1 South Carolina United Methodist Conference Hand-in-Hand in the Rock Hill District September 2014 Rev. Joe N. Long, Jr., District Superintendent Lollie Haselden, District Secretary 139 Elizabeth Lane, Rock Hill, SC fax NEW District Website Inside this issue: Important Dates and Local District 2-12 Conference LJA/ Asbury Conference UMW When the University of South Carolina and Texas A & M football teams play, the winner is awarded the Governor s Cup Bonham Trophy. James Bonham went as a young graduate of USC to Texas and was a hero at The Alamo. Do you know the story? In 1836 Texas was part of Mexico and fought for independence. A group of less than 200 Texans were defending a mission fort called the Alamo. Over one thousand members of the Mexican army laid siege to the Alamo. Greatly outnumbered, Jams Bonham left to seek reinforcements. When help was denied, he returned to the Alamo. He did this twice. The second time, he returned knowing death was certain. The Alamo was conquered and James Bonham and the other defenders were killed. Remember the Alamo became a rallying cry for Texas. They won their independence. Bonham is remembered for his sacrifice. I share this with you partly because I grew up in Saluda county, as did James Bonham. But, there are two more reasons: James Bonham s pleas for reinforcement fell on deaf ears. How often have we not responded to the desperate pleas of others? Lord, have mercy. James Bonham sacrificed his life for the people and the cause he held dear. We follow Jesus, who gave his life for our salvation and calls us to take up the cross. How do we show self-giving in Jesus s name? I suppose not many will notice the trophy presentation after the USC v. Texas A & M football game. Even fewer will know about the man for which it is named. But be sure of this; God hears the cry of the needy and takes note of every sacrificial act done in His spirit. Joe Fkyers 22-24

These honorees are followed by a long line of dancers who practice and represent all of the dance styles from many tribes in the country. After the procession stops, we honor our country with a Flag Song, our veterans with a Veterans Dance, and we have a word of thanks to the Creator for giving us this day and each other. After the Grand Entry we will have the Friendship Dance. The dancers form a long line while holding hands. Lead dancers lead the dance through various movements and tie the line of dancers into various knots and formations inside the dance arena. Everyone is invited to participate. After the Friendship Dance, the master of ceremonies will call for dancers to dance the various styles of dance and the dancers will twirl, dip and repeat movements that their ancestors did before them. There will be 20+ Native American vendors selling their arts and crafts and several food vendors. Admission: $6.00 for Adults, $3.00 for seniors and children 7-14, children 6 and under are free. 8 Page 8 What is an Emmaus Walk and a Chrysalis Flight? It is a... A Journey with Christ While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and walked with them. - Luke 24:15 The walk to Emmaus is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation that begins with a three-day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with the prayerful discernment and invitation from a sponsor. After one accepts this invitation they complete an application. The Emmaus leaders prayerfully consider each applicant and in God s time, the person is invited to attend a three-day experience of New Testament Christianity as a lifestyle. Following the three-day experience, participants are joined in small groups to support each other in their ongoing walk with Christ. Through the formational process of accountable discipleship in small groups and participation in the Emmaus community, each participant s individual gifts and servant-leadership skills are developed for use in the local church and its mission. Participants are encouraged to find ways to live out their individual call to discipleship in their home, church, and community. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work. Emmaus lifts up a way for our grace-filled lives to be lived and shared with others. Want to learn more? Talk with your minister, or with someone in your church who has taken the Walk to Emmaus, or contact the District Office today!

To take advantage of this offer, make sure you reserve your spot as funds and space are limited. For more information, a schedule of speakers, or to make reservations, visit TheCove.org or call A Great Example in Serving Others Posted on July 14, 2014 by GodSpeaks Team ( More than 15 years have passed since her death, yet Mother Teresa s legacy continues to grow. In addition to inspiring countless acts of charity, she earned the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet this Catholic nun spent most of her 87 years in Calcutta s slums, treating the sick, the dying, and lepers, and caring for orphans and homeless youth. In no time word of her work spread, attracting recruits and charitable donations. As interest spread, so did hospices, orphanages and leper houses across India. By 2012, the Missionaries of Charity she founded in 1963 numbered more than 4,500 Catholic sisters and was active in more than 130 countries. No matter what your faith background or if you check the none box for religious preference you may have known someone like Mother Teresa. Probably in much quieter ways. Like the mother who read you bedtime stories, cooked your meals, and cleaned up the mess when you got the flu. The father or grandfather who raised you, tossed the ball with you, and chased the monsters out of your bedroom. The teacher who made sure you could spell, read and do math. The coach who cared as much about you as a person as your athletic skills. The world will tell you greatness comes from becoming rich and powerful, getting your name etched on a gold plaque, or occupying the corner office in the penthouse suite. Or, running for high political office and achieving the power to rule others lives, appear on national television, and have millions of Twitter followers. Or, being so famous you everyone can identify you by your first name. There is a vast difference between what the world teaches and what Jesus did. Following the world leads you towards a self-centered, me-first lifestyle. In the end, this will leave you feeling empty and alone. Following Jesus philosophy will lead to freedom and fulfillment. The choice is yours. Choose to be truly great. Go and serve others. Find those around you who are hurting, sad, or hungry. Listen to them, help them, and befriend them. You will find fulfillment. A Challenge For You Who has symbolized servant hood in your life? What qualities did this person display that so impressed you? How did he or she inspire you to do the same? Why not call or that individual and tell them? Let s Talk About It: Do you want to know more about how serving others can be so rewarding? We have friends ready on live chat lines to explain why this is God s method to greatness. Connect with people who want to talk with you right now.
