I hope you found and will find the holidays enjoyable. We are indeed fortunate to have had so many of our Brethren step up to help our lodge with the Senior Warden s position. As you recall we have been searching for a Senior Warden off and on for several months and over the last five months there have been there no less than six names submitted to hold this position, in the end there could only be one. At our April Stated Meeting Worshipful Brother Cory De- Martini was elected to serve California Lodge as Senior Warden. I want to thank Worshipful Brothers Craig Holm, John Bermudez and Mel Malang for their continued support of our Lodge. By their efforts our lodge has grown stronger, thank you my brothers. I know we are going to see more of these Worshipful Brothers for some time to come. As for Cory DeMartini, PM what can I say, he is the original You Know guy! WB Cory has been Master of two Lodges and has given much of his time to the Scottish and York Rites as well as the Shrine, not to mention a member of the Asiya Shrine Past Masters Club Third Degree Team. There will be a full Bio and photo from Cory in our June trestle board. I think you will find WB Continued on page 2
2 MAY 2011 PAGE 2 Master s May Message continued from page 1 DeMartini to be a very friendly and easily approachable, feel free to introduce yourself to him. We will install WB DeMartini as Senior Warden, at our May stated meeting. We continue to work our way through the back log of degrees, and we will host two Third Degrees in May and a very special Laymen s Night. I want to personally invite every Entered Apprentices and Fellow Craft member, along with your Lady or guest, to this special evening designed with you in mind. You will receive a letter in the mail and there is a flyer in this Trestle Board. Going forward I have appointed our Junior Warden to be the primary member to receive the Stated Meeting Dinner Reservations. There seems to have been some confusion around this process, and I am confident the process, going forward, will get better. Please see our Junior Warden article for full details. We are putting the finishing touches on the lodge office and it should be up and running by our stated meeting in May. We are receiving Lodge mail there and we are working on a new address and telephone number for the Lodge. As things often go, they never get done as fast as once thought. The Lodge Trip to Italy is a few short weeks away it s going to be a great time and a lot of fun. I will miss seeing you at the June stated meeting, our flight to Barcelona leaves that evening but I know WB Cory and the officers will have everything under control. I think this will be a super opportunity for everyone to get to know our Senior Warden a little better; he will be the guy in charge. Fraternally yours, Richard J. Modolo, PM Master Masons4Mitts Masons & Baseball: A Perfect Partnership The CHALLENGE is back for another year! 3 MAY 2011 PAGE 3 FROM THE SOUTH: May is here, my favorite month, my wife and I were both born in May, I turn 44 on the 27th my wife turns 29 again on the 7th. On May 3rd the lodge will celebrate Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for 5th of May) with a five piece Mariachi band. We will enjoy Chicken Enchiladas served up by our resident Chef Chavez I hear it's an old family recipe and that there may even be homemade Flan for desert. Cinco de Mayo is not a Mexican holiday it is an American Civil War holiday, created spontaneously by Mexicans and Latinos living in, you guessed it, California who supported the fragile cause of defending freedom and democracy during the first years of that bloody War Between the States. I would like to thank the brethren of California Lodge for sending me to the Wardens Retreat; it was three days well spent. I always knew I had a lot to learn but did not realize how much until attending this retreat. I have a head full of information and I am looking forward to putting it all into action. I feel lucky to have established a personal relationship with the Junior Wardens of quite a few lodges in our fine city. It's nice to have Friends in the same job to bounce ideas off of. `God willing in 21 Months California Lodge No. 1 will have a master who is not a Past Master. There is no question in my mind that my involvement in Freemasonry has made me a better man. I figure I have spent roughly 225 Tuesday nights in our Lodge and look forward to many more. Again I want to thank all our members for allowing me to serve them and trust that I will do my best not to let any of you down! Moving forward I am hard at work learning the Senior Wardens work, which is necessary to qualify for advancement. This is the first time in my short Masonic career that I have not been nervous about advancing. San Francisco Chapter Order of DeMolay was lucky to have the Worshipful Garrett Chan's two sons join our chapter; Nick and Garret are a welcome addition. I know know they are going to enjoy becoming a part of the history of being a DeMolay, congratulations Worshipful Brother Garrett. Our Grand Lodge has a strategic plan for 2011; one of the items on their list is "Strengthen Youth Orders". Our Masonic Youth Orders all need some help, be it Job's Daughters, Rainbow Girls or DeMolay with membership and Masonic advisers at the top of the list. If any of you would be interested in helping with any of our youth groups please let me know. The Worshipful John Conlan has secured a place for the 2011 Joint Picnic with San Francisco Lodge; we will be using Henrik Ibsen Park located off Skyline. It s about a 30 minute drive from the Brotherhood Lodge and the park consists of 27 acre s with a nice pool, bring your swimsuits. I heard through the grapevine that out Tyler and Jr Deacon have already scouted the park to stake out a spot for the famous Salami toss. Be sure to take a look at the Permanent Dinner List at the end of this article and see if your name needs to be on it or not. We will soon have a new Lodge telephone with voic , at our new office for you to call and leave a dinner or event reservation. It s a lot easier to plan an event when we have a good idea of who is going to show up. Fraternally yours, Junior Warden Masonic Quiz Answers , Essenes, Pharisees and Sadducees. 4. So called from its proximity to the site of the Temple, the doors of which are said to be covered with gold. It faces the road to Bethany from which Christ made His triumphal entry. The Turks walled it up upon hearing the tradition that through this gate a Conqueror would wrest Jerusalem from them. 5. It is built on the crest of four hills and is at an average elevation of 2500 feet above sea level. The mosque of Omar which stands on the site of Solomon s Temple is the most conspicuous building in the city. Being less than fifty miles from the Dead Sea, which is 1300 feet below sea level, furnishes a good idea of the nature of the country. 6. Julius Caesar was friendly towards the Jews. He appointed Antipater procurator of Judea in 47 B.C., who was poisoned by a political rival in 43 B.C., whereupon his son Herod succeeded to the office. After he had subdued a rebellion, he inaugurated a system of great cruelty, even strangling three of his sons to death. 7. It is generally placed at 4 B.C. He was succeeded by his son Archelaus, who received the title of ethnarch from Augustus. Because of is cruelty he was banished to Gaul. 8. An olive garden, about half an acre of ground on the west side of Mt. Olive commanding a full view of Jerusalem. 9. This word may be translated as signifying most excellent mater. The word appears once as applied t Christ in the New Testament, when Mary turned herself and saith unto him, Rabboni. Which is to say Master.

7 MAY 2011 PAGE 7 California Lodge Trestle Board Youth Orders Article April About six weeks back on Friday, March 18 the Golden Gate Preceptory DeMolay Legion of Honor met with Pacific Star Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, to observe DeMolay Devotional Day, or one of The Seven Obligatory Days recognized by DeMolay. The Seven Obligatory Days are Patriots Day, Devotional Day, Parents Day, My Government Day, Frank S. Land Memorial Day, Day of Comfort and Educational Day. The GGPDLOH meets annually on March 18 and all DeMolay Legion and Honorary Legion of Honor members are welcome to attend. In the past this annual meeting has been a lunch, but in the past few years it has been changed to a dinner. The Legion of Honor Degree (LOH) is the highest Honor conferred by the International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay. The award was approved in 1925 and first conferred upon Louis Lower. Since amendment of the Statutes of the International Supreme Council in 1985, nominees for the DeMolay Legion of Honor must be at least 25 years of age before January 15. The International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay may confer the De- Molay Legion of Honor (LOH) upon a Senior DeMolay for outstanding leadership in some field of endeavor, for service to humanity, or for success in fraternal life, including adult service to the Order of DeMolay. The International Supreme Council may confer it upon a Freemason who was not a DeMolay, but who has performed unusual and meritorious service in behalf of the Order of DeMolay, or who has evidenced a spirit of cooperation and appreciation for the Order of DeMolay, the Honorary Legion of Honor (HLOH). In addition to this on the Sunday nearest to March 18, it is the duty of DeMolay Chapter members to attend church or synagogue/temple as a group at which a special service has been arranged. The religious beliefs and creed of each DeMolay is his own, and he is encouraged to be a devout follower of its teachings. Observance of this day allows for an opportunity to publicly show our reverence of those personal beliefs. Events on this day can include: Reading scripture, Playing the organ/piano, Singing a hymn, Purchasing altar flowers, Giving a flower to each lady present, Providing the refreshments for the social time following a religious service, Assist in your local Sunday School class, Perform the Flower Talk at your local church service, Honor a local Clergy member for their service to the community, Donate a DeMolay Bible to each members family. Brother, Junior Warden has been appointed to be the California Lodge Youth Orders Chairman for If you have a DeMolay, Jobes Daughter or Rainbow Girl article you would like printed in our Trestle Board please forward it on the Brother Gwin.
