1 The Probus Club of Burlington Lakeshore Hi-Lites December January Monday, January 14 10:00 AM Angela Reid Community Policing Management Committee Rodney Devitt, President (289) Bill Willson, 1 st Vice President (905) Ken Telmer, 2nd Vice President (905) Malcolm Ramsay, Secretary (905) Mike Hoshooley, Treasurer (905) Ronald Luxon, Past-President (905) Duncan McPhail, Speakers (905) Mike McInnis, Membership (905) Dave McKenzie, Hi-Lites (905) Dave McKay, Special Events (905) Jim Gilleland, House (905) Brian Langlotz, Cheer (905) Bob Millar, 25 th Anniversary (905) Farhad Gharavy, Christmas (905) Dennis Colameco, Golf (905) Presidents Message Looking Back and Looking Ahead What a wonderful year of memories and milestones for all of us at the Probus Men s Club of Burlington Lakeshore; from engaging and thought-provoking speakers (Art Forgeries, Goodrich Salt Mines under Lake Huron, Cannabis, etc.) to events to top quality entertainment, what other venue offers so much for so little? And, let s emphasize we finished the year, our 25th, with our biggest and best celebration a sold-out Christmas Gala. Picture 125 festively festooned Probeans and spouses gathered in a room holiday decorated with trees, white linens, flowered centre-pieces and, I should mention, a well- stocked bar. If you needed anything more our hosts, Bob Miller and his Committee and Farhad Gharavy had already thought of it and provided it! The formalities included a tribute to the founding members; 9 of whom are still active. Also recognized for their contributions were the Past Presidents, including the newest inductee, Ron Luxon for whose mentoring I am very grateful. Adding to our entertainment was local (for this message, Hamilton will be considered local) journalist, teaching professor, author and most recently a much in demand public speaker, Paul Benedetti. He treated us to 3 readings from his book, You can have a dog when I m dead. All of us were thoroughly amused and entertained. Some of us found his recounting of family events very personal. I for one related directly to the story of his son moving into the basement. I had the same experience when one of my teenage sons moved into that subterranean level and transformed it into an alternate universe inhabited by pizza boxes, Nintendos, crumpled sheets and posters of their new heroes. Not surprising, pictures of Mom and/or Dad holding or playing with them did not exist in this area! In the it s a small world category, Karen learned Paul lives down the street from her daughter and across the street from a mutual acquaintance of ours. Go figure! The above remembrances are just a few of the benefits we get from membership. We all know it is the fellowship that is the core of our being so successful over 25 years in attracting and retaining 100 s of retired and semi-retired local professionals and businessmen. 2 President s Message Continued Hi-Lites March 2014 Before extending my hopes and wishes for your 2019, I want to briefly describe an activity in which Karen and I participated. As the Christmas season began, Karen s Sorority booked 16 of us to volunteer at the Food For Life facility (formerly ARC warehouse on Mainway). This would be our second year. This year we sorted and boxed 100 s of pounds of carrots that were destined to the landfill. With instruction, we quickly learned how to separate real waste from still fresh and usable. I m not exaggerating when I tell you that with some cleaning of debris and sniping off some soft ends over 90% of this waste was recycled into pound boxes and made ready for distribution to our Burlington neighbours in need. This adventure in carrots experience reminded us all we can make a difference, even if it is only carrots! Karen and I are the matriarchs of 5 children and 6 grandchildren. So I don t need tell you what are our wishes for them for 2019 and beyond. In closing, I ll go out on a limb and assume none of us has the forecasting acumen of Nostradamus. But, we do have the ability to imagine. It is with that in mind, I wish you all a happy and healthy 2019 and hope it includes your presence at our Probus monthly meetings. I know I want to be there. HAPPY 2019 Rodney Devitt, President 25 th Anniversary Celebration Stan Orr s Reflections at the November, 2018 meeting Good morning fellow Probus members and guests. Upon retiring from the Royal Bank, I didn t wish to attend Rotary meetings on a weekly basis, which was part of their membership requirements. I learned of the Probus Club which was connected to Rotary and was being established by George Grummett as an extension of Rotary. I joined as a founding member and took on the role of Membership Chairman. The executive included Harry Shewchuck and Ian McLean, and, if you can believe it, Ian was pushing to hold the numbers at 75 or less. Over the years, we have had the benefit of many well-known, interesting and accomplished speakers. As the club became well known our membership continually expanded-including many of my curling buddies. After