July has always been my favorite month. For one thing, it begins with my birthday. Secondly, I love summer weather. And third, I love going on vacations and July is usually when I take a vacation as do many in our congregation. Getting away for a while can be a good thing. Rest, relaxation, and recreation all can serve to rejuvenate, restore, and renew us. It s not terribly difficult to argue in favor of taking a vacation because most of us are already sold on the idea. However, we wouldn t be fully Lutheran if we didn t have at least a little bit of a guilty feeling about being so self absorbed and idle as when we take a vacation. As the old adage puts it: Idleness is the devil s playground. When pondering any moral or theological issue in life, it is helpful to consult the Bible. However, there are some issues which the Scripture seems to provide both justification and condemnation of the same issue. Taking a vacation would be one of these issues. On the one hand there seems to be some justification for taking time for rest. There is even a commandment to observe the Sabbath. Leviticus 23:3 says it all: Six days shall work be done; but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no work: it is a Sabbath to the LORD throughout your settlements. Also, it is clear that Jesus and his apostles needed some time to get away from their work. Consider Mark 6:30-32: The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. On a side note, I suspect the boat they took was a fishing boat (Bass Pro?) even more Biblical proof for taking a vacation. On the other hand, there are plenty of Biblical texts that promote industriousness and the virtue of hard work. These texts remind us of the dangers of idleness. Consider Proverbs 18:9 which reads: One who is slack in work is close kin to a vandal. Or consider 2 Thessalonians 3:10-11 which reads: For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Clearly, the wisdom of the scriptures both warns us of the dangers of idleness and teaches us the virtue of industriousness. So, just how are we supposed to feel about taking a vacation? I believe the best answer to this question is to remember what Jesus once said: Come to me, all you that are weary 2

and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. (Matt. 11:28) In him, rest is sacred, without him, it become mere idleness. The most important thing about vacation is that we get away from work to draw nearer to our Lord. Only in Christ do we find the rest and peace we really need. Also, vacations are a wonderful opportunity to draw nearer to your loved ones. I hope and pray for all of you who are traveling or just enjoying some extra leisure time at home this summer, that you would be safe and refreshed both physically and spiritually. Peace and God s blessings, Pastor Bob Grace and Peace to you, It s nearly Vacation Bible School time! Like so many of you, I have such vivid and fond memories of Vacation Bible School at my childhood church in the Quad Cities, Zion Lutheran Church. I remember the sunny church yard filled with kids, hot Sunday School classrooms (we didn t have air conditioning in the church yet!), songs, snacks, stories, and so many moms and grandmas leading us through the lessons of our faith. I also remember the weeks leading up to VBS. That s because my grandmother would have all of us grandkids, she watched over 6 of us during the summer, canvas the neighborhoods around the church with flyers. She would slowly follow alongside of us in her van, making sure we got every house and stopping to personally give flyers to moms and children who happened to be outside. I remember loving VBS I don t remember loving the neighborhood canvassing! As a kid, I wasn t always happy to see kids at VBS that weren t regular church kids and I didn t understand why we went out of our way to invite them. Being a bit of a goody two shoes at that age, I would get frustrated with kids who didn t know how to behave in church. Us kids who were regular attendees with families who belonged to the church, knew exactly how to behave! We knew to be quiet when Pastor Kilps stood at the pulpit. We knew to bow our heads and fold our hands when an adult said, Let us pray. We knew that you were supposed to have a quarter for the plate when it passed by. Those other kids didn t know these things and it was obvious to me. I asked my grandmother once why we had to keep inviting these kid and her answer was simple, They need to hear the stories too. Continued on page 4 3

Continued from page 3 That answer didn t do much for me then, but it does everything for me now. Getting those kids to behave like church kids was never the point for my grandma. It was simply about the stories. Stories about Noah and his ark, Father Abraham and his many sons, Jonah and the whale, and of above all - the story of Jesus. Perhaps these kids would only hear the stories once and then never come back, but often once is enough. They may never know what a tithe is, but they would know Jesus is God s son and just maybe that would make all the difference. This year our Vacation Bible School is July and the theme is, Rome: Paul and the Underground Church. The kids will be learning about the sacrifices and devotion of those first followers of Jesus. They will hear about love and compassion, joy and mission they will hear the stories of Jesus. So, I invite you to invite others, especially those you know may never come back to Faith Lutheran Church, because those are the ones who need to hear the stories the most. And if you can, offer them a ride to and from church, I ll do the same! Peace & Joy, Pastor Candice Happy Independence Day everyone! As I think of the blessings we have, living in an independent country, one nation under God, and recently celebrating Memorial Day, I can t help but think of those who have gone before us to give us the opportunities we have. Being raised in an Air Force family, living in a military community my whole life, sharing our table and altar with so many active and retired service men and women is such a blessing. Freedom is wonderful, especially the freedom of religion. Growing up, I was never aware that some countries will put you to death for merely carrying a Bible. Some people are persecuted for practicing a different religion. Borders are sometimes closed to people because of their religious beliefs. Praise God that we are a nation of independent people, free to make choices, one nation under God. Thank you to all those who made it happen and continue to make it happen! We are so grateful for the sacrifices you and your families make for the freedom we experience every day! Andy Dichsen, Council President 4

