3 54 foot tall climbing wall 18,000 pounds of weights A VIBRANT NEW PART OF THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE More than a decade ago, the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) partnered with University administrators to begin a conversation around the vision for a Student Life Center. The idea immediately caught on and a student survey showed broad support for the project. Staff and faculty loved the idea, too, and students expressed support for an increase in their student fees to help fund the building. Although it took a couple of years, the Utah State Legislature eventually gave its blessing for the University to bond for the facility. At the same time, students and administration pursued the necessary private funding to launch the project. With the revenue bond approved (to be paid through the student fee) and with the generous commitment of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and other donors, design work began and a contractor was retained. A groundbreaking was held in the spring of 2013 and today the state-of-the-art George S. Eccles Student Life Center is already becoming the campus gathering place, with an average of 3500 visits to the building on a daily basis. The commitment of U students and the generosity of private donors has created one of the finest student life centers in the nation a gift that will enrich the lives of U students for generations to come. 420,000 gallons of water 155 cardio machines To all our partners those who have contributed gifts of their energy, talents, time and dollars to this building we thank you for your investment in the students of the University of Utah.

4 GEORGE S. ECCLES The University of Utah is proud to honor the legacy of George S. Eccles ( ) through the naming of the new student life center. The George S. Eccles Student Life Center recognizes not only the generous lead gift for the new center from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, but also George s own long-standing interest and participation in sports of many kinds, and his contagious enthusiasm that encouraged others to share his love of outdoor recreation. A son of pioneering Utah industrialist David Eccles and his wife, Ellen Stoddard Eccles, George grew up in Logan, Utah. While he began his college education in his hometown at Utah State University, he later moved to New York City where he completed his degree at Columbia University School of Business in George Eccles was CEO of First Security Corporation from , and a leading figure in the banking industry in Utah and the nation for more than four decades. An active and generous civic leader and major benefactor, his charitable works and interests continue today through his foundation. The support of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation has enriched innumerable areas of the University of Utah, including other sports-related entities such as the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, Rice-Eccles Stadium, and Ute football, basketball, skiing and tennis programs, among others. The Eccles were sports enthusiasts and athletes who loved skiing, skating, swimming, tennis and golf, as well as other outdoor activities. They were involved in Utah s earliest efforts to bring the Olympics to the state, and the support of their foundation was vital to the overall success of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Utah. The George S. Eccles Student Life Center will foster student success and achievement for decades to come by providing a state-of-the-art venue to enrich healthy bodies and minds, promote active lifestyles, and foster the spirit of camaraderie and competition that the Eccles so enjoyed. 7 Campus Recreation Services (CRS), part of the U s Division of Student Affairs, enriches the student experience through active engagement, educational enrichment and the development of lifelong recreational pursuits. The CRS staff (13 full-time professionals and 140 student employees) operates the George S. Eccles Student Life Center and manages a fitness program, intramural sports, sport clubs, and the Outdoor Adventures program. Special thanks to Mary Bohlig, director, and the dedicated CRS team for bringing to life the vision for the Eccles Student Life Center.
