2 Kabbalah4All Transliteration Guidelines Please note that transliteration guidelines are different according to each culture and also within each movement of Judaism. We have developed these guidelines for use with our transliterated documents. They may or may not apply to transliterations put out by other movements including the various organizations teaching Kabbalah. a ai e ei i o oy u ch g tz as in father as in aisle as in red as in eight as in pizza as in no as in toy as in tune as in Bach in German (strong sound from the throat) as in give as in lots typically adds an EH sound after a consonant, this is known as a Shva Na or pronounced Shva as in the word Sh ma. - a dash is simply used to aid in pronounciation, usually if two like vowels follow each other, as in the word da-at. In Hebrew, the accent generally falls on the last syllable, however it sometimes falls somewhere else in the word. In our transliteration, when the syllable falls somewhere else other than the last syllable, that stressed syllable will be underlined. Example: Melech. Hebrew Rules The following are some of the Hebrew rules you may notice in our siddurim (connection books). Kj l«n lç k In Hebrew, the accent generally falls on the last syllable, however it sometimes falls somewhere else in the word. Whenever a syllable other than the last is accented, a meteg (the vertical line under the first letter) will appear. The masoret above the letter Chaf indicates that this is a Kamatz Katan, which is pronounced as o ; in this example the word is kol. Egœ n U i The rafe above a letter indicates it is a Shva Na. This example is pronounced yism chu. Note that the rafe does not appear above the first letter of a word that has a Shva as that is ALWAYS a Shva Na. Please do not publish or distribute without permission. All prefaces to prayers written and adapted by David Aharon for Kabbalah4All. Translated by David Aharon. Edited by David Aharon. 3 TU B SHEVAT SEDER haya eh ubsb vu ]vqyt rdc PREPARATIONS FOR THE SEDER Seder means order and in this case, it is a meal which is used as a connection tool to the energy of Tu B Shevat. Since it is a meal, it s appropriate to invite over family and friends to join in the festivities. This seder is designed to taste and connect to the Four Worlds of the soul. We do this by tasting various fruits. It is recommended that each person eat a little of each, so for example you may only need one of certain items since you can cut them up and put them on the plates for each person. You will need the following items for the seder: Yahrtzeit (Memorial) Candle when seder is held on a weeknight or Two Shabbat Candles when seder is held on a Friday night. White Wine or White Grape Juice Red Wine or Red Grape Juice Challah or Matzah Basin/Pitcher For Handwashing Kiddush Cup or Wine Glasses You should only use the Kiddush cup if you are the only one at your location celebrating via conference call. 1 Appetizer Plates (per person) If you are having more than 3-4 people at your table, you may wish to put the fruits on separate plates and pass those plates around to everyone during the appropriate section of the seder. Fruits For The First Plate - You will need each of the following fruits: an orange (tangerine, tangelo, clementine) and an apple (or pear), and figs. Fruits For The Second Plate - You will need each of the following fruits: olives (preferably with seed) and dates (preferably with seed). Fruits For The Third Plate - You will need each of the following fruits: pomegranate, almonds, and pistachios. 3

4 TU B SHEVAT SEDER haya eh oewiz xcq ABOUT TU B SHEVAT The Talmud calls Tu B Shevat, Rosh HaShanah La-Ilanot or the New Year s Day for the Trees. It was a day of gratitude for the fruits in the land of Israel. The Kabbalists of Tz fat taught that it is a spiritual and mystical Rosh Hashanah for us. The Mishnah refers to it as Tree instead of Trees which refers to the original Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden. We celebrate Tu B Shevat with a Kabbalistic seder which reveals the deepest Kabbalistic secrets of Creation. Adam and Eve were supposed to enjoy the fruits of the garden as part of their service to the Creator. They were supposed to receive pleasure as a gift from the Eternal One just as we should. There is a big difference in receiving pleasure and in having pleasure. Having pleasure we need no one and only our ego is gratified. Receiving pleasure, on the other hand, comes from our soul s desire to connect to the Light. They followed the desires of their own egos and ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and thus had pleasure rather than received it. Kabbalah teaches us that one reason we are here is for the sake of tikune (correction). Blessing and eating fruits on Tu B Shevat is our attempt to connect to the Light and correct the mistake made by Adam and Eve. We hope to receive pleasure that comes from the Creator and not have pleasure that just gratifies our ego. tvrnh tqldh LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES We light the candles of Tu B Shevat in order to draw the spiritual Light into our personal lives. The candles remind us that this is a sacred time, and that this time is set apart for us to connect to the Light and to one another. 