Mark Ross As we welcome our new Pastor, Fr. Mark Ross, to St. on the Hill, we are really saying, Welcome back! For this is indeed a return for Fr. Ross not only did he serve as Parochial Vicar in our parish over 20 years ago, but also, he was born and raised right here in the Augusta area! Fr. Ross has deep connections to several local parishes. His mother grew up here at St. on the Hill, which would later become the site of his second assignment as a priest. As a child, Fr. Ross attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in downtown Augusta until the school and parish closed when he was 11 years old. At that point, his family moved to Martinez and began attending St. Teresa of Avila. Around the time Father began his freshman year at Belmont Abbey College, his parents became parishioners at Church of the Most Holy Trinity. It was at Holy Trinity that Father was ordained in The journey to his ordination as a diocesan priest took a somewhat winding path, but it was one that God had planned for him from the very beginning. I can t remember a day of consciousness that I didn t think about the priesthood, he says. A sentimental thing about my ordination at Holy Trinity is St. on the Hill welcomes Fr. Mark Ross that my vocation really started [when I was a child] at Sacred Heart, and the pews in Holy Trinity are the ones from Sacred Heart. So in those same pews I had my Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, and then my ordination. During Fr. Ross s first assignment to St. on the Hill 28 years ago, he began a Wednesday night Rosary for Life that he has continued at every parish he has served since then. In the 1990s, he helped to bring the first Perpetual Adoration Chapel to our diocese, at the cathedral. Father urges parishioners who are looking for ways to deepen their spiritual life to think continued on page 2

2 Saint Stewardship Taking Ownership in Our Parish As Catholics and as stewards of God s gifts, the Church is much more than a building in which we worship. The Church is the universal body of believers, the society that Christ established to help us grow in holiness, to bring us closer to Him through the giving of our time, talent and treasure, and to lead the world to the truth. Before Jesus ascended to the Father, He commissioned the disciples, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Mt. 28:19-20). That is the Church s mission in the world today to make disciples of all nations, to bring all men to Christ. Our parish plays a key part in that we are local representatives of the universal Church. Together, as members of this parish family, we work to carry out the Church s mission on a local level. We worship the Lord at Mass, offering Him our praise and thanksgiving, and then we go forth on a mission to make disciples to encourage our fellow parishioners in their lives of faith and to bring unbelievers into knowledge of the truth. As stewards and as members of this parish family, we are called to take ownership in our parish. It is our responsibility to make a conscious effort to be actively involved in the life of the parish, to build relationships with our fellow parishioners, and to celebrate the Mass together as often as possible (and most definitely every Sunday). By getting involved and living the stewardship way of life, our entire parish family can fulfill our mission to grow as disciples of Christ, and ultimately help fulfill the mission of the universal Church. Meet Fr. Ross continued from front cover about developing a devotion to the Rosary and perpetual adoration, as well as participating fully in the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. In the nearly 30 years that he has served in the priesthood, Father has truly enjoyed the pastoral care aspect of his vocation. I find that being with people in critical moments when they are sick and dying is very fulfilling, he says. A friend of mine likes to say that priests are like firemen you just want to know they re there and will be there when you need them. I find that s very true, as a priest. Your main job is to be there when people need you. When asked to describe himself, Fr. Ross provides two words simple and low-key. While he sees himself as a leader, he prefers not to be the center of attention, and finds he can better serve by keeping the focus on Christ. It s not about me, he says. I just do the simple work of a priest. Fr. Ross has fond memories of feeling at home with our many friendly and involved parishioners during his first assignment with us, and looks forward to serving our parish again, this time in the role of Pastor. I m happy to come back, he says. I believe it s providential to be near my family my parents and my four sisters and their families are in Martinez and I m happy to return to a parish where I have fond memories. I know the faith is very important to the people of St. s. It s a busy place, and that s a good thing. I m looking forward to getting the lay of the land, getting to know the people, their needs, and the things they are doing. For Father, the most important goal for a pastor is to grow the faith life of each and every parishioner. I really want to emphasize the spirituality, because that is what it s all about growing in the knowledge of God, loving our neighbor, being faithful to Christ and growing closer to Him, he says. So many of our longtime parishioners have wonderful memories of Fr. Ross s time here as Parochial Vicar, and we couldn t be more pleased to welcome him back to St. s! 2

