The Most Precious Gift John 3:16 April 10, 2016 We are in a new series - Going Deeper in Faith. Throughout this series we will explore the foundational beliefs we share together as followers of Jesus Christ. The series will focus on 13 core values we believe as a church. Last week, Pastor Doug kicked-off the series with our focus on God. I realize many of you may have been gone last week due to snow, wind, sleet, and rain. If the weather scared you away, I encourage you to go back and listen to it. The focus was on What is God like? Doug, shared with us Psalm 145:8. I just want to read it to you The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Doug described God as a loving God. God has a desire what is best for us. We learned that God is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and has steadfast love for each of us. This morning we are going to be seeing God in a loving way towards us. Before we begin, I want you to think about a favorite present you received as a child, a young teenager, or as a young adult. I want you to think of a present that someone gave you. You know the present was special because the person who gave it put a lot of thought, a lot of care, and invested time into picking out the right gift. STORY: I grew up in a small town in northern Wisconsin some 1,300 hundred miles away from Cape Cod. I want to tell you that Wisconsin is a very different culture than Cape Cod in many aspects. I can remember when I was 12 years old and it was Christmas time. My family was at my grandparents house along with all my uncles, aunts, and cousins. My dad s side had a huge family. There was always over 30 to 40 people attending Christmas. The tradition was always the same. Families would arrive in the morning, dinner at noon, presents around 2 p.m. and then games and fun with my cousins the rest of the day and evening. As a kid, I loved Christmas because I got to see my cousins, there was always a feast of good food, homemade pies, and of course the presents. The Christmas tradition would be that everyone would receive two gifts; one from my grandparents and one from an uncle and aunt. Since there was so many of us kids. Everyone would gather in a large circle. Two uncles would pass out presents to everyone. Every year I would get baseball cards form my grandparents along with a gift from uncle and aunt. One year after all the presents were passed out, my grandpa made a big deal that there was one more gift to be given out. Grandpa gathered everyone together. All my uncles were there gathering around me. My family was in the front to see the special gift. Then grandpa started off by saying how important this next gift was and since I was the oldest grandson in the family, I would receive the last gift.

Imagine the excitement in the Pranga household. I was excited. This last gift meant a lot to my grandpa. My grandpa had all of his sons gather in a circle for this occasion. I knew this was going to be quite a present. I was 12 years old and my grandpa brings out this present. It is three feet long and wrapped up in newspaper. All my uncles and dad knew instantaneously what it was. I was too innocent. As any 12 year old would I unwrapped the present. When I unwrapped the special gift from grandfather it was a gun. It was a double barrel four ten gun. (See pictures). It wasn t just any gun. This was a gun that was given to my grandfather. Then my grandfather taught his five sons how to hunt quail, pheasant, squirrels, rabbits, and then deer. Now my grandfather was giving his prized possession to his grandson. My uncles were in awe that grandpa parted with that gun. My Grandpa Pranga gave away one of his most prized possessions to his 12 year old grandson that he loved very much. I found out later from my dad that every one of his brothers wanted that gun. Remember when I said that it is different culture between Cape Cod and Wisconsin. This is what I was talking about earlier. Being a kid growing up in Northern Wisconsin this was truly a special gift. It is hard to put this in context for you to understand. All I can say is when the season starts for deer hunting, it is huge. My niece got her first deer at 12 years old. Hunting is a big deal in northern Wisconsin. This was a huge gift that my grandpa gave me. It was full of love. This morning, I want to share with you that God has a special gift that he wants to give each person here. God has a precious gift that He wants everyone in this room to have. It is much better than the gun I received from my grandpa. It is even better than the gift you were thinking of. This morning, I want to share with you one of the most important verses in the entire Bible. It is a verse that every child has been taught sometime in their life. Many of you can recite this verse. You ve learned this verse in Sunday School or Vacation Bible School. If you brought your Bible please turn it to John 3:16. This morning, we are going to answer these two important questions. 1) What does a person need to know to become a Christian? 2) What does a person need to do to become a Christian? Here are the two questions: What do you have to know? What do you have to do? My hope for you this morning is that you will be able to take this one verse and be able to understand it in a new way. My hope is that when a friend or family member asks you, what does it mean to be a Christian, you will be able to explain it in a simple way. In these few words, you will be able to know what God has done for you and what you ve got to do. Before we get to the verse, let me share with you a few things about Christianity. Becoming a Christian is not about attending a church. Now don t tell Pastor Doug I said this. I want you to show up next week. Attending church, although it is very good for you, is not going to make you a Christian, any more than sleeping in a garage will make you a car. It just won t happen. No matter how

