THE ANCHOR Decmber 2017 VOL. 16 No. 12 FROM OUR PASTOR It is right good and salutary as we prepare to celebrate the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we meditate on one of the great works concerning this mystery. I give the link above so you can read the whole thing. Here is a little of it to whet your appetite. Chapter 2, 7 But repentance would not guard the Divine consistency, for, if death did not hold dominion over men, God would still remain untrue. Nor does repentance recall men from what is according to their nature; all that it does is to make them cease from sinning. Had it been a case of a trespass only, and not of a subsequent corruption, repentance would have been well enough; but when once transgression had begun men came under the power of the corruption proper to their nature and were bereft of the grace which belonged to them as creatures in the Image of God. No, repentance could not meet the case. What or rather Who was it that was needed for such grace and such recall as we required? Who, save the Word of God Himself, Who also in the beginning had made all things out of nothing? His part it was, and His alone, both to bring again the corruptible to incorruption and to maintain for the Father His consistency of character with all. For He alone, being Word of the Father and above all, was in consequence both able to recreate all, and worthy to suffer on behalf of all and to be an ambassador for all with the Father. (8) For this purpose, then, the incorporeal and incorruptible and immaterial Word of God entered our world. In one sense, indeed, He was not far from it before, for no part of creation had ever been without Him Who, while ever abiding in union with the Father, yet fills all things that are. But now He entered the world in a new way, stooping to our level in His love and Selfrevealing to us. He saw the reasonable race, the race of men that, like Himself, expressed the Father's Mind, wasting out of existence, and death reigning over all in corruption. He saw that corruption held us all the closer,

because it was the penalty for the Transgression; He saw, too, how unthinkable it would be for the law to be repealed before it was fulfilled. He saw how unseemly it was that the very things of which He Himself was the Artificer should be disappearing. He saw how the surpassing wickedness of men was mounting up against them; He saw also their universal liability to death. All this He saw and, pitying our race, moved with compassion for our limitation, unable to endure that death should have the mastery, rather than that His creatures should perish and the work of His Father for us men come to nought, He took to Himself a body, a human body even as our own. Nor did He will merely to become embodied or merely to appear; had that been so, He could have revealed His divine majesty in some other and better way. No, He took our body, and not only so, but He took it directly from a spotless, stainless virgin, without the agency of human father a pure body, untainted by intercourse with man. He, the Mighty One, the Artificer of all, Himself prepared this body in the virgin as a temple for Himself, and took it for His very own, as the instrument through which He was known and in which He dwelt. Thus, taking a body like our own, because all our bodies were liable to the corruption of death, He surrendered His body to death instead of all, and offered it to the Father. This He did out of sheer love for us, so that in His death all might die, and the law of death thereby be abolished because, having fulfilled in His body that for which it was appointed, it was thereafter voided of its power for men. This He did that He might turn again to incorruption men who had turned back to corruption, and make them alive through death by the appropriation of His body and by the grace of His resurrection. Thus He would make death to disappear from them as utterly as straw from fire. God Bless! Pastor Guillaume Williams, Sr. ELDERS We wish to remind you that one of the prime duties of the Board of Elders is to assist congregational members with difficulties or problems you may have. 6 Seminary Student Greetings from St. Louis: Well, we have marked the 500th anniversary of what is considered to be the beginning of the Reformation. At our house, that usually means watching the movie Luther. And now we enter the week in our nation when it is customary to reflect on the gifts of God and to give Him thanks. But what does that normally look like? "I'm thankful for (insert material goods list here)..." Or "I'm thankful for my health, family, friends, etc." Or "Thank you for men like Luther who risked their lives for the sake of the Gospel." Don't get me wrong. None of these things, in and of themselves, are bad. And it is a very good thing to recognize that all of these things are indeed gifts from God. This year, though, my focus has been challenged; challenged to simply give thanks for the One who is the Giver. Psalm 29 begins with these words, "Ascribe to the Lord, 0 sons of God, ascribe to the Lord gl(,i, su.0 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in holy attire." And in Psalm 96 we read, "Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods." In fact, Psalms 95 and 96 would be great places to spend time meditating this week as we consider just exactly Who we are giving thanks to. Please keep us in your prayers this week as we officially begin the placement process. Pray for Dr. Nielsen and the Council of Presidents that God would give them knowledge, wisdom, and insight as they seek to discern God's will for us. We are excited and somewhat anxious to learn where God is calling us to serve His church. Call Day (April 24th) is still a very long way away. Pray for me that I will be able to maintain focus on the 'here-and-now.' Lastly, I give thanks to God for your commitment to join us on this long journey of pastoral formation. Thank you to everyone at Hope Chapel for your prayers and support. In Christ, W. Jeff & Fadia Jenkins Concordia Seminary Student

STEWARDSHIP Please remember to share your blessings by giving to Swaddling Clothes, Building Fund, Christmas Is Sharing, and Gifts of Love for shut-ins. Your help is needed for all these Funds and missions of our church. December 2017 Christmas is coming. It is a joyous time of feasting. The Church feasts upon the Word of God in sermon, song, and sacrament. We hear the proclamation of the message of the angels: Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:10 11). We mingle our voices with theirs as we sing, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased (Luke 2:14)! We receive the proclaimed Savior, Christ the Lord, not wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in manger, but wrapped in bread and wine placed into our mouths for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. We feast in great joy indeed because of this great blessing from our Lord and God. God s people in ancient Israel also feasted with great joy. The Lord showered His abundant blessing on His people. And He commanded them to feast upon it (Deut. 16). The people were to go to the place appointed, where the Lord would make His name dwell, and give offerings, each man as he was able, according to the blessing of the Lord that He had given them (Deut. 16:10, 15, 17). And there the Lord would bless them with joy as they feasted upon what the Lord had provided. They ate of the choice parts of their offerings. They enjoyed the company of all the people of God as they together heard His promises of blessing, sang of His bountiful goodness, and partook of what He gave.

