6 Daggett County Newsletter Page 6 The History of Mother s Day While the Mother s Day that we celebrate on the second Sunday of May is a fairly recent development, the basic idea goes back to ancient mythology to the long ago civilization of the Greeks and Romans. The Greeks paid annual homage to Cybele, the mother figure of their gods, and the Romans dedicated an annual spring festival to the mother of their gods. Mothering Sunday In the 16th century England a celebration called Mothering Sunday was inaugurated setting aside for visiting one s mother. The eldest son or daughter would bring a mothering cake which would be cut and shared by the entire family. Family reunions were the order of the day, with sons and daughters assuming all household duties and preparing a special dinner in honor of their mother. Sometime during the day, the mother would attend church services with her family. Julia Ward Howe Here in America, in 1872, Julia Ward Howe, a famous poet and pacifist who fought for abolition and women s rights, suggested that June 2 be set aside to honor women in the name of peace. This happened not long after the bloody Franco- Prussian war in which Howe began to think of a global appeal to women. The idea died a quick death. Nothing new happened again until Miss Anna M Jarvis, of Philadelphia, took up the banner. Anna M. Jarvis After her mother died in 1905, Miss Anna Jarvis wished to memorialize her life and started campaigning for a national day to honor all mothers. Her mother, known as Mother Jarvis, was a young Appalachian homemaker and lifelong activist who had organized Mother s Work Days to save the lives of those dying from polluted water. During the Civil War, Mother Jarvis had also organized women s brigades, encouraging women to help without regard for which side their men had chosen. At the time, there were many special days for men, but none for women. On May 10, 1908, a Mother s Day service was held at a church in Grafton, West Virginia, where Anna s mother had taught. Thus was born the idea that the second Sunday in May be set aside to honor all mothers, dead or alive. Anna Jarvis, bombarded public figures and various civic organizations with telegrams, letter and in-person discussions. She addressed groups large and small. At her own expense, she wrote, printed, and distributed booklets extolling her idea. Her efforts came to the attention of the mayor of Philadelphia, who proclaimed a local Mother s Day. From the local event she went on to Washington, D.C. The politicians there knew a good thing when they saw it and were quick to lend verbal support. West Virginia was the first state to officially adopt the holiday, and others followed suit. Proclamation of the day by the various states led Rep. J. Thomas Heflin of Alabama and Sen. Morris Sheppard of Texas to present a joint resolution to Congress that Mother s Day be observed nationwide. The resolution passed both houses. Mother s Day Today In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the second Sunday in May as a legal holiday to be called Mother s Day dedicated to the best mother in the world, your mother. For the first few years, the day was observed as a legal holiday, but in absolute simplicity and reverence church services were held in honor of all mothers, living and dead. In many ways family observance much resembled that of the British version of Mothering Sunday. The Greatest love is a mother s; Then comes a dog s, then comes a sweetheart s. - Polish Proverb The daughter of a good mother will be the mother of a good daughter. ANON If you bungle raising your children, I don t think it matters very much what else you do. Jacqueline B. Kennedy Onassis By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great vacation-less class. Anne Morrow Lindbergh, author As is the mother, so is her daughter. Ezekiel 16:4 All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That s his. Oscar Wilde No gift to your mother can ever equal her gift to you - LIFE. ANON An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest. Spanish Proverb When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice. Once for herself and once for her child. Sophia Loren, Women and Beauty. God could not be everywhere, therefore he made mothers. Jewish Proverb A mother is not a person to lean on, but a person to make leaning unnecessary. Dorothy Canfield Fisher
7 Volume 15, Issue 5 Funny Mother Jokes Mothers support their children in every way that they can. They are the cheerleaders of their kids throughout the life. Sometimes loud and at times in subtle ways. Such is the vastness of love of mothers that she always tries to make her offspring happy even when her own times are distressed. When you become a mother, everyday becomes a mother's day. It is easy to remember the big things in life and to be grateful for. To remember those small things it takes another obsession. Yet mother's day is one special day which is celebrated to honor and respect her. It feels divine to see mothers laugh. This mother's day you can become the cheerleader for your mother and tickle her funny bone. Listed below are some funny mother's jokes. Hilarious Mother Jokes My Mother taught me about 'anticipation.' "Just wait until your father gets home." My Mother taught me to 'meet a challenge.' "What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you! Don't talk back to me!" My Mother taught me 'logic.' "If you fall out off that swing and break your neck, you're not going to the store with me." You spend a half hour searching for your sunglasses only to have your teenager say, "Mom, why don't you wear the ones you pushed up on your head?" You hear a baby cry in the grocery store, and you start to gently sway back and forth, back and forth. However, your children are at school! My mother taught me about 'hypocrisy.' "If I told you once, I've told you a million times. Don't exaggerate!" My mother taught me the 'circle of Life.' "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out." "Stop acting like your father!" For weeks a six-year old lad kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house. One day the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child. The six-year old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Furthermore, he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event. The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap and said, "Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?" Tommy burst into tears and confessed, "I think Mommy ate it!" Mother to daughter advice: Cook a man a fish and you feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish and you get rid of him for the whole weekend. The mother of three notoriously unruly youngsters was asked whether or not she'd have children if she had it to do over again. "Yes," she replied. "But not the same ones My Mother taught me about JUSTICE..."One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you...then you'll see what it's like!" The Sunday School Teacher asks, "Now, Johnny, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?", "No sir," Little Johnny replies, "I don't have to, my mom is a good cook!" Moms are fantastic, even when they're spelled upside down they're still WOW! Mothers are basically part of a scientific experiment to prove that sleep is not a crucial part of human life. ITALIAN CHICKEN Thinly slice two cloves of garlic. Drain a small jar of artichoke hearts. Place all ingredients in a bowl and pour in a few tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, a generous amount of S&P, a teaspoon of sugar, a couple tablespoons of flour {since the chicken will produce so much liquid}. Place the tomato mixture in with the boneless skinless chicken breasts {that are generously seasoned with S&P}. Place in a 350 degree oven and bake until the chicken is almost done. Take the almost done chicken out of the oven and sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the top. Place the chicken under the broiler for a few minutes {keep an eye on it!} until the cheese is golden brown and the vegetables are caramelized. Serve over whatever pasta you love and ENJOY. Page 7

11 Volume 15, Issue 5 Page 11 Things are blooming at the Daggett County Jail, and in this case that refers to the new greenhouse currently under construction. An initial private donation launched the project in the fall of 2014, which was then followed by smaller private donations. The greenhouse project was able to near completion, however, after grants were awarded by the Soil Conservation District in late 2014 and early The final phase of construction is estimated to be completed within the next 30 days and will involve the installation of a watering system, covering the frame with agricultural grade plastic, building wooden shelves for trays of seedlings, and constructing grow-boxes for indoor crops. The construction of the greenhouse has provided inmates with transitional skills, such as carpentry, and upon completion it will provide a venue for inmates to acquire additional transitional skills in the areas of botany and biology which will be useful in acquiring employment upon their release. A further benefit of the greenhouse will be the opportunity for growing fresh vegetables for inmate consumption, as well as enabling them to gain confidence in their new-found skills.