5 TU B SHEVAT SEDER haya eh oewiz xcq,ydy tlyun WASHING OF THE HANDS We should wash our hands before we do any sort of connection or meditation. Kabbalah teaches that our hands are magnets for negative energy. Water washes away those negative energies, thereby purifying our hands so that through them we may receive the positive energy obtained through our connection. Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam, Eternal One, Sovereign of the universe. asher kid shanu b mitzvotav You hallow us with Your commandments v tzivanu al n tilat yada-im. and bid us to wash our hands. d Fd i dÿ ` KExÄ,m lfr d K l«n Epi«dŸl `,ei zf v n A Ep«Ẅœ C w x W `.m i «cï z li h p l r Ep«Ë v e THE BLESSING OF BREAD The Zohar states that there is no angelic minister ruling over the five species of grain only the Holy One rules over them. Because of this, whoever treats bread disrespectfully, throwing it to the ground, will be pursued by poverty. Wheat represents the divine abundance in our physical world and bread represents the s firah of Malchut when it is connected with Zeir Anpin. It is said that wheat was once a tree. We begin our seder by blessing bread and as we eat it, we are invited to savor its flavor and meditate on how we are sustained by it in this world. 6 TU B SHEVAT SEDER haya eh oewiz xcq hvhy We fill our first cup with white wine. THE WORLD OF ATZILUT Atzilut is also known as the World of Divine Emanation and is fully conscious of its Divine origin. This world is in the state of perfect and eternal rectification, it is the world of the spirit. Each human being is comprised of five soul levels. The highest is Yechidah and it transcends all worlds. The next soul level, Chayah corresponds to the world of Atzilut. The Light of Ein Sof descends into the world of Atzilut and begins its journey of emanation to our world of Assiyah, also known as Malchut. We meditate during this section on the S firot since it is through them that we interact with the Light. This world is represented by the letter Yud of the Divine Name. We connect to this letter and allow it to penetrate to the core of our being during our meditation in this section. We do not bless or eat any fruit for there is only absorption in oneness with the Light in this world. % THE BLESSING OVER THE FIRST CUP OF WINE We bless white wine, which represents the purity of this world of the spirit, the part of our soul which is closest to the Light. 7 TU B SHEVAT SEDER haya eh oewiz xcq y Once when Rav Kook was walking in the fields, lost deep in thought, the young student with him inadvertently plucked a leaf off a branch. Rav Kook was visibly shaken by this act and, turning to his companion he said gently: sbelieve me when I tell you that I never simply pluck a leaf or a blade of grass or any living thing unless I have to. Every part of the vegetable world is singing a song and breathing forth a secret of the divine mystery of the creation. The words of Rav Kook penetrated deeply into the mind of the young student: For the first time he understood what it means to show compassion to all creatures. -Wisdom of the Jewish Mystics, pp. 80 hvhy We fill our second cup with 3/4 white wine and 1/4 red wine. THE WORLD OF BERIYAH Beriyah is known as the World of Creation. This world is the first of the three lower worlds. Here the initial substance of creation emerges out of Ein Sof and we begin to see the separation between the Creator and humankind. Beriyah is the spiritual origin of human intelligence. This is the world of the highest angels known as archangels and the world that corresponds to the level of soul known as n'shamah, the seat of the higher self. %% THE BLESSING OVER THE SECOND CUP OF WINE We bless white wine mixed with some red wine, which represents the beginning of separation between the Creator and humankind. 7

THE WORLD OF YETZIRAH Yetzirah is known as the World of Formation. There is increasing differentiation in this world because it is further removed from the direct Light of the Creator. Yetzirah is the spiritual origin of human emotion. This is the world of the angels and the world that corresponds to the level of the soul known as ruach, which is seated in the heart. The heart is fragile and delicate and needs a protective shield. %%% THE BLESSING OVER THE THIRD CUP OF WINE We bless a mixture of equal measures of white wine and red wine, which represents that this world is further removed from the direct Light of the Creator. If we could only taste every sensation passing through us, taste every breath we pulled into our lungs, were we to refuse to allow any joy or pain brought to any of our senses to pass through us unexamined and unappraised, then every breath, every movement, every thought, every apprehension, every fear and every caress would be a prayer of awe. Let us feel it all, let us embrace it all, let us love it all even that which we hate. Then we would not only eat, we would taste, we would not only hear, we would listen, we would not only be awake, but be aware we would not only be standing, but be upstanding, then we would not only be released from prison, we would be free: Free to say our thanks, free to feel our love, free to feel our pain, free to struggle, free to submit, and free to inspire the breath of life infusing all matter, all energy in all time and space. When that breath is our breath, then every breath will speak the secret holy Name. -Adaptation of the Nishmat Kol Chai 10
