4 The Gifts of Sukkot When I m not busy being overwhelmed by the onrush of all these holidays, I remember why I have such a soft spot for Sukkot. First, there s the (finally!) leaves starting to change, and there s the unique pleasure of the etrog s fragrance. There s sensation of chanting Hallel and shaking the lulav in the small chapel, and there s lunch and dinner and schmoozing and toasting in the local sukkot in Macon, Warner Robins, Americus, and Milledgeville. In between all that, thanks to the internet, I can hear some powerful drashot delivered in other shuls. Great words (brother in law) from Steve Weiss, and his dynamic associate Hal Rudin-Luria sharing Torah in shul (Bnei Jeshurun) in Pepper Pike, Ohio (lemme know if you d like the link). Powerful and moving sermons shared by Katie Bauman and Micah Greenstein, Memphis rabbis at Temple Israel. Here s why I mention these drashot at this time Sukkot challenges us to pivot from the introspection and fasting to bringing our values and hammer & nail into the world and get to the necessary work of repair, of Tikkun. Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur affirmed the truths of second chances and of honestly taking our own measure. Sukkot draws us outside in all our fragility and brokenness. With equal doses of reassurance and challenge Sukkot guides us to get out and do it, to join hands with friends and allies, to celebrate the joy of Torah by living it. Rabbi Aaron

5 Sunday and Hebrew School are off to a great start with many activities celebrating the many holidays on our calendar. First and foremost, thank you so much to Louis and Emily Piassick for putting together the two youth/family services on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Our kids had a wonderful time participating in the services with their families, opening the ark doors and reciting the many blessings. Thank you to Deborah Adler, Erica Wilkinson and Michael Kruger for helping with the Hebrew; A really big Yasher Koach to Jay Freedman, who came in from the big sanctuary to read the Torah portions. On September 9th, Blair Kruger and Bonnie Cornelius provided and distributed apples and honey to our kids, a sweet and very meaningful snack. September 23rd, our kids enjoyed our annual Cereal in the Sukkah. Prior to having breakfast, the kids helped decorate the CSI sukkah. Thank you to Bonnie Cornelius, Erica Wilkinson, Angie Brown, Shaw Bullington and Chrissy Crabtree for getting the various cereals (see photo next page), serving, setting up and cleaning up. Thank you to aids Nicole Hill and Amitai Ilan. All the classes participated in dancing with Sharona and Rabbi Aaron providing accordion backup. The seedling class had an activity where they were asked to design a sukkah (made with at least 3 design components, symbolizing the three sides of a sukkah). The sukkah had to be sturdy enough to hold an egg, so when the sukkah was dropped, the egg would not break. Sadly, all the eggs broke and the winner was decided based on creativity and design. Lilah Hutten (photo next page) designed a very colorful sukkah and was named the winner. All the kids designs were imaginative and beautifully designed. On September 30th, there was a Simchat Torah activity where the Torah was unrolled. (See photo next page of Shale Norwitz with daughter Samara). Thank you to our principals, Craig Wilkinson, Louis Piassic and David Corneilius. For a little shul, we have amazing volunteers who come in and give their precious free time, to make this school the little shul that could.

7 Macon Outreach Needs Your Support Please everyone, remember to bring food donations for the Macon Outreach Food Pantry. Our donations will serve many families in the Middle Georgia area who are in need of help. Items such as canned fish and beans, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, applesauce, canned fruits and vegetables, rice and pastas are all especially helpful. Please help contribute to Tikkun Olam by bringing a can with you on your way to services and/or religious school. Donations are needed for the following supplies: shampoo/body wash; body lotion; paper towels; toilet tissue; 13 gallon trash bags; HE laundry detergent; bleach; disposable food service gloves; disposable razors; washcloths; spray deodorant; dish detergent; coffee; coffee creamers; coffee stirrers; sugar bags; powdered lemonade; canned fruit cocktails; crew and boot socks; tea bags; air disinfectant spray Daybreak has opened a boutique of gently used clothing. The store is called WEAR, and is located at 466 First Street. All donated items must be clean. Hangers are appreciated, but not required. Clothes for all members of the family are welcomed. All profits from the sale of the clothing will go to support Daybreak. You can drop off your donations at DAYBREAK, 174 Walnut Street NOAH S ARK DONATION WALL Honor the children of CSI with a plaque acknowledging their important milestones and achievements up to age 18. Minimum donation for a plaque is $36.00 and $ for adopting an animal. These donations make a great newborn baby gift, Bar/bat mitzvah, graduation gift or special recognition of a CSI member s child.
