2 Job Description for Pastoral Ministry at Calvary Lutheran - St. Paul s Episcopal, Elk Rapids, MI The Desired Candidate Will: Preside at Worship and administer the Sacraments according to the practice of the Evangelical Lutheran and Episcopal Churches. Attend Council and Vestry meetings and other meetings as mutually agreed to be necessary, not to exceed 10 hours per week. Provide pastoral care (visitation, instruction, marriage, funerals) to all members of the parish according to their needs by either clergy or lay assistants. Assist with the ongoing transition of the two churches partnership. Represent us in the community. Have access to a cell phone, computers, phone, office space and the facilities and equipment of each church. Have access to a Discretionary Fund. Calvary - St. Paul s will: Offer compensation in the maximum amount of $25,000 per year for a work week not to exceed 20 hours. Mileage at the current rate and overnight accommodations, when mutually agreed to in the event of activities or ministry requirements. Accept the candidate, uphold him/her in prayer, and accord him/her love, respect and good will. 2

3 St. Paul's, the oldest church in the Traverse Episcopal Deanery, was founded August 29, 1867, as the Church of the Covenant under the direction of The Rev. Henry Brown of Alpena. In 1869 The Rev. Albert Lewis came to Elk Rapids as Rector and for 11 years held services in the county courtroom and traveled a circuit around Grand Traverse Bay by steamer. Renamed St. Paul's, the parish was admitted in union with the Diocese of Western Michigan in June 7, In 1880 land was donated for a church building and work began on the present structure. Services have been held here continuously since Bishop George Gillespie conducted the first ones on June 21, The handsome white board and batten structure is an exemplary expression of American Gothic church architecture. The church's style and character were carefully preserved when the building was extensively remodeled in 1995, including installation of an elevator for handicap-accessibility. Today's vibrant, active, family-oriented congregation hails from a wide area of Northern Michigan and includes many snowbirds and long time summer cottagers as well as year-round residents.

4 Calvary Lutheran began as the "Norsk Evangelisk Luthersk Kirke" when Norwegian immigrants came to this area in the middle of the 19th century to work in the lumbering and iron smelting industries which fueled the establishment of Elk Rapids. The congregation's first efforts were in cooperation with congregations in Suttons Bay, Good Harbor, Northport, Frankfort, Leland, East Jordan and Empire. The congregation was officially incorporated in January, Agreement and discord seem to have existed in equal measure over subsequent years, but the congregation persevered. When mergers of various Lutheran bodies in North America culminated in the American Lutheran Church in 1960, this congregation dropped its ethnic designation and became Calvary Lutheran. Two years later, work began on a new building enjoying the visibility and accessibility of property on the new U.S. highway passing through the village. The bell which graced the old church was installed in the tower of the new building and the old building has since become a private residence. A major remodeling project was completed in 1997 and Calvary is now home to many community events and organizations. 4

First Presbyterian Church has an active youth program in addition to hosting a local Boy Scout Troop. There is an Ecumenical group for local church clergy. The following collage of photos shows some of Calvary s and St. Paul s joint Outreach Projects, which includes a Back-to-School and Coats & Boots Program for children referred to us by schools and community service groups, a Christmas Party for the North Country Community Mental Health participants, Diapers and Quilts program, a replacement truck for ACTS Pantry & Thrift Store, funds for the Flint Water Crisis, and a sizable donation to the Cowell Family Cancer Care Building at Munson Hospital in Traverse City. We have over 150 years of history and are able to access all the benefits of living on Lake Michigan and the plethora of inland lakes. A thirty minute drive can take you to the county seat, Bellaire, or to Traverse City, home of Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse Symphony Orchestra, Cherry Capital Airport, library, cultural events, shopping malls, Munson Medical Center, a highly rated hospital, and a bustling downtown business district. The village of Elk Rapids is a relatively small community of about 1,700 residents located at the mouth of the Elk River Chain of Lakes. Our local economy is based on agriculture, tourism, and retirement incomes. The schools and churches draw people from a much larger metropolitan region around Elk Rapids. 6

7 Recreational Opportunities The Greater Elk Rapids Area offers an abundance of recreational opportunities. Depending on the season there are places to swim, kayak, camp, hike, fish, sunbathe, bike, snowmobile, ski, hunt, and play golf and tennis, and picnic with friends and family. One of Elk Rapids treasures is the beautiful Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor, which rates as one of the state's best and safest. Minor league professional baseball is offered in nearby Traverse City, the Beach Bums, an exciting team to watch. Downtown is alive in the summer at Wednesday Night Live on River Street where people enjoy live music, food, children s activities and more. Small Town Atmosphere Elk Rapids is a small town with much to offer. This includes active Rotary, Lions, Masonic Lodge, Amvets, and American Legion organizations. Our community chorus and local theater group give wellattended performances. There are pharmacies, medical clinics, dentists, banks, a historical museum, a quaint retrorenovated movie theater, an excellent library, and a historic town hall available for rent. Fire, police, and ambulance service, all located in the village, provide quick response to emergencies. Elk Rapids offers several art galleries, an art park, and many well-known restaurants. 7

The Elk Rapids Schools Elk Rapids Schools are a school-of-choice for many families within the metropolitan area, but outside the school district primarily because of the excellence of the academic and extracurricular programs. One of the distinguishing academic programs is their participation and certification in the International Baccalaureate program, which systematically prepares students for the future in a manner similar to some of the most progressive schools in the nation and internationally. Typically about 85 to 105 students graduate from Elk Rapids High School every year. In addition to a full roster of athletic programs that appeal to both young men and women, students are also encouraged to participate in various other learning programs such as debate, music, honor society, Interact community service, and Odyssey of the Mind. The schools (K-12) are growing various robotics programs in ways that reinforce the applications of their STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math).
