3 ^ Editorial Page 4 THE NEWS Friday. October Salute to the American Legion Like a giant waking rom a sleep, The American Legion is rousing itsel rom coast to coast to stretch its dimensions or From Caliornia to Maine reports indicate a new enthusiasm or expanding American Legion membership during the next year with the hardest-hitting enrollment campaign in all its 39 year history aimed 'at 22,000,000 eligible veterans. For 1958 The American Legion has come up with some remarkable vigorous and high-caliber youthul leadership in its new state commanders. Many o them "are a exceptional ability. It is relected in agressive vision, planning, organization and accenting the community services o local American Legion Posts. The American Legion has also come up with a modernistic new membership tool. "There's No Utter In Florida" rom Charleston (S.C., Evening Post o August 13, 1957 A week's sightseeing trip through Florida leaves one with many impressions. Last week I took such a trip and gained a number o impressions - - one o the most lasting being the cleanliness and. beauty o Florida's highways. A tourist entering the Sunshine State is inormed early by highway signs that "litterbugging" is rowned on and that persons caught throwing trash along the highways may be ined as much as $ Obviously a traveler could throw trash all up and down the highways without being caught - - but they don't. I rode hundreds o miles in and around Florida, rom one side to the other, and I never saw an unkept highway. On the main highways, large trash containers are placed along the shoulders at intervals o about ive miles. It is a simple matter just to pull o the highway and dump trash into the big cans. Throughout our whole adventure all six o us (our children) scrupulously obeyed Florida's anti-litter law. The children wouldn't even loss a chewing-gum wrapper out o the car window. A amily traveling is bound to accumulate trash. We ound it convenient enough to keep a paper bag in the car to deposit our trash in. When the bag got ull, or we made a convenient stop, we got rid o it. "Why don't we just throw it out o the vindow?" one o the younger children askj the irst day o the trip. 4-H dub The 7th arid 8th grade ( have organized, under the direction o Mrs. Elizabeth Pierce, a 4-H club. They have named it the Happy Hustlers and the oicers are as ollows: Bonnie Eshelman, president; Janet Baker, vice-president; Tomolyn Tarayos, secretary and Guest Editorial treasurer; Joanna Brown- Council delegate; Janet Noel is song leader, and Karen Houseman, reporters The Happy Hustlers have received bookies on their irst 4-H project which will be ood and nutrition. Support o it by advertising and contributions o news copy will help the paper gxow, which in turn will help the coonn unity grow. It is a 16-page booklet telling thej story o The American Legion in the popular cartoon sketch technique with the impact o color and drama. The American Legion is planning on mass distributions o this new "comic book", entitled "Saved by the Belli" to all eligible veterans tied in with a ollow-up by membership workers. Most big business organizations are now using this technique to tell their stories to the people. There is evidence also o a new spirit among local Legionaires in their 1958 planning activities. We wish the American Legion well. We know that a bigger and better American Legion will be an asset to every community, to every state and to the Nation. We need the spirit o the dynamic conviction o Americanism which is the earmark o The American Legion everywhere! "By George," I said, puing up with a tourist pride, "i nobody else is going to throw trash on the highways in Florida, then no member o my amly is." That was an order, and it took better than most o my orders do. It wasn't the prospect o getting arrested or ined that stayed trash-throwing hands. We drove many miles wihout seeing another car, much less a highway patrolman. We could have lung out the car window all over the place without being caught. But it is contrary to human nature. I think, to litter up a place which is unlittered. Had there been trash on the roads I expect we would have added to it without so much as a thought, Most o us, I think, have the impression that the average tourist is a ellow with a pocket ull o money bent on seeing all the sights and caring not a whit about how he leaves things or those who ollow. But tourists in Florida care a great deal about keeping the highways clean. They do it. The presence o trash containers along the highways must be the secret. No use putting up signs about litterbugging unless conainers are strategically placed or use o people bearing litter. They'll tote it or awhile, but sooner or later they'll throw it out the window i they don't ind a tetter place to put it. South Carolina's Highway department could well emulate what Florida has done in this respect. It's amazing what an impression cleanliness makes on the traveler R. M. H. Jr. Bobcats, rah, rah, rah," rocked the gym as the new cheer leaders were chosen, or this year. The lucky three in the 7th grade are Carolyn Baker, Dana Mucci and Judy Shryock. They are writing health rules and drawing pictures to illustrate them. Through My Window By Beatrice Landry "Way back when," some people believed the world was lat I you went to the end, you'd all o. Where you'd all I don't know. Probably into the arms o Atlas. At times geography was usually based on supposition, Bibical lore,'legends, etc., and one popular belie was that giant sea serpents inested the outer oceans. Also that the water along the equator oten boiled. One man who did not believe these things was Christopher Columbus whose "day" is honored tomorrow. Sure that he could reach the East Indies by going westward and increase the supplies o spices, etc., he set sail. The act that Columbus discovered the West Indies does not lessen his courage.. Imagine three small ships amidst all kinds or storms, sailors terriied almost to the point o mutiny, alicted with scurvy and sailing on into the unknown, pressed ever onward by a gallant captain who was sure the world was a sphere. Turned down by Portugal, Columbus inally made his historic voyage because Queen Isabella, o Spain, made the inancing possible. The world's horizon was expanded and the progress o history stimulated. Legally recognized every where but Virginia, Tennessee, Wyoming, North and South Carolina, D. C, Arkansas Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Mississippi, Oregon and Puerto Rico, it is a day o iesta or many Latin American Countries. -o- -o- -o- Memo to local bowlers, both gals and men. Real cool, too, and you can eat when you work up that appetite on the many alleys at the Pompano Lanes. Even have a "crying room," (though they call it a conerence room) where you can explain why you were a "little o your average" this time. Sure going to be nice to be able to go bowling nearby and in such a nice place. -o- -o- Am just waiting to- see Boca's Dram, Bugle and Cadet Corps marching down one o c^ur streets.
