A Publication of First Christian Church of the Beaches (Disciples of Christ) ISSUE JULY 2018 Instilling the Meaning of Independence Day David Crowe What does the Fourth of July mean to contemporary Americans? For many it means a day off from work and little more. To others it means an opportunity to "party," roast hot dogs, drink beer and watch fireworks. THIS ISSUE: INSTILLING THE MEANING OF INDEPENDENCE DAY remember this Independence Day that our freedoms spring from the love of God. ELDER S CORNER Grandmothers 4th of July MISSION MOMENT Back to School with BEAM RUMMAGE SALE It s back. Mark your calendars for August 11 th! TEENS SUMMER CAMP Grades 7th-12th July 16 - July 20 THE WAVERIDER Please see the Waverider section for Youth and Children s events But to the Founders of our nation, it meant far more. Upon the completion of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Adams, known as the "Father of the American Revolution" said, "We have this day restored to Sovereign to Whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His Kingdom come." Adams was a man of no small stature in the colonies. His views are widely known, and he was not a closet Christian. He formed the Committees of Correspondence that unified the colonists preceding the Revolution; signed the Declaration of Independence; and served as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Massachusetts. It was Adam's view that in declaring their independence from Great Britain, the colonists were placing themselves under the only true "sovereign", the King of Kings and the LORD of lords. Adams believed that as God "reigns in Heaven" it was His desire to further His Kingdom in the New World "from the rising to the setting of the sun." To John Adams, Independence Day was to be remembered as a "Day of Deliverance" from the control and oppression of tyrants, and it should be marked by acts of devotion to the God who delivers! To Sam Adams, and to his cousin John, the spiritual implications were significant. As God, the author of our liberty has "declared" us free from the power, dictates and cruel authority of the arch "tyrant", the colonists were declaring themselves "free" to serve the King of Kings, and not an earthly tyrant. Their understanding of the event was theologically based, in a desire to serve the only true "sovereign", Christ Himself. While we celebrate "Independence" this Fourth of July, remember that the greatness of America is knowing that our liberty comes from Him who died for us, and that our "freedoms" spring from the love of God.

Elder s Corner by Pam Mangine MY GRANDMOTHER S FOURTH OF JULY Big crowds of family and friends, fried chicken, salads, watermelon, and always homemade ice cream. YUM. We would visit, play games and end up watching the fireworks. After would be a history lesson with my grandmother telling us the facts about July 4 th or Independence Day, the beginning of our Nation. What a story!!! She told us that freedom was not free and there was a lot of blood has been shed over time. She would always end the lesson with the story of the gospel. That the blood shed by Jesus the Christ gave us our most precious freedom, our sins were paid in full. Thank you Mama Pat. Hope this Fourth of July finds you enjoying family/friends, good eats and remembering the principles that our country was founded under. 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the spirit; and where the spirit of the lord is, there is freedom. GOD BLESS AMERICA Notes from Nancy by Nancy Barrett It's always a good feeling to sing patriotic songs that celebrate God and our country. July 1 st we will sing BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC and July 8 th we will sing an arrangement of AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL. We will follow those songs with, I WILL SING TO THE LORD FOREVER on July 15 th and JOY IN THE MORNING on July 22 nd. We will be blessed July 29 by our guest soloist, Ms. Toni Wortherly. You will remember hearing Ms. Wortherly sing during our gospel concert. She is the choir director at New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Atlantic Beach.

Library Tides Linda White & Assistant Geno Valet Here are little blurbs on more books you can check out from your library at First Christian Church of the Beaches: On the Biography shelf: THE FLAME KEEPERS - - A vivid first-hand account of a Christian American soldier's experience as a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany and a poignant portrait of the POWs who worked to survive within the wire and their German captors. Illustrated with original photographs taken inside the camp from a smuggled camera and published for the first time in the trade press, The Flame Keepers recounts one of World War II's great untold stories. On the Revelation shelf: WHEN CHRIST COMES - - Would you like to know more about the end of time? Max Lucado believes the day Christ comes will be the "beginning of the very best." Our primary task is to be prepared and peaceful while we wait. There is much about the end of history we don't understand. But while thoughts on the final day will stir our questions, they needn't stir our fears. Regarding that day, Jesus urged, "Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me" (John 14:1). On the History shelf: SEARCHING FOR THE ARK OF THE COVENANT - - Noted researcher and popular speaker Randall Price explores the Ark s mysterious past, its explosive significance today, and its pivotal role in the end times. Exclusive photographs and charts, interviews with leading Middle East authorities, and years of meticulous research provide a factual inside view of one of history s most fascinating quests. From the moment I picked up your book until I put it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it. Groucho Marx Sweet Sleep Project Many of you signed the pillow cases decorated by our Teens and prayed for those who received them. We are now ready to take orders for more pillowcases. If you know someone who has a chronic condition or is facing a long-term recovery and would like for them to receive a pillow case that has been prayed over, please contact Rita Vernon or any member of the Prayer Ministry. We will need their name, brief description or name of their condition, and a street address for delivery if they are in the area. If they are not in the area will be need a mailing address. Pillow cases that are ready to be prayer over will be in the fellowship hall at a table that has a balloon attached. Watch for it! We encourage all to pray over and sign the pillow cases.