We feast on the Word who became flesh to dwell among us, not just during Christmas, but throughout all the year. We feast not just on the salvation He has wrought for us in His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, but we feast also on all the temporal blessings that God gives out of His fatherly divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in us. We enjoy the rich bounty that God provides, not only in Word and Sacrament, but also in house and home, property and income, family and friends. Let us then, as did our brothers in the faith from ancient Israel, give as we are able, according to the blessing of the Lord our God that He has given us. Let us, like them, give generously of the first fruits of our income, which He gives, so that all may know and enjoy the salvation He gives and the joy we have in the Savior born in the city of David, who is Christ the Lord. Karen Kiel Treasurer LWML Ladies Guild News The ladies are gathering for their Annual Christmas Party at Lil Rizzo s again this year. 12 OUT AND ABOUT MEN S CLOTHING WANTED! The MO Career Center in Linn Creek is starting a program to help teenage boys enter the workplace. They are looking for men s clothing items that they can wear to interviews and the first week of work. If you have anything to donate, please contact Rayne or Shelly at FROM MISSOURI DISTRICT LCMS October 3, 2017 Dear Partners in the Gospel, St. Paul writes, "Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ." (Colossians 4:2-3) Thank you for your prayers for the work of the Missouri District in supporting congregations and schools, pastors and people, to be "Faithful Witnesses" where the Lord has placed us. Know that you and your congregation are in our prayers as well. We are continuing to make progress on our critical targets of "Healthy Servants," "Peaceful Ministries," and "Mission Focused Congregations." This year, I would like to focus my update on the last target by emphasizing a few items to celebrate. Plus One Initiative The Missouri District's Plus One Initiative invites every congregation to participate by reaching out to their community in one new way. More than thirty coaches have been trained to work with congregations all across the district. Grant monies have been made available to assist congregations in new community outreach efforts. Congregations of all sizes and in all types of communities can participate and are free to determine how they will seek to reach out and be "Faithful Witnesses." We have approximately 70 congregations that have already begun their projects. We hope that your congregation will participate if you are not already. Missouri District Mission Summit We hosted our very first Mission Summit on June 3 at Concordia Seminary for congregational leaders from across the district to encourage participation in God's mission. Lutheran Hour speaker, Rev. Greg Seltz, was the keynote speaker. The summit included a host of practical speakers and topics to help congregations reach

out to their communities. The list of sectional speakers included leaders from Synod's Office of National Mission, Lutheran Hour Ministries, Concordia Seminary, Lutheran Church Extension Fund and pastors and lay leaders from across Missouri District. We look forward to more events like this in the future and hope you will join us! FROM THE CHURCH SECRETARY ATTN WOODWORKERS! We are looking for a nice, polished board with slots to put on the credenza to hold the name tags. If you are interested in tackling this little project, please let the secretary know. Approximate dimensions are: 3 ½ x 23 ½ x ¾ with angled slots. Badges are 3 x 2. Find your special date to donate flowers for the Altar. Sign up early and often. The

cost of flowers is $26 per Sunday. Please be sure to put your payment in the offering plate in an envelope marked Altar Flowers and your number. COPIER NOTES: Our office copier is showing it s age. Please help the secretary keep it working smoothly by leaving it on unless it is jammed or otherwise locked up. It is easier on it to be left on than to be shut down incorrectly. Most jams lately have just been because of the direction of the paper. First is to ignore what screen is saying, just open tray 1 and remove stack of paper and turn around and replace. When tray is closed, it should continue with print job. If not, then follow the directions on the screen to remove jam. IMPORTANT! Please make sure the print job has been completed before walking away from it. It has started over-heating when left jammed. STAMP COLLECTING: Part of our collections is cancelled stamps. The LWML collects these for missions. There is a container on top of the coat racks off the narthex to drop these off in. Our collection will be taken to the LWML Rally s and our Zone President will deliver them for us. The guidelines are: Cut the stamps from the envelopes with a margin of no less than 1/4 inch around the stamp. Do save all foreign stamps. Do save all commemorative stamps that are larger than the standard size. Do save all stamps with a value of $1 or more. Do save entire postcards. Do save all stamps they will sort them now. So far the amount added to the LWML Mission Fund is over $14,000 from collecting these cancelled stamps nationwide. Recycling I have a paper box sitting to the left of the copier in the office for bad copies and old bulletins. Empty Ink jet cartridges are still accepted. A few are used at Staples to offset office supplies and the rest go to Habitat for Humanity. Next time you have an empty cartridge, PLEASE DON'T THROW

IT AWAY! Just put it in a Ziploc bag or the original cartridge box, bring it to the church office. All proceeds go towards office supplies and to build more homes in the spirit of humanity. Collections requested: infant items for Swaddling Clothes mission Cancelled stamps for missions (LWML) Money-off coupons no expiration date - for Concordia Seminary Food Bank (LWML) Portals of Prayer Prison Ministries (LWML) Empty Inkjet Cartridges Offset office supplies & Habitat for Humanity Office Secretary Hours for December Monday thru Friday - 8 am to 12 pm.