3 the marianite Longtime Parishioner Ellen Cooney Shares Memories of St. s Early Years As St. on the Hill s Centennial year continues, we are truly enjoying the opportunity to hear the stories of families who have been a part of our parish from its very beginnings. People have shared memories of the many sacraments Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, and weddings celebrated by family in our church. They have chuckled wistfully over the recollection of the stern but beloved teachers at Mount St. Joseph, and the way the boys and girls were once kept separated on the playground. They have remembered the exposed cinder block walls that lined our sanctuary prior to the big renovation of the early 1990s, and they have expressed thanksgiving for the initiation of perpetual adoration and stewardship in our parish shortly after a spiritual renewal that accompanied our building s new look. Sharing with us her family memories from St. on the Hill this month is Ellen Cooney, whose parents, John Francis MSJ Class of 1950, Ellen Joy Cooney middle row, fifth from left Jack and Ellen Joy Cooney were a part of the parish from its earliest days. My father was already living on Central Avenue when my mother and her parents, James J. Joy and Catherine Catie Mulherin Joy, moved to the Hill from Sacred Heart in 1922, Ellen recalls. If I remember correctly, my mother was the third person in her family to be married at St. on the Hill. Ellen grew up attending Mass at St. on the Hill and going to school at Mount St. Joseph, as did her five siblings Catherine Joy ( Joy ); William ( Bill ); ; John Francis, Jr. ( Jack Jr. ); and Jeanne. She fondly remembers walking to Mass each Sunday with her family from their home on Bellevue Avenue, and points to the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation as particularly important moments in her faith formation here at St. on the Hill. Like so many others who grew up here during the early continued on page 6 Like so many others who grew up here during the early days of our parish, one of Ellen s dearest childhood memories of our church is the traditional May Procession that used to involve parishes from all around the area. We went to every church in the May Procession, she recalls. On a Sunday afternoon, the children marched around the church, and you had flowers that you put on the Blessed Mother. All of the families were involved. 3

4 Saint St. on the Hill to be Showcas 44 There is quite an exciting property that is going to be featured in the annual Summerville Tour of Homes this year our very own St. on the Hill Catholic Church! In this, our Centennial year, people from around the area will have the opportunity to visit our beautiful church and learn a little bit about its long history here on the Hill. The Summerville Neighborhood Association, or SNA, was founded in 1976 and, almost immediately after, the tradition of an annual tour of homes was born. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the tour, which was originally intended to showcase homes that were available in our area during a period in the 1970s, when many families began moving out to the suburbs in search of newer construction. Parishioner Lou Garren, co-founder and current President of the SNA, explains that the annual Tour of Homes continues today as a fundraiser that celebrates the beauty of this National Historic District s homes and buildings. We have little houses and big houses on the tour, and the idea is to show off our neighborhood and to encourage people to protect and treasure what s here, she says. We are just guardians of these properties they own us, we don t own them. Anyone who lives here can tell you that. The inclusion in the tour of public properties and churches began several years ago, and since then, places such as Appleby Library, Reid Memorial Church, and the Summerville Cemetery have been featured. So, we have had other properties like this showcased in the past, and when we got the call [asking if St. s could participate], we jumped at the chance, Lou says. We are thrilled for St. s to be part of the tour. As Lou points out, one of our longtime parishioners has already played a special part in the Summerville Tour of Homes Laura Cameron. The oldest parishioner of St. on the Hill at age 101, Laura has played the piano at homes on the tour for the last several years. One year, when she was playing in a house that was built in the 1920s, she even brought along her original sheet music from the era! In addition to being featured as a stop on the Tour of Homes, our parish is participating in this year s fundraiser in another special way. The Summerville Neighborhood Association will be reproducing a cookbook that was originally published about 40 years ago by the St. on the Hill Ladies Guild. The Summerville Sampler cookbook will be available for purchase both on site at the tour and following the tour. The neat thing about it is that there are so many businesses that are no longer around that are advertised in the cookbook, and you will see those since it will be published exactly as it was originally, Lou says. We are selling them in a package along with a Summerville logo apron that came out at the same time. The profits are going into the SNA s tree fund to replace the trees in Summerville that are dying. So, we re excited to be offering that, and hope people will consider it for Christmas gifts! As our parish celebrates its 100th anniversary, we have enjoyed hearing the memories of