the meetings, many of us would go for lunch and beverages at the Queen s Head or the Legion. This year to celebrate our 25 years of existence, formal plans are well underway to gather on Monday Dec 10 th at the atrium banquet centre. We expect over 120 guests to attend a formal Christmas luncheon including a guest speaker, Paul Benedetti, an award-winning journalist, author and educator. The club arranges many social events such as theatre trips and golf and curling tournaments. It s a great way to meet and communicate with former business people. I m pleased to be part of this great group. Thank you, Stan and all the 25 th Anniversary special speakers over the past several months The Christmas Luncheon was a huge success. We would like to relay to you a message of appreciation expressed by Christina Moskal: I am ing on behalf of my husband, Richard and myself. I am a member of the Ladies Probus Central Burlington and we attended the Men s 25 th Anniversary Christmas Luncheon. We wish to thank all the members who helped organize such an enjoyable and memorable afternoon. The Atrium Lobby and Dining Room were decorated so beautifully and very festive. The luncheon was delicious, the members mingling and enjoying each other s company. The speaker was w w w. b u r l i n g t o n l a k e s h o r e p r o b u s. o r g Page 2

3 entertaining which added to a most successful afternoon. When an event runs so smoothly, a lot of preparation has been made in the background. It certainly put everyone in the Christmas Spirit. Sincerely, Christina Moskal Please check out some of the photos taken at the luncheon later in this issue of Hi-Lites. for the 2018/19 membership year. The club membership year and fiscal year both begin October 1 each year. As per club practice, all members who have not renewed by January 31 will lose their membership privileges. Members can renew their membership by mail to: Mike McInnis, Membership Chair 2097 Kerns Road, Burlington, L7P 1P7 Provided by Mike Wain for the 25 th Anniversary Committee Guest Speaker Angela Reid We look forward to welcoming PC Angela Reid as our first speaker of Angela is employed as a police officer with the Halton Regional Police Service. 4 Events Committee In arranging our events program for the year, it is necessary to begin with our theatre program as group sales start at the beginning of December and good seat blocks go quickly. In fact, some have started already, so some dates are firm, but others will not be confirmed until later next month. NOTE - the enthusiastic descriptions below are those provided by the Festivals themselves and should not be taken literally. 1. Shaw Festival - Niagara*on*the*Lake Applied for - 40 seats for The Ladykillers Is it so hard to kill one little old lady? Based on one of the best-loved British films of all time (featuring Alec Guinness), this comedy tour-de-force is set in post-world War II London where five oddball crooks pose as an amateur string quintet to rent a room from a little old lady. It is supposed to be the nerve centre for their greatest ever heist, but things soon start to get complicated. Even then, these hardened criminals only need to commit one easy murder to get clean away with the loot. But are they up to it? After taking the West End by storm, this deliciously macabre comedy now has its North American premiere. Date Tuesday, June 25 PM. 2. Foster Festival - First Ontario Art Center - St. Catharines Confirmed - 40 tickets for Hilda's Yard Hilda and Sam Fluck are finally on their own after their grown children Gary and Janey leave the nest. They re looking forward to rekindling their romance in their Golden Years but their love nest suddenly becomes a bit crowded with the unexpected return of the children and some very exotic visitors. Set in 1956, this delightful comedy sparkles with unexpected twists and turns as Hilda attempts to corral her family s foibles. Hilda s Yard reunites Norm Foster and Artistic Director Patricia Vanstone as Sam and Hilda Fluck. Holy toot! You re going to love it! Date - Thursday, July 2:00 PM - 2 hour performance followed by "talk-back" in the lounge. 3. Stratford Festival Confirmed - 34 tickets for Billy Elliot Dreams don t come easy in the hardscrabble mining town, riven by a bitter national strike, where eleven-year-old Billy lives with his bereaved family. But Billy s discovery of his talent for dance awakens in him a passion that will transform his life and win the hearts of his whole community. With its inspirational story, breathtaking dance numbers and music by pop legend Elton John, this w w w. b u r l i n g t o n l a k e s h o r e p r o b u s. o r g Page 4

5 award-winning show based on the smash-hit movie will appeal to all. Date - Thursday, Sept 2:00 PM Tickets will be sold at the three meetings prior to the date set by the Festival for final payment. All Seats are Orchestra Level in the Center area and near the stage. Prices for each event will be announced when finalized. They will be about 35% below regular prices.
