2 UTAH BASKETBALL H E R E S U T A H NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011 Utah Athletics History The latest chapter in Ute athletics history began on July 1, 2011, when Utah officially became a member of the Pac-12 Conference. But Utah s reputation as an athletics power was established long before it joined the Conference of Champions. TWO NO. 1 PICKS IN THE SAME YEAR Utah made NCAA history in when it became the only school ever to produce a No. 1 NFL and NBA draft pick in the same year. Quarterback Alex Smith was taken by the San Francisco 49ers and center Andrew Bogut went to the Milwaukee Bucks. Football entered its 118th season with a record. In the mid-1990s, the Utes evolved from a conference contender to a national force and they now play to sold-out crowds in 45,017-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium. The original BCS Buster, Utah is 2-0 in BCS bowl games with wins over Alabama (2009 Sugar Bowl) and Pittsburgh (2005 Fiesta Bowl). The Utes won nine consecutive bowl games from , tying for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history and the longest since Florida State won a record 11 straight from Utah has finished in the nation s Top 25 six times, including a No. 2 ranking in 2008 and a No. 4 finish in Men s Basketball has thrived throughout its history, winning an NCAA Championship in 1944 and finishing as the NCAA runner-up in Utah, which also won national championships in 1916 (AAU) and 1947 (NIT), has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 nine times. The Utes rank 12th in the nation in all-time victories (1,670), tied for 13th in winning percentage (64.6%), and are in the top 10 in conference titles (32). Utah s 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 NCAA Tournament wins rate among the top 25 programs. Women s Gymnastics boasts 10 national championships and eight runner-up finishes. Utah is the only school to qualify for all 31 NCAA Gymnastics Championships and leads the nation in Super Six appearances with 18. One of the best attended women s sports in NCAA history, the Ute gymnasts have drawn over 11,000 fans a meet for the past 22 years and were the attendance leader for all women s sports in 2010 and Women s Basketball has averaged over 20 wins a season since its start back in The program is ranked ninth all-time in NCAA history with a.708 winning percentage. The Ute women have received 17 NCAA Tournament invites since 1982 advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. They have won 22 conference championships. The Men s and Women s Ski Team has captured 10 NCAA Championships, including five in the 1980s and three in the 1990s. Volleyball has participated in 10 of the last 14 NCAA Tournaments with two Sweet 16 finishes. Softball has qualified for the postseason 18 times (13 NCAA) and has five College World Series appearances (four NCAA). Women s Soccer has played in the NCAA Tournament in five of the last 10 years. Baseball won the 2009 Mountain West Conference tournament and claimed two victories at the NCAA Regional. The lowest point within city boundaries is 4,210 feet near the Great Salt Lake, and the highest is Grandview Peak at 9,410 feet. The Great Salt Lake (48 miles wide and 90 miles long) is the world s second largest saltwater lake and the largest lake in the western United States. The city is the cultural, financial, educational, technological, commercial and communications hub of the Intermountain West. Utah was named the most technologically advanced state in the 2008 Digital States Survey and rated as one of the top 10 most socially networked cities in America. Salt Lake is also home to world-renowned medical and technology industries. Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. The U., which has earned a top-tier ranking from the Academic Ranking of World Universities for eight consecutive years, became a member of the Pac-12 Conference on July 1, TOP 25 IN RESEARCH Utah ranks among the top 25 public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering. Founded in 1850, the University of Utah encompasses 1,500 acres in the foothills of the towering Wasatch Mountains. 6 UTAH BASKETBALL H E R E S U T A H Jon M. Huntsman Center Regarded as one of the top college basketball arenas in the nation since opening its doors in 1969, the Jon M. Huntsman Center has provided an imposing home court advantage for Utah basketball for more than four decades. For a structure that is in its 43rd year of existence, a feeling of newness still pervades underneath the silver dome. The Utah women have posted an imposing mark in the facility (an.866 winning percentage). The Utes have had nine seasons without a loss at the Huntsman Center, and posted a 28-game home winning streak that lasted from Jan. 12, 1995 to Feb. 8, When the string of victories ended, it was the third-best home court winning streak in the nation. The building, a landmark on the U. campus, is the perfect place to watch a basketball game. A great view is assured from each of the 15,000 chair seats, making it the largest arena in the Pac-12. Inside Sports recognized the Huntsman Center s superiority by naming it one of the top five collegiate arenas in the nation. Bill Cosby was the first performer in the Huntsman Center (formerly the Special Events Center). In 1979, the building played host to the NCAA Basketball Championship the Final Four dream match featuring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Men s NCAA regional tournaments were held in the Huntsman Center in 1984, 85, and 87. The NCAA first and second rounds took place in the arena 13 times from 1984 to The JMHC is in second place among the nation s arenas for most NCAA Tournament basketball games hosted, with 81 contests having been played in the facility. The 2001 women s NCAA first and second rounds were played in the Huntsman Center, marking a first for Utah. The women s tournament returned to Utah in 2011 with the first and second rounds. The Huntsman Center has also served as home to nine national gymnastics championships most recently in The Utes hosted the NCAA gymnastics regionals in 2001, 2003 and 2010, and hosted the Pac-12 championship in A new scoreboard was installed at the start of the season. It has four LCD video screens. Adorning the bottom of the scoreboard is an LED ring by Optotech. The floor in the Huntsman Center was most recently replaced in M E D I A G U I D E