many days you sleep in the garage, you won t be a car. No matter how much you show up here at BBC, you are not going to turn into a Christian just by coming. Becoming a Christian isn t about getting your life together or straightening up either. I have heard people share once I get my life together then I can become a Christian. Let me just say, most people I know that are Christians don t have their life together yet. Please don t wait until your life is perfect. It won t happen. You cannot earn your way or be worthy enough for God. It just won t happen. For some of us we believe we have to know everything about the Bible. We should have read the bible. We should know each character in the Bible. Let me just say, there is a lot in the Bible. Most people here wished they knew more about the Bible. You don t have to wait until you know everything in the Bible to become a Christian because it won t happen. There is no test you will have to pass. Do you see how as believers we make the process more complicated than it should? None of these ways are found in the Bible as a way of being a Christian. God made his message simple. Yet we often make it more complicated. So let s turn to John 3:16 and see what God has to say John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. This is one of the most familiar verses. Many of us in this room know this verse by heart. In this verse God is giving each of us the best gift we can ever imagine. God gives a gift he wants us to hang on to. This morning we are going to explore this verse For God so LOVED the world. The first word I want to talk about is LOVE. What did we learn from Pastor Doug last week? God is full of love. What does this verse say about God? God so Loved. I want everyone here to understand one thing this morning; whether you are a believer in Jesus or someone who is checking out Christianity or someone who got dragged here this morning. I want you to understand that God loved. God is full of Love. The Bible is a story of God s love for people. We see God s love in the garden with Adam and Eve. We see it with the Israelites in the wilderness. We see it with Jesus and the twelve disciples. We see that God loves his people. God loves his people more than we can realize. Unfortunately many of us don t see God that way. There are some who believe that God is after us. God is trying to catch us doing things wrong. There are some of us who believe that God is mad at us. There are some of us who continually run away from God. We know God is there. Yet, we run after things of the world. We run after relationships. We run after money. We run after jobs or position or power. We run after happiness. Often the reason we run because we don t understand what we truly need.. God has something for us. When we are busy running after things, we miss what God has for us. The first word we need to understand about being a Christian is that God loved. God is not mad at us. God is not looking to punish you. God is not trying to take away your fun. What we need to understand is God loves you. God is full of love.

I like what Max Lucado writes in his book, Just the way You Are, If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If God had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. Whenever you want to talk, He ll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe and he chose your heart. And why does God do this? Because God loves you. God loved. That is who God is. God is full of love. Who does God love? For God so LOVED the world. Who does God love? It does not say that God loved a nation. It does not say, that God only loved good people. It does not say, that God only loves the people who loved him. John 3:16 says, God loved the world... This includes the lonely and broken hearted. The rich and the poor. The republicans, democrats, and independents. As Saint Augustine said.. God loves each one of us as if there was only one us to love. The first thing that God wants to teach us is this morning is that God loved. What is it that God wants us to learn: God has enormous amount of LOVE for every single person on earth.. Let move on to the second word. For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son. What do people who love do? People who love others like to give gifts. People who love enjoy giving. They give One of the places my wife, Christy has always wanted to visit was Washington D.C. She loves history and there is not town that has more history than Washington D.C. For our 15th wedding anniversary, I arranged a secret trip for my wife and I, without the kids to visit Washington D.C. All I told my wife was to pack for three days. Bring comfortable clothes that you can walk in. We are going on a trip. I arranged childcare. I had one of my friend s pick us up and drive us to the airport and then I gave Christy her present. Airline tickets to Washington D.C. Christy was extremely excited about the trip and the chance to go to Washington D.C. When someone gives you something special, why do they do it? Why did I pick out a trip to Washington D. C. for Christy? It is motivated out of love. I gave because of love for my wife. I knew that she always wanted to go. When my grandfather gave me that gun. My grandfather gave out of love for me and out of his love for hunting. When people give gifts or jewelry or you fill in the blank. People give because of love they have for someone. John 3:16 says, God so loved the world that he gave. who and what did God give? His only Son.. Jesus. The first thing we learned today was # 1. God loved. The second thing we learn about God is because God loved, God gave a precious gift. God gave His Son Jesus Christ. Let s move back to John 3:16, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. So what does this verse have to do with becoming a Christian? Everything. God is telling us and everyone in this room, that we need to believe in Jesus. We need to believe that Jesus is the Son of

