1 The Wolverine Minute Man Newsletter of the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution # missar.org Winter Dear Fellow Compatriots, Christmas and New Years are busy seasons. The end of the year brings a close of some opportunities and the start of new and more exciting possibilities. The Michigan Sons of the American Revolution is about embarking on some new challenges. Behind the scenes Budget and Finance Committee has met for the proposed budget of Things look more promising than The Fund Raising Committee of the Society has been working on plans for a raffle. These plans should come into fruition in a matter of a week or two. Please read and check often, the web site for all announcements and details of this important money raising activity. The Board of Managers will be meeting in January for approval of budget. Checking the calendar of MISSAR it promises to be a busy year. The April General Membership Meeting will have a Leadership Seminar offered on the state level. This meeting will be on April 17 th in Lansing. I m requesting that each chapter not only send two (2) Members of the Board of Trustees designated for the chapter, but any compatriots that shows any kind of sign of leadership potential. These compatriots should have an interest in chapter office or state office. The conference will offer hints, suggestions and outlines for proper policy, procedure, benefits and governance of the society. The key to our success is participation of chapter members. This is a team effort. This will be important for the society as well as your chapter. Please find a way to participate in your chapter and society activities. Be a party of one. Stand up, be counted. Go to the front of the line. Make a difference in the society. I wish all the Compatriots and their families a Merry Christmas and the Seasons Best. May they and their families be of good health and be safe. Sincerely, Joseph C. Conger President of MISSAR

3 MISSAR FUNDRAISING ANNOUNCEMENT The Fund Raising Committee of the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (MISSAR) has been working on a plan of action, approved at the MIS- SAR Board of Managers meeting in early October, to raise funds so the MIS- SAR can continue to support its patriotic programs in these difficult times. The committee members are MISSAR President Joseph Conger, MISSAR Secretary Jerry Reed Sr., past MISSAR State President and acting Treasurer Don Nutt, Great Lakes District VPG elect and past MISSAR State President Gerald Burkland, Chaplain Bernie Wagers, Past Great Lakes District VPG MISSAR State President and Secretary, Richard Steele, and fundraising chairman Bill Vette. The Committee has developed a three-part plan to raise funds: Initiative #1 Raffle Ticket Sale for the following prizes: First Prize $1, Grand Prize (1) shopping spree at Cabela s; Second Prize $ (1) Third Prize $50.00 (3), Fourth Place $25.00 (6) (Consolation prizes), That s $1, awarded in prizes in ten draws at our April 17, 2010 Annual meeting in Lansing. Tickets will be printed asking for a donation of $5.00 each with the sponsor s names on each ticket. Sponsors would also receive a link from our website to theirs during the months of January- April. There are 24 slots per show for coverage and our intention is to include all Chapters on a voluntary basis. We have slots for sales and recruiting. Each chapter is being asked to select a ticket chairperson as a contact. On December 12, we will be conducting a phone conference to coordinate our plans for the January show, followed by plans for the February show based on the outcome of that phone conference. We have secured booth space at the Ultimate Fishing Show Rock Financial Show Place in Novi on January 7-10, 2010 and Outdoorama Rock Financial Show Place on February 25-28, Currently we have received $1, in donations from Show Span as a sponsor and $ from Cabela s. Our Color Guard and all compatriots from all chapters are invited to participate. Please review these dates on your calendar and contact your chapter president or chapter ticket chairperson and let them know when you would be available to sell tickets at the MISSAR booth. Initiative #2 Our Small Business/Corporation $200 Donation Initiative 3 Our goal is to involve small Businesses /Corporations in our $ donation initiative. We currently have four donors, two recruited from the River Raisin Chapter, one from the Oaks Chapter, and one from Paul Emery Chapter at $ each. The Fundraising Committee would like to encourage the other chapters to try to recruit at least one small business/ corporation from their area. Every one of the 326 MIS- SAR society members knows someone personally who owns or operates a small Business/Corporation. It is possible that some Compatriots own a small Business/ Corporation themselves and may want to become a sponsor. Initiative#3 Sell the Mission not just the ticket! The fundraiser will provide the MISSAR the opportunity to sell our mission-- not just a ticket. Our goal is to take donations for tickets, but also to promote our organization. Let people know who we are, what we do, and how they can become involved. We intend to do this with flyers, banners, and compatriots speaking directly to people we come in contact with. Telling people it s for a good cause drops the ball. Using these opportunities to connect to our ticket buyers to the mission of the Sons of The American Revolution is important. (Share our vision). We want to reach out and have the patrons remember the Sons of The American Revolution. December 5 th planning meeting in Lansing On December 5 th at 12:00P.M., the fundraising steering committee, along with the Chapter Presidents, or their representatives met to finalize plans and assignments Tickets will be printed, and during the month of December will be distributed to each chapter. The goal of the Fund Raising Committee is to have all planning completed by the end of the year. Our booth space at each show is 10x10 feet square. President Conger has volunteered to coordinate the booth displays. Color Guard will be in uniforms, with handouts, team members will have custom aprons, with a backdrop of flags. The key to our success is participation of chapter members. This is a team effort. This will be important for the society as well as your chapter. Please find a way to participate through sales at the venue, corporate sponsorship or just be a super sales person, selling tickets from January through April! Bill Vette, Chairman of the Fund Raising Committee of the MISSAR.