5 the marianite ed in Summerville Tour of Homes many parishioners who grew up here on the Hill back when it was an almost-exclusively Catholic neighborhood. What we have learned from these nostalgic stories is that we, as a parish community, are blessed with a great historic treasure in our church. We encourage everyone to come out to the Summerville Tour of Homes this year and see our beautiful church building through new eyes! The Summerville Neighborhood Association Tour of Homes will take place on Saturday, Oct. 21, and Sunday, Oct. 22. In addition to the tour of historic homes and properties, the tour weekend will once again feature the Georgia Grown Village, hosting over 50 regional vendors on the lawn of Appleby Library. Tickets for the Tour of Homes are $35 and will be available at various locations prior to the tour dates (look for signs), and at Appleby Library on the days of the tour. Summerville Neighborhood Association members receive a discount, and you may also sign up to join the SNA when purchasing a ticket. A Unique Musical Celebration Dr. Richard Elliott to Perform Recital at St. on the Hill On Oct. 10, as part of our 100-Year celebrations here at St. on the Hill, we are proud to host Dr. Richard Elliott, Mormon Tabernacle Senior Organist, for an organ recital in the church, at 7 p.m. Dr. Elliott is Principal Organist at the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, where he participates in the daily recital series on the 206-rank Æolian-Skinner organ and accompanies the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on the choir s weekly radio and TV broadcast, Music and the Spoken Word. As accompanist for the Tabernacle Choir, he has performed in many of the world s great halls and appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including Today on NBC, the CBS Morning Show, CBS Sunday Morning, and A Prairie Home Companion. Dr. Elliott appears on dozens of recordings and videos with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. In his work with the choir, he has collaborated with many guest artists, including Andrea Bocelli, the Canadian Brass, Renée Fleming, Evelyn Glennie, the King s Singers, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Charles Osgood, the Sesame Street Muppets, Robert Shaw, James Taylor, and Bryn Terfel. In 1994, he recorded his first solo compact disc, titled In the Shadows of the Everlasting Hills, on the Pro Organo label. His second solo CD on the Mormon Tabernacle organ, Every Time I Feel the Spirit, was released in the summer of 2009 on the Klavier label. He has also recorded three compact discs in collaboration with his colleagues on the Tabernacle organ staff. Dr. Elliott is a published composer and arranger of music for organ and for choir. Prior to his appointment as a Tabernacle organist in 1991, Dr. Elliott was an assistant professor of organ at Brigham Young University. He has performed extensively as a recitalist in the United States and in Europe, and for several years was assistant organist at the John Wanamaker Department Store now Macy s in Philadelphia, home to the world s largest functioning pipe organ. A native of Baltimore, Dr. Elliott received his early musical training at the Peabody Conservatory and the Catholic University of America. He was awarded a BMus degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and MM and DMA degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. 5

We went to every church in the May Procession, she recalls. On a Sunday afternoon, the children marched around the church, and you had flowers that you put on the Blessed Mother. All of the families were involved. Some of Ellen s best memories of her school days at Mount St. Joseph revolve around playing on the girls basketball team, and she still keeps in touch with an old teammate who moved north long ago. Ellen s class of 21 students at Mount St. Joseph was considered a large one at the time, and they had to hold their 1950 graduation ceremony at the Bell Auditorium when the group could not fit on the school s stage. Many of these classmates had gone from kindergarten through high school together, and remained close long past graduation and throughout their lives. More recently, Ellen has enjoyed watching the children and grandchildren of her classmates go through school and the sacraments at St. on the Hill, as she knows how important it is for our Catholic faith to continue to be passed down through the generations. If you don t have faith, I don t see how you cope, especially when you get older, she says. I just think it s a valuable part of life, and you need your religion to survive. I don t know how people cope without it, and I don t hope to ever find out! Although Ellen now attends Holy Trinity most Sundays she is unable to drive, and gets a ride with friends to Mass she still loves having the chance to come to St. on the Hill when her family is visiting. Every time she is able, she will come to our Saturday evening Mass, where she sees so many people she has known throughout her life. And every time she walks through our sanctuary doors, it is truly a homecoming. Ellen Joy Cooney If you don t have faith, I don t see how you cope, especially when you get older. I just think it s a valuable part of life, and you need your religion to survive. I don t know how people cope without it, and I don t hope to ever find out!