This summer, we are doing something a little different in Sunday School - lessons are being offered for the junior and senior high youth. We are studying contemporary Christian music in Jammin with Jesus and looking at how songs can take bible stories and bring them to life and make real the teachings of Jesus. We most recently listened to the song Free as a Bird by Rend Collective. I chose this song not only because it is by my favorite band, but because of its message concerning joyful living. So often we live chained up by sin, fears, and addictions. For me, fear is one of the biggest chains in my life; fear at not succeeding, fear of the future, fear of the unknown. Without Jesus in my life, those fears and chains would drag me down. The beauty of this song for me is that it is a reminder that there is nothing greater than God s love for us. He sent Jesus to break those chains that bind us and to free us from the things that would separate us from Him. This summer, I hope that you have some time of your own to listen to the songs on the radio and find God s truths that, in the daily grind of life, sometimes get forgotten. You break us out of our cages, into the wide-open spaces, we are free, free as a bird on the wind. Rend Collective Jenny Roberts, Youth Director The Food pantry spent an additional $7, for extra food. 272 families were served; 574 were adults and 268 were children, making a total of 842 individuals served. The pantry was open 13 days in May. Because of the May Postal food drive, we were able to spend less money. Thanks to all who helped with the postal drive and contributed food. The pantry thanks everyone who helps us with food items and bags. Please remember that only non-perishable food items and paper and plastic bags should be placed in the little red wagon in the foyer. If you have non-food items that you wish to donate to the township s monthly garage sale (that benefit s the Food Pantry), please take those items directly to the township garage in back of the township building. God s Blessings, Marjorie Ballard 8

Summer Camp at PYC... We welcomed 28 royal subjects to camp where they could explore the world of princesses and knights in training. They enjoyed hearing exciting adventure stories, dressing up, learning kingdom etiquette and trying out their own knight skills. Art activities included making crowns, swords and shields, along with creating dragons and catapults. Fun was had by all and we ended the week with a celebration that included a princess procession and knight dubbing ceremony! We are looking forward to another PYC camp this summer (July 31 through August 3) with Water Works being the theme. The PYC Kid Wash will come out and children will enjoy getting wet while making summer memories with friends and consuming a good supply of popsicles! We are thankful to God for seasons, strong bodies and the ability to have fun together. I hope you are enjoying your summer and are taking time to make memories as well! Walking beside families and encouraging childhood, Kim Lloyd, PYC Director 9

Stephen Ministry We all experience life transitions. Some can be major crises that require therapy or greater intervention. Most of life transitions are blips in our current life circumstance, and we would benefit from a partner to walk with us through the transition. These transitions are perfect for a Stephen Minister. They walk with the person going through the transition; giving them physical, emotional, and spiritual support. Stephen Ministers are trained people who bring Christian care to others. Consider people you know, or even yourself, who are in the middle of a transition perhaps the loss of a job, an empty nest, or an overwhelmed new mom or dad. If you know someone who may benefit from a Stephen Minister, please give them information on Stephen Ministry which you can find in the narthex or in the pews here at church. Or have them call Janet Hernandez in the church office ( ) who can answer their questions. If you would like to learn more about Stephen Ministry, possibly becoming a Stephen Minister, or are in need of a Stephen Minister, please call Janet Hernandez in the church office. Health Concerns Have you noticed how long the health concerns list is on the back page of the bulletin announcements? We are going to try something different, and we d appreciate your feedback. In July, you will see only the newest health concerns listed, but you will find the complete list in Faith s newsletter every month. As always, please contact the office if a name can be removed from the list or added to the list. Thank you! Save the Date! Blessing of the Backpacks Sunday, August 13 during 9:30 worship 11
