1 Rochester Yacht Club * LOG THE December, Happy Holidays from everyone at RYC! Est. 1877

2 2 Commodore s Message Dear Fellow Members: December means the holiday season is upon us and it is also time for us to elect a new slate of Flag Officers. Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Commodore these last two years. I have thoroughly enjoyed this time and experience. Vice Commodore Fred Karshick and Rear Commodore Skip Shumway have served our club admirably and it is time for them each to move up the ladder. The Nominating Committee has recommended Charlie Ross to become the new Rear Commodore. Charlie is an excellent choice and has spent the last two years as chairman of the House Committee and RYC board member. Charlie also previously served as the Club Secretary (and board member) for several years. Fred, Skip and Charlie will make a great leadership team for RYC. Please come to the Annual Meeting on December 16th and show your support for our new Flag Officers and treasurer, John Miraglia, secretaries Ed Gardner and Tom Kankoski, and board members, Shane Olney, Steve Wilde and Kurt Sertl. December 3rd is your best opportunity to purchase RYC regalia for holiday gifts at the display of all the new items. December 12th Santa arrives at RYC for brunch with all the children, whose parents made RESERVATIONS! Our annual Holiday Ball is December 18th. Please plan on participating in the festivities by making your reservation now. This event is always a sell out and I wouldn t want any of you to miss the fun. December and 2004 will be brought to an end with our New Year s Eve event. Turn around the next day for our annual New Year s Day reception, two wonderful ways to complete our holiday season at RYC. I cannot emphasize enough the need for reservations, except the annual New Year s Day reception, where they are not required. On the 1st, please join us between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. and be served by our newest Flag Officers, Board Members and, of course, their spouses. This reception is the first opportunity for 2005 to make new friends at RYC for the upcoming year. December also brings an abundance of private parties to RYC. Anyone wishing to book a private holiday event, please contact our Clubhouse Manager Cynthia Rushlaw to book your event. Thanks to our Communications Chair, Kurt Karshick, you may now contact Cynthia via at rychousemanager@rochesteryc.com and Chef Terry at rycchef@rochesteryc.com. Again, thank you all for all your support during the last two years. I truly believe member satisfaction and enjoyment of our Club has dramatically improved over the last year and I have each and every one of you to thank for that! Here s wishing everyone bright skies and smooth sailing into the next year. Michael S. Ray Commodore The Flag Officers and The Board of Directors of the Rochester Yacht Club Cordially invite you to the Annual New Year s Day Reception at The Rochester Yacht Club on the first day of January Three-thirty until six thirty in the afternoon Remembering Erica Schwenk The Womens Association in conjunction with Franz Schwenk has created the"erica T. Schwenk Female Sailors Trust Fund" All donations are accepted to assist the Women s Association in this worthy endeavor...in memory of Erica. 3 3 RYC Board of Directors Meeting November 17, 2004 Treasurer Richard McGrath made a motion to adopt the budget, as presented at the October Board Meeting, for fiscal year 12/1/04 through 11/30/05. Motion seconded and carried. Power Fleet Captain Fran Antonelli announced that the Props and Shafts awards presentation has been postponed to the Power Fleet Annual Holiday Brunch, scheduled for Sunday, December 5. All members are welcome to attend, but please call the Club to make reservations. Tim Breen, LYRA delegate, reported that at the LYRA annual meeting that Peter Pape and the crew of Blue Knight had been voted 2004 Boat of the Year. Boating Safety Officer Ron Premo reported that 22 employees and members attended the CPR/defibrillator training course, and all in attendance successfully completed the requirements for certification. Vice Commodore Fred Karshick reminded all of the members to submit their requests for Sailor s Trust reimbursements directly to him. Emily Hawley reported for the Women s Association. The Women s Association has drafted a disbursement policy for the Erica T. Schwenk Fund for Female Sailors. Scholarships and awards will be presented annual at the June meeting of the Women s Association. Entertainment Committee chairperson Lisa Dorsey reminded the membership of the Holiday Ball on December 18, and discussed the plan for New Year s Eve. This year, the Club will be serving ala carte dinners in the grill room from 6 to 9 PM, and a pianist will provide background music from 8 pm until Midnight. The Entertainment Committee will start decorating the Club for the holidays immediately after Thanksgiving. Facilities chairman Jake North reported that the litigation against CSX is still ongoing. The Army Corps has stated that the toxicity level of the sediment in our basin is not sufficient to allow for discharge in open water. Steve Wilde reported that the Regatta Committee met on November 16, and is drafting a calendar through Next year, RYC will be host to several regattas, including a one-design keelboat regatta. Rear Commodore Skip Shumway reported that the Trophy Committee has expressed a desire to re-dedicate some of the RYC perpetual trophies. The addition of the 40.7 fleet has moved the divisions down. Rear Commodore Shumway also reported on the status of the basin dredging. There is approximately $10,000 left in the budgeted amount for 2004, but quotes have come in for $24,000 and $78,000, with work to be done during December. A motion was made and carried to proceed with dredging the basin entrance. Rear Commodore Shumway also updated the membership on the proposed purchase of the used 420 s from Hobart William Smith College. The college was very inflexible regarding negotiating a reduced price for the boats. It has been agreed to purchase 10 boats at $3100 each, for a total of $31,000. Motion made and carried to purchase 10 of the 420 s from Hobart William Smith. High School Sailing Wrap Up We had our most successful season of high school sailing this fall. There were 48 sailors enrolled from nine different school districts. We were very lucky with the great fall weather to be on the water for all but two days for some great practices out on the lake and in the river. We traveled from Connecticut to Southern Maryland and all parts in between. The McQuaid/Mercy team qualified for all three district regatta's and had the best overall record for the Rochester Area schools. With the addition to the 420 fleet this winter we will be increasing our practice time from 2 days a week to 4 days a week. Look out for the up and coming high school sailors from RYC!
