Their Green Mountain uniforms attracted much approving attention among Congress goers. A rev war researcher commented on the authenticity of the Green Mountain uniforms. In the Memorial Service procession at the Perkins Chapel of Southern Methodist Universitythe state flags were duly carried in the order of the achievement of statehood. Sgt. Colby carried the Green Mountain flag. Compatriot Fallon carried the Vermont flag, marching side by side in the 14th place. The VTSSAR Color Guard also processed at the opening ceremonies and at the PG and Mrs. Roland Downing gala. VTSSAR President Arnold E. Fallon, Jr. and his lovely wife Becky represented the Vermont Society at the 116th National Congress of the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution. Over four hundred compatriots and their guests converged upon the Hotel Intercontinental Dallas, located in Addison, Texas for this momen- tous week of meetings, voting, activities, and fun. David Hockensmith. This warmly received event was held in the Waterford Room of the Hotel Intercontinental Dallas. The room, with its pale rose walls and attractive gas-style lamps at the tables, gave the room a New England feel. Sergeant Colby installed the Bennington and Green Mountain flags about the room. A table with Vermont stickers, a Vermont Society photo album, and other Vermont items, shouted Vermont and thus presented a suitable and fitting backdrop for this time of honoring our Vermont Society brother, Rev. David Hockensmith. The reception was held on Monday July 10th at 4:30 pm. Compatriots and their wives from throughout the country filled the room, appreciating the opportunity to share in (continued on P. 5)

4 P a g e 4 T h e V e r m o n t P a t r i o t P O O L, B A R B E C U E, & R O D E O Becky and I arrived for Congress on Friday July 7th. We flew from Albany, New York to Dallas with a switch in Philadelphia. The first order of recreational business was to get to the pool. The sun was Texas hot but nothing the pool couldnt tame. We then dressed in our western best and boarded the buses for the town of Mesquite, Texas, home of the Mesquite Rodeo. We dined near the air conditioned indoor rodeo arena having a very tender pork barbecue and sausage that was more like steak seemingly no fat. The western beans were in an interesting barbecue hot sauce nothing like Ive ever hadso good and the beans served al dente. Honest potato salad and nourishing cole slaw were just plain GOOD! Unbeatable peach cobbler for dessert. Shored up with the mighty barbecueit was time to take our seats. The Mesquite Rodeo is a big time rodeo and it lived up to its reputation. It had everything you would expect from a rodeo and more! A bull and horse walked up a ramp to the top of a huge vehicle and did a series of incredible stances! Bull riding.barrel Racing! Wrangling! WOW! Center for Advancing Americas Heritage Mr. Dollar Campaign A dollar will be collected from each compatriot at each meeting for the coming year. We will send VTSSAR donation to National for this vital endeavor. An advance program for the memorial indicates:...the ship was ordered back to sea to escort the monitor Wyoming, which had broken down, to Port Harford. Having completed the dirty job of coaling, the ship was raising steam to depart San Diego on Friday, July 21 and at 10:38 am, an explosion occurred in the port fire-room. The ship shook violently for several seconds, and then large volumes of steam and ashes filled most of the living compartments and deck spaces. Sixty-two sailors perished Sgt.
