1 First United Methodist Church 404 Azalea St. Lake Jackson, TX September 7, 2016 Volume 46, Issue 8 The Messenger Lindsay Pulido I am so excited to introduce Lindsay Pulido, our new Children s Ministry Director to you. As you know, Kimberly Bowers has retired from that position and will be ending her time with us at the end of September. Lindsay will come on board on September 1 to learn the ropes before Kim leaves (actually, she s not leaving she ll be our # 1 volunteer!) I asked Lindsay to put together a short biography for you to get to know her. Come this Sunday, September 4 th, when we will introduce her in the worship services. Lindsay writes: I am a former Second Grade teacher and currently a stay at home mom. I m originally from Oklahoma and have been a Texas resident since I began working for the Boys and Girls Club as an after school Site Director while attending Brazosport College. I received my Associates in Early Childhood Education at BC. I continued working for the BGCBC while pursuing my Bachelor s degree at the University of Houston Clear Lake. After commuting for a million years (really only 2), I achieved my Bachelor s of Science in Interdisciplinary studies and my Texas Educator Certificate. I then taught at Bess Brannen Elementary as a second grade teacher for five incredibly fulfilling years. After lots of prayer and debate, my husband and I decided it would be best for me to be a stay-at-home mom. Apparently, God had other plans! My husband, Jacob Pulido, and I have a 3 year old son, Preston. We live in Oyster Creek. My husband works for DOW and attends classes at BC. He s on course to graduate this December (Hurray!). Our family enjoys fishing, gardening and camping. My son, Preston, attends School for Little People. That is how we heard about FUMC and began attending last winter. We have been overwhelmingly blessed with all the new friends we have made here. I m so thrilled to have the opportunity to work with all our amazing volunteers to help strengthen our children and family ministries. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in the congregation and hope to add more children and families to it! Welcome, Lindsay!! Grace and Peace! 5 TRUST = CONFIDENCE Depending on people is hard. Life is hard. So the only person we can totally trust is God. Come join us in Sunday School as we learn to trust God just like God's people did long ago. *Abraham moved to follow God's wishes * Elijah trusted God * Jesus even trusted God while he was on the cross Putting our trust in God is not easy! So our memory verse this month is: Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding. It is easier to choose our own path, instead of listening to God's plans. Our Bible stories will show us how to trust GOD! Week 3 - Genesis 41 Joseph and Dreams Bottom Line - When the pressure is on, you can trust God is with you. Week 4 Genesis Joseph and his brothers Bottom Line - You can trust God no matter what. I don't know about you, but I want to put my confidence in someone I can depend on and that person is GOD. I can trust God no matter what. May God be with you and your family in the future and may you learn to depend on Him! Thank you for allowing me to serve your family and First Church. Your children are a precious gift from God! Love you all!!!! Week 1 - Genesis 37/ 39:1-2 Joseph and Jacob Bottom Line - When you think you're alone, you can trust God is with you. Praising God Always, Kimberly Bowers Children's Ministry Director First United Methodist Church Week 2 - Genesis 40 Joseph's story continues Bottom Line - When life doesn't make sense, you can trust God is with you. 5

6 Summer Intern Memories #loveourvannysa September 2016 K I M C O P E L A N D Y O U T H D I R E C T O R youth@ljfumc.org youth@ljfumc.org Spaghetti Fundraiser for Alisha Cannan s Medical Expenses Sept 25 at Noon Since I ve been at First UMC, I ve seen many church youth and families be supported and lifted up through prayer, guidance, blood drives, church ministries, car rides, meals, and occasionally even through financial support. We now have an opportunity to support one of our teenagers in a very important way. Last month, Alisha Cannan fell and had some serious injuries to her teeth, jaw, and face. Her family is facing enormous medical bills from the surgeries and recovery. On Sunday, September 25, our youth group is having a Spaghetti Fundraiser for Alisha. Immediately after the 11am service, head over to Wesley Hall for a delicious spaghetti lunch. We will be accepting donations to help support Alisha s family with her medical expenses. For your donation, you ll receive spaghetti with homemade sauce, salad, bread, a drink, and a bite of dessert. You may also get a container of spaghetti if you want to take it to go. We ll start serving right after the 11am service and continue until 1:30. Youth and volunteers will start cooking and preparing at 11am. Donations may be left in the Wesley Hall receptacles even if you don t want to eat. Your donations are tax-deductible. You may also write a check, payable to the church, and put Alisha in the memo line. 9 A message from. Labor Day - Opportunities to Share Each September we celebrate Labor Day as a time to recognize and celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers. This month, take a minute to consider the economic and social contributions our church has made to the community. Show your support by volunteering a bit of time for the 100th Habitat for Humanity build between September 8th & 15th. It is being called the "Faith Build" as area churches are providing both funds and volunteers as a witness to Christ. Or perhaps you may be called to set up an endowment to support a new project or area of need that fits your passion. For more information about supporting our church, contact Heartspring Methodist Foundation at ( ) or office@heartspringmethodist.org. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV Finance Committee Update 2016 Communion Offerings Amount Given January Pastor's Discretionary Fund $ 673 February Freeport Port Ministry $ 703 March - UMCOR $ 997 April - UM Army $ 1,227 May - Golden Cross $ 631 June - Prison Ministry $ 604 July - Crystal Crafters $ 624 August - Habitat for Humanity $ 2,857 September - Back Pack Buddies October - Society of St Stephen November - Food Basket December - Christmas Offering 9
