4 A word of Torah From Rabbi Aaron Rubinstein If you re reading the portion of the Haggadah called Maggid, you reמגיד surely talking about slavery and liberation and while many people treat the biblical slavery narrative as a sacred myth rather than a chapter of history, the discussion of slavery and freedom could not possibly be more relevant. As we speak, people are seized, caged, and sold into servitude in Libya, a tragically lawless wreckage of a country. The global scourge of human trafficking is remarkable in scope. Abuse of workers people who pick or process the food we buy is a very real part of our American economic landscape. As we speak, waves of refugees risk perilous journeys in the hope of escaping a fate as dark as anything conjured up by the Egypt portrayed in our scripture. Our torah recounts a compassionate and bold daughter of Pharaoh scooping Moses from the river and news accounts, falling on numbed and callous ears, tally the latest numbers of those who drown during their doomed voyage. We have seen the pictures of the babies who weren t fortunate enough to be rescued by Pharaoh s daughter. Our Seders recount the ancient plagues that ravaged Egypt. What are the modern plagues that darken our own land dare we speak of those plagues or of our failure to meaningfully respond to them? Among the shining accomplishments of contemporary Jewish teachers (Arthur Waskow comes to mind; there are many others), is a serious effort to really personally experience leaving Egypt. When we read the charge that in each generation each of us is obligated to see ourselves as having left Egypt these are not empty words. Slavery is very cruel and very real and very much within our broken world. In between the delicious food and the delightful guests there s a message. Passover can and should be a galvanizing moment. Redemption will not come wrapped up in a napkin like the Afikomen being hunted down by the kids at the Seder.

5 A Message from our President, Evan Elmo Koplin I continue to be amazed at the variety of things we do with our resources! We are very fortunate to have group of volunteers always willing to pitch in and give 100+% in their efforts! I am very excited about the training Rabbi and I did with USCJ Sulam for Emerging Leaders- Very interesting ideas, not just for the Emerging Leaders program, but ideas for our overall membership. More to come on this program in coming months. Here are some interesting new ideas: Streaming of Purim Spiel and some of Rockin Shabbat on Facebook We got great feedback from those who could not attend but who logged on to watch We were surprised at number of CSI alumni who watched. We will expand on developing an alumni program in addition to working on streaming other events Use of our courtyard for Friday evening services Finally figured out issue with lighting With the weather improving, we ll work towards possibly having services outside Be on the look for plans this summer to hold Friday night services in Milledgeville and Warner Robins. Thanks to Ellen Goodrich for sharing an idea she observed at shul in Savanah. (Keep those suggestions coming as to programming you see or hear of at other shuls!) By now I assume you have received notice of increase in dues. Nobody likes to see increases in dues. As noted in the dues notification letter, we continue to strive to reduce expenses. At some point, you can only cut so far. Your CSI Finance Committee and Board feel that it is very important that we work with a balanced budget. While we have a strong balance sheet, we consistently strive to have an operational budget that breaks even. As said in my speech at the High Holidays, 109 family units! That is it. We need your support to maintain our Shul to keep things running as they are. Evan Elmo Koplin

6 March has been a very exciting month to celebrate our connection with ISJL (Institute of Southern Life)! We began with the weekend of March 2-4 and a visit from our ISJL Education Fellow, Carley Abramson. Carley was part of Rockin Shabbat and the adult service Friday night, and Shabbat morning services on Saturday. On Sunday morning Carley planned activities for all of the Sunday School classes centered around celebrating Dr. Seuss birthday, with Jewish conntected themes from several Dr. Seuss books. On Sunday, March 18 th, Susan Burden from B nai Israel in Fayetteville, Georgia, visited us with a very special Passover program. Susan and her son brought several of their Sunday School parents, teachers, and students for this joint program. The theme for this model seder was Passover in Space. Students were divided into several groups: Haggadah Troopers, Plague Fighters, Salt Water Squadron, Dayeinu Warriors, Pharaoh Force, Matzah Ball Commandos, and the Red Sea Rebels. Students rotated around the different Space Stations that included blasting off across the Red Sea, Zapping Pharaoh, Passover Madlibs, creating robotic recipes, as well as the traditional items in the order of the seder, and a craft table. We ended the morning with a delicious lunch thanks to Trish Hutten and Emily Piassick. All of this came about thanks to Lara Geller attending the ISJL Conference last summer and going to Susan s workshop! The students and teachers had a blast and we look forward to planning more programs together! Thank you to everyone who bought Passover candy from our Sunday School students! Our donations will serve many families in the Middle Georgia area who are in need of help. Items such as canned fish and beans, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, applesauce, canned fruits and vegetables, rice and pastas are all especially helpful. Please help contribute to Tikkun Olam by bringing a can with you on your way to services and/or religious school. Congregation Sha arey Israel is a partner with DAYBREAK, a daytime haven for members of our community who are either homeless or are in need of a place to spend a day with people; a place where they can shower, get a light snack, and feel part of a community. Donations are needed for the following supplies: shampoo/body wash; body lotion; paper towels; toilet tissue; 13 gallon trash bags; HE laundry detergent; bleach; disposable food service gloves; disposable razors; washcloths; spray deodorant; dish detergent; coffee; coffee creamers; coffee stirrers; sugar bags; powdered lemonade; canned fruit cocktails; crew and boot socks; tea bags; air disinfectant spray Daybreak has opened a boutique of gently used clothing. The store is called WEAR, and is located at 466 First Street. All donated items must be clean. Hangers are appreciated, but not required. Clothes for all members of the family are welcomed.