Stewardship News by John Campbell New Endowment Legacy Builders Program The FCCB Endowment Fund Stewards, who were elected by the congregation last December, are happy to announce the launch of our new Endowment Legacy Builders Program. The primary purpose of the program is to expand the witness and mission of Jesus Christ in the world, serving human needs in our community and around the world. It is not intended to compete with the regular annual giving of members or to diminish the opportunities for responsible stewardship by present or future members. The new program is expected to allow 4% of the annual fund balance (currently $103,000) to be used as follows: Missions (50%), Buildings & Grounds (40%) and Ministry-Related Student Scholarships (10%). Our Disciples Christian Church Foundation in Indianapolis will be investing our funds in a portfolio called the Beasley Growth Fund. The fund is made up of a combination of domestic and international equities and fixed income investments. The fund s average investment return since inception in December 1985 has been 9.0%. More information about this exciting new program will be coming out over the coming months. If you have any immediate questions or would like to sign-up as a Legacy Builder please contact one of your Endowment Fund Stewards: John Campbell, Tracye Hawkins, Jack Morison, Sylvia Osewalt or Don Peters. Senior Adult Ministry by Pat Hernandez Our last meeting for this part of the year was on June 7, We had our Annual Cook-out at the Cypress Village Dock. The rain held off and all who were present enjoyed delicious hamburgers, homemade casseroles, and Pastor Nathan's good news and Madeline Grader's interesting devotion. We have been busy this year. We have learned about the myths and facts about Hospice, we visited Peru, through the interesting pictures Lyle and Sharon shared with us, we sat back and enjoyed the pizza, Chuck and Phyllis had ordered for us, instead of having to cook something. Some us have been busy helping the Seniors on a Mission, for example putting together invitations for the First Coast Woman's Organization. Some of us attending the Sr. Retreat in Silver Springs, which is an event that has been going on for several years, and we have had Nancy Avera back again for some very exciting stories. In May, we were guests at the Cypress Village Banquet Hall and were served a delicious lunch with our friend, Bess Turk, who gave us her family s history. I might mention, we have had some very interesting programs, given also by our own members and there is always something to enjoy when we all get together, including memorable devotions. To end this first part of our year, our last trip was to the Recycle Plant, which was an informative trip. Our projected contribution will be for the Youth Camp in July, a well-deserved function. For Pastor Nathan's topic, of all the good news will be listed in our upcoming Tidal Wave. Be sure and look for all the wonderful things that have been happening at First Christian Church of the Beaches. Don't forget to put our next S.A.M. meeting on your calendar for September 6, 2018, in the large fellowship hall at 10:30 a.m. Our program will be given by Paul Robbins on the export business. Knowing Paul, he will have a lot of operational business news about his career. Please come and support Paul.

As usual, please bring your favorite casserole, salad, dessert, or rolls to share. Blessings, Pat Art Wall by Barre Barrett The new Show by Dr. S Barre Barrett was installed on the Art Wall on Wednesday, June 6 th for viewing that evening and on Sunday June 10 th. Dr. Barrett will be exhibiting four or five recent acrylic paintings on canvas. The works are primarily abstract, and viewers may use the titles and his artist's statement as a way of thinking and enjoying the works. The show will remain on display through Wednesday, August 29 th. The Crochet Group by Connie Wendt Now that Wednesday dinners are finished for the summer, we still will be crocheting at home. We need scarves for the December dinner and for the Cold Night Shelters. We would appreciate any help you can give us. Look forward to seeing some new folks joining us in the fall when dinners start up again! If you need to bone up on you crocheting or knitting, come and sit in when we start back up. We will help you, OR YOU can help us!!! Youth Building Update by Rita Vernon The Jacksonville Beach Board of Adjustment denied our variance request, so we are looking at different options. The committee is in contact with an architect about working with us. An interior design committee has been established. The members are: Kathy Clarson, Chris Hopkins, Alex Ertel, Christian Giles, Paul Robbins, Ashlee Loewen, Greg Nelson, Jake Young, Alex Hopkins and Ric Clarson. As always, we ask for your prayers that we will be in tune with God so that this building will meet the needs for what he has in store for us both now and in the future. The FCCB Trustees have decided effective Monday, December 25, 2017, First Christian Church of the Beaches will be a SMOKE FREE CAMPUS. This means that all smoking is prohibited on CHURCH PROPERTY. Please extinguish your cigarette, cigar or vape before you leave your vehicle. Please respect this new policy, as it is set in place to protect the lungs of our most vulnerable: kids and elderly.
