month, we included a scholarship application in the newsletter. A copy of the application is also available on the ACM website ( Please encourage anyone interested in pursuing organ studies to apply. Be sure to mark your calendar for an ACM Member Recital October 5, 2012, at 7:30pm. Covenant Presbyterian Church (326 S. Segoe Rd, Madison) will be hosting the event. Proceeds from the recital will be donated to the scholarship fund. Guest organists from around the United States and Prague, Czech Republic, will play the Casavant Opus 2847 in the Queen of the Rosary Chapel. The concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, call (608) or go to their website at Wednesday, July 4, 7:00pm, Jane Kriel Horn and Joan DeVee Dixon will be the soloists for this week s Summer Organ Concert series recital at Sinsinawa Mound, playing music for organ, four hands and four feet! The program includes Bach for the 4th of July, Scott Joplin rags, spirituals, polkas, marches, 1812 Overture, and other audience favorites. Dixon has performed throughout Europe and the United States as well as in Japan and Palestine. She is chair of the music department at Frostburg (MD) State University. Kriel Horn is the Worship & Arts Minister at St. Michael Lutheran Church, Bloomington. She is a graduate of Concordia University, St. Paul, MN, where she studied with Dr. Paul Manz, and worked as his assistant. Wednesday, July 11, 7:00pm, Bruce Bengtson will be the soloist for this week s Summer Organ Concert series at Sinsinawa Mound. He is director of music at Luther Memorial Church, Madison, WI, and plays a weekly noon-time concert during the nearby University of Wisconsin's academic year. Bengtson has performed in Mexico, Canada, much of Europe, and the United States. His teachers include Robert Anderson of Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, and Philip Gehring of Valparaiso University. Wednesday, July 18, 7:00pm, Kirstin Synnestvedt will be the soloist for this week s Summer Organ Concert series at Sinsinawa Mound. She studied music at the Juilliard School in New York City; Syracuse University and the University of Iowa. Synnestvedt's organ teachers included Vernon de Tar, Arthur Poister and Gerhard Krapf. She currently resides in Chicago where she teaches piano, organ, and voice privately and also serves as assistant organist and choirmaster at Christ Episcopal Church, Winnetka, IL. Wednesday, July 25, 7:00pm, Mark McClellan of Iowa Falls will be the soloist for this week s Summer Organ Concert series at Sinsinawa Mound. will perform July 25. He has given recitals throughout the United States, Israel, Germany, Canada, Italy, and France and is an enthusiast and philanthropist of the organ involved in the promotion and sponsorship of U.S. tours of European organists. McClellan s teachers include Eva J. Wisner, Rev. Paul Peters, Robert Triplett, and Carl Staplin at Drake University. Members and guests gathered at Bushel and Peck's Restaurant in Beloit, WI. for a lunch break from an extensive organ crawl planned by Max Yount. We first enjoyed Turkey Noodle or Cream of Asparagus Soup. Our second choice on the menu was one of the following: 1. Asparagus &Portabella Cavitappi with Sage Brown Butter 2. Pan Seared Salmon with Lentils & Mustard Glaze 3. Classic Wisconsin Fish & chips OR 4. Steak & Blue cheese Salad. Our Dessert of Assorted cookies came on two huge plates! Near the beginning of our feast, we paused for a brief annual meeting. At 12:42 pm, ACM President Bruce Bengtson called the meeting to order with a firm knuckle rap on the table and a warm welcome. Usually we vote in new officers, however the Nominations Committee just completed the finding of all officers yesterday. There is a 30 day window from the time of notifying the members of an election till a vote may be taken - just in case people have second thoughts. Bruce missed being Vice-President and was drafted into service as President with the unexpected loss of Chuck Thomley. John Krueger moved to approve the 2011 Annual Meeting Minutes, Penny Jacobsen, Second. Motion passed. Julie Shipe Mc Clain gave an update on the Scholarship Committee. The proposed slate of Candidates was presented for ACM s program year: (A 30 day notice will go out to members and an e-vote will be set up by Deborah Krauss Smith.) Dean Gardner - Board Member-at Large (2015) Not up for election - but currently serving on ACM Executive Board John Rafoth - Board Member-at Large (2013) Bruce Bengtson - Past President The following Courtesy motions were expressed: Thanks to Alex Gillespie and Lynn Lemberger for their work on the Nominations Committee Bruce expressed a word of thanks to all who served on the board especially Max Yount for his years of service as a Board Member-at-Large and for willing to serve again if candidates were not found. Also thanks to Ann U. Herr for her 8 years as secretary and a year or two as a Board Member-at-Large. Highlights of the year noted by Bruce included the informative January meeting with Linda Warren and Deb Krauss Smith, the Nathan Laube concert and for Sigrun Franzen's work on the program year. John Krueger expressed his thanks to Bruce for stepping in and bringing his grace to all of us. Motion to adjourn at 2:51 pm., Ellen P. Westlund, second Mark Brampton Smith.