Wagers *********************************** NEWS FROM RIVER RAISIN CHAPTER September 17, 2009 The River Raisin Chapter SAR conducted a regular chapter meeting in Adrian. After enjoying a meal of fellowship RRC Compatriot Bill Vette gave a talk about the Commander-in-Chief's Guard, commonly known as Washington's Life Guard. This was a unit of the Continental Army that protected George Washington, as well as the money and official papers of the Continental Army, during the American Revolutionary War. Formed in March 1776, the Guard was with General Washington in all of his battles. It was disbanded in 1783 at the end of the war. Compatriot Vette had studied his topic in great depth and his presentation was informative and well done. November 19, 2009 The River Raisin Chapter SAR conducted a regular chapter meeting in Adrian. Stephen Trammell, a Compatriot from the Tennessee Society SAR spoke about his patriot ancestor Captain Dennis Trammell of the South Carolina Line and his service in the southern campaign. He also showed photos, newspaper clippings, etc., of an incredibly successful grave rededication ceremony in Scott County, Tennessee, for his patriot. The local newspapers in Scott County declared the event the largest ever of its kind. The even was entirely organized and funded by Compatriot Stephen Trammell. November 21, 2009 Compatriots of the River Raisin Chapter accepted a gracious invitation from Lenawee County s Lucy Wolcott Barnum Chapter DAR, Mrs. Tom (Kay) Williams, Regent, to meet with them at 12 noon Saturday, November 21, 2009, for a luncheon and to hear a special speaker. A splendid lunch, furnished by the DAR ladies, was enjoyed by the RRC Compatriots. After the meal and fellowship Mrs. Melanie Jillson, Budget Analyst at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, informed the group all about the National Cemetery. Did you know the cemetery at Holly conducts an average of ten burial services each and every business day of the year? and has had as many as twenty in a single day. She was an impressive speaker. The next meeting of the River Raisin Chapter SAR will be 21 January 2010 in Adrian. Contact Chapter Secretary Doug Leffler for details. (517) or dougnleffler@yahoo.com. Submitted by Don Nutt ***************************************** See Chapter newsletters that are published on the missar.org website for information on the Oaks and Huron Valley Chapters. ****************************************** Transition. Submitted by: Compatriot Jerry W. Reed, Sr. Secretary Michigan SAR ****************************************** 2010 ANNUAL DUES The SAR annual dues notices were mailed to all Compatriots in the Michigan Society SAR on September 1. As of December 1 State Secretary Jerry Reed reports he has only received 70% of our member s dues payments. This means nearly 100 Compatriots have yet to pay their annual dues for calendar year If you have not yet send payment, please do so as soon as possible so Secretary Reed may receive your payment before the end of December. The National Society s bylaws require each State Society to submit a list on January 1 of Compatriots who have not paid their annual dues. These Compatriots are promptly removed from the active rolls of the SAR. For those Compatriots who have been dropped from the rolls in previous years for nonpayment of dues, they frequently ask what they have to do to become a member in good standing again. It is very easy simply pay the current year dues amount and you will be reinstated to membership and active status. It is not required that you pay back dues for missed years, and there is no reinstatement fee. It couldn t be easier! The 2010 SAR annual dues amount is $60. This breaks down to $30 for National Society, $22 for Michigan Society, and $8 for your Chapter. Dues payments may be made by check or money order and should be mailed to Compatriot Jerry W. Reed Sr., MISSAR Secretary, 7780 Saint Andrews Dr., Tecumseh, MI Greetings Compatriots. I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May your holiday season be a safe one. It is now almost midnight on the 16 th of December. I am already a day late getting the WMM ready to publish. Please accept my apologies. I had to stop working on the WMM for a little while to complete the planning for the Fundraising Raffle. As many of you know, in these difficult times the MISSAR is struggling to meet its obligations to the many patriot projects it engages in. The MISSAR Finance Committee has been struggling to find ways to fund its youth award programs since no one wanted to terminate them. It was decided at the October BOM meeting that a raffle would be conducted in an attempt to ward off any cuts in the MISSAR budget. The Fundraising Committee, led by compatriot Bill Vette, has come up with a workable plan (see page three of the WMM). With all Compatriots working together much can be accomplished. On Sept 19, 2009, Keith Kaufman, President of the Hocking Valley Chapter of the Ohio Society, invited Compatriot Burkland and me to participate in a grave rededication they were holding. We had a great time and really appreciated Compatriot Kaufman s hospitality. One of the Oaks Chapter members who braved the heavy downpour at the August Oaks Chapter picnic was Compatriot Hubert Smith. Compatriot Smith only joined the SAR a couple of years ago, at the age of 95, but was a real supporter of the Society. He will be greatly missed by all of us who knew him. In late September Compatriot Burkland and I traveled to Louisville to attend the fall Leadership/Trustee conference. On Thursday afternoon, September 24, we attended the formal dedication of the Center for Advancing America s Heritage. The potential for using this building to advance the causes the SAR supports is huge. Read the current SAR magazine to see some of the plans the President General and his staff are exploring for uses of the building. That s about all for now. Chapter secretaries please send me chapter activities by the end of February. Until then.. May the Lord bless you and keep you safe.