God. We need to believe he forgives us of our sin. We need to believe in the resurrection on Easter morning. We see that the key word is believe? What does it mean to believe in something? What does it mean to believe? When God is speaking this to us, I believe it may have a deeper meaning than what you may assume. On the surface it we believe in something we know it to be true. The Bible in James 2:19 tells us that even the demons believe in one God. Matthew writes that the demons addressed Jesus as the Son of God. The demons believed and knew who Jesus was. They believed Jesus was who He said he was. I believe that God has another meaning when he uses the world believe. I believe what God is talking about is trusting in. God wants us to trust in him, which is a deeper meaning to the word believing in. Each one of us, needs not to just believe in Jesus or who Jesus is. The demons and the devil believe in Jesus. What we are called to do as Christians is to believe and trust in Jesus. We need to believe in Jesus. We need to trust his ways are better than our own. We need to be devoted to Jesus Christ. The devil and the demons knew who Jesus was. The devil and demons believed in Jesus. Yet, the demons and the devil did not trust in Jesus. They were not devoted to Jesus. Who did the devil and demons trust in Themselves As Christians we are called to believe and trust in Jesus; that Jesus ways are better than our own. This idea may seem contrary to our instincts. I would venture to believe that most of us grew up thinking that we needed to do more than believe and trust. For some of us we have grown up believing that we have to earn our way to God. That only way God will love us is by doing more things for him. We believe we have to attend church every Sunday. We believe we have to be a good person. We believe that our good has to outweigh our bad. For some of us we make a pact with God. If we are going through a difficult time in our life, what do we say? God if you rescue me from this situation, then God I will follow you. I will be a better person. God just rescue me. And if you rescue me God, then I will turn my life around and I will follow you. All of these examples are work oriented. If we work hard enough. Then and only then will God love me. Then I am worthy of becoming a Christian. We believe we have to do more because that s the way the world we live in operates. Unfortunately, many of us believe Christianity is that way as well. I want to tell you a secret. I want to let you in on a big secret this morning. That is not how Christianity works. Let me tell you something cool. Now listen to what I am going to say, God is not looking for us to prove or earn our love from him. God is full of love for us. What separates Christianity from all other religions? All other major religions focus on what the person or the follower must do to earn their way. What Jesus wants us to see, is that it s not because of what you or I have done, but what Jesus did for us.

What did Jesus do? Jesus died on the cross. Why did Jesus have to die on the cross? It was to pay the price for our sins, the debt that we each owe. It was to take our place for the sins we commit towards God. God wants to give a present to each person here today. Christianity is all about what Jesus has done for us. What is God saying to us today? God is saying to us today, is that we need to believe in him, we need to trust in him, and be devoted to him. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved through your faith. And this is not your own doing; it is gift of God. God s has a gift to you. It is not by works. You cannot earn your way to heaven. What God is offering you is a gift. God wants you to receive his gift. But you can only receive this gift by faith. It is by believing in Him. What God is telling us this morning is that God s Part: Our Part: (1) God loved (3) We believe (put our trust) in Jesus (2) God gave (Jesus) Let s get back John 3:16 for the last point For God so loved the world that God gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Jesus shall not perish but have eternal life. God shares with us one last important truth. Our life does not end here on earth. Our life here on Earth is not very long. It only lasts for a short time. This verse today says, there are two places we may go when we leave earth. We are either going to perish. Which means we will separated from God. Which I won t get into specifics it is not a good place. The bible is clear that some will perish. The second place is to be with God and have eternal life. When we have eternal life, we are with God. ROPE: This rope represents eternity. The color version is the life of David Pranga. I am 43 years old. It is just a short part of this rope. This is my time here on Earth. God tells us our life will not end. Our life on earth may be a short period of time. But our life will continue. How long is eternity? Forever. This rope can go on forever. I want everyone to see this. The color part of the rope represents my life here on Earth? It is a very short time. How long does eternity last? It goes on forever and ever. What eternal life is God referring too? Jesus is referring to heaven. What comes to your mind when you think of eternal life with Jesus? What is heaven going to be like? For some of us we think about: Choirs or singing praise endlessly We think of seeing loved ones and being reunited with them

For some of us we are dreaming of playing golf, baseball, fishing, or a musical instrument For others of us we are looking forward to a new body, instead of the broken down one we have here. Others of us are looking forward to a place of love, no death, no pain, no sickness, full of joy We all have a different picture of what heaven is going to be like. What I can say, is that heaven is going to be a glorious place. Better than any place you can ever imagine. What do we know about life in general? We all know the mortality rate on earth is nearly 100%. There have not been too many people that have come back to life after being dead. God made each of us as eternal beings. God wants each person here to spend eternity with him. That is God s plan. God loves each person here. God gave out of his love a gift for each of us. Remember this gift is bigger and better than anything we can imagine. What we need to remember this morning is this: God s Part: What do you need to know about Christianity? (1) God loved (world which includes you) (2) God gave (present - Jesus his Son) Our Part: What we must do to become a Christian (3) We believe (we need to put our trust in Jesus) (4) We receive eternal life (heaven) We should be excited about John 3:16. Let us read it one last time together. For God so loved the world that God gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Jesus shall not perish but have eternal life. Prayer:
