1 THE CALIFORNIAN California Lodge No. 1 F & A M 855 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco, CA Stated Meeting Every First Tuesday Of The Month July 2014 Issue Master s Message Greetings Brethren and Ladies! Summer is now well under way, and the first day of this season happened on June 21. And while San Francisco may not get the traditional four seasons, the daylight has been longer. It is temperate all year round though, and I will take that over different seasons any day! As has been the case lately, your officers have been doing degrees every month. We just did 2 more Entered Apprentice degrees, and we will be practicing, then conferring, the 2nd degree of Masonry this month. I hope to see some of you at the practices, and at the actual degree! All of the info for this month is in the trestle board. Speaking of information, on Sunday July 20th, we will be going on a Hornblower Brunch cruise! It's a two hour ride upon a yacht around the Bay with all you can eat and drink included. It's only $25.00 per person, and there is a flyer included with all the details. Space is extremely limited, so get your checks in ASAP! In July we will celebrate the birth of the USA. Many of the ideas and ideals at the formation of this country are also Masonic ideals. Things like freedom of religion and democracy are taken for granted now, but were unheard of before the age of enlightenment. Freemasonry, like the United States, is just that. Free. And it always will be! See you in the lodge. Sean Duke Cassidy, Worshipful Master Calendar of Events for July July 1, Tuesday Stated Meeting 6:00 PM Hosted Hors D Oeuvres 6:30 PM Dinner - $10.00 per person Stated Meeting (Attire Business Suit) July 8, Tuesday 2nd Degree Practice 6:30 pm July 15, Tuesday Off-site Officers Meeting 6:30 pm July 22, Tuesday 2nd Degree Practice 6:30 pm July 29, Tuesday 2nd Degree Conferral for Angelo Vinco, Ron Smith and John Bargas 6:30 pm August 5, Tuesday Stated Meeting 6:00 PM Hosted Hors D Oeuvres 6:30 PM Dinner - $10.00 per person Stated Meeting (Attire Business Suit)
2 PAGE 2 Hello! From The West We re in the second half of this year and why not start it off with a bang! Happy Independence Day everyone! Many of us will soon be taking summer vacations. Some of us will be spending the upcoming long weekend holiday by the lake, camping, barbecuing, or picnicking. Whatever the case may be, I hope every one of you enjoy your time with family and friends and stay safe! With the days being longer and the weather being warm and sunny, it furnishes us plenty of opportunities to go out and enjoy ourselves. Since our lodge will not be dark this month, and some of you will be on vacation, we re still hoping that you would join us in our Stated Meeting and in our Second Degree conferral at the end of this month. We will have three second degrees at the end of this month. Angelo Vinco, Ron Smith, and John Bargas are ready for their Fellowcraft degree. They have made their proficiencies in the preceding degree. I would also like to congratulate our newly obligated brothers, Dion Garcia and Victor Terry! Please join me in welcoming them to California Lodge No.1 and to our ancient and honorable fraternity! I ve learned that a mason is a traveling man. I have been a mason for three and a half years and as I look back on my journey so far, I see all the miles traveled and can see the effect masonry has had on my life. Masonry has made me a better man, friend, father, and husband. I sure do have a long ways to go but I am so thankful for the great start! One of the reasons I have had a great start is having a great coach. He guided me to the correct path to find more Masonic light in my travels. His enthusiasm and passion for masonry helped me find my direction and guided me on a path to discover the wonderful treasures that can be found along this rough and rugged road. As I prepare for my tenure next year, I would like to ask everyone to take a minute of your time to simply me your name to gusgabriel@gmail.com or to our Brother Secretary, Treasurer@calodge1.com, or to any of our officers. By doing so, your address will be automatically added to my address book. Since we live in this " " world now, I would like to gather all addresses from all our members and friends before the end of this year to have a better communication within our lodge for next year and so on (i.e. announcements, lodge events & calendars, etc.). I m looking forward to your s. We will still have our usual trestle board every month. See you at the lodge! ~Senior Warden From The South Hello brethren, For those of you who might have been turned off at the idea of eating dinner in a portable bungalow, you can relax because the dining room is now open! If you haven't been around in a while, please join us for the stated meeting on July 1st and see all the improvements that have been made. Some important dates that you're going to want to put on your calendar are... July 20th - the lodge will be taking a bay cruise on the world famous Hornblower. Grab your sweetheart and prepare for an exhilarating afternoon on the bay that you will never forget, guaranteed to be a non-stop thrill ride. Details for this adventure can be found in the masters column. September 28th is the date for the lodge picnic. Details are soon to follow. Please get your reservations in early because we'd love to have you join in the fun. That is all for now from the south. Take Care Kyler

6 In Memoriaum We are sorry to report the passing of Dell Conlan Wife of John Conlan Dell O. Conlan Soft and Safe to Thee The Story of the Fourth of July The Declaration of IndependenceWe celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4, 1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776). It wasn t the day we started the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775). And it wasn't the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain (that didn't happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed (that was August 2, 1776). So what did happen on July 4, 1776? The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes. July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they remembered. In contrast, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, the anniversary of the date the Constitution was signed, not the anniversary of the date it was approved. If we d followed this same approach for the Declaration of Independence we d being celebrating Independence Day on August 2nd of each year, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed! How did the Fourth of July become a national holiday? For the first 15 or 20 years after the Declaration was written, people didn t celebrate it much on any date. It was too new and too much else was happening in the young nation. By the 1790s, a time of bitter partisan conflicts, the Declaration had become controversial. One party, the Democratic-Republicans, admired Jefferson and the Declaration. But the other party, the Federalists, thought the Declaration was too French and too anti-british, which went against their current policies. By 1817, John Adams complained in a letter that America seemed uninterested in its past. But that would soon change. After the War of 1812, the Federalist party began to come apart and the new parties of the 1820s and 1830s all considered themselves inheritors of Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans. Printed copies of the Declaration began to circulate again, all with the date July 4, 1776, listed at the top. The deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4, 1826, may even have helped to promote the idea of July 4 as an important date to be celebrated. Celebrations of the Fourth of July became more common as the years went on and in 1870, almost a hundred years after the Declaration was written, Congress first declared July 4 to be a national holiday as part of a bill to officially recognize several holidays, including Christmas. Further legislation about national holidays, including July 4, was passed in 1939 and Oak Hill Publishing Company. All rights reserved.
