2 Deseret Gymnasium Records Deseret Gymnasium Records, Scope and Content Collection includes scrapbooks, miscellaneous papers, and photographs. The scrapbooks contain photographs, letters, memorabilia, and newspaper clippings compiled to document the history of the Deseret Gymnasium from its opening until The first volume includes letters signed by Hyrum M. Smith, Bryant S. Hinckley, and Heber J. Grant. The papers include reports and some correspondence relative to building and use of the facility. Photographs include views of many athletic activities involving men and women at the gym. Images of note include several early pictures depicting athletics in Utah involving Latter-Day Saints' University, the University of Utah, and Salt Lake High School. There is also a photograph of the Blackfoot High School basketball team in 1908 and views of Heber J. Grant, Joseph Fielding Smith, Ab Jenkins, and boxer Jack Dempsey. Biographical Note The Deseret Gymnasium was built in 1910 under the auspices of the Church to promote physical education. Bryant S. Hinckley served as executive secretary of the gym, The original gymnasium was torn down in 1961 and replaced by a new structure in Extent 10 reels 12 bx. 10 reels 12 bx.
