They will teach both new and traditional melodies that will be used in the Meeting House and Main Sanctuary Services this Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. They will also speak about the meanings of these prayers, and how the music enhances the texts. 4 Announcements Swan Point Cemetery Plots Available for Purchase We are pleased to announce that plots in our new burial section at Swan Point are now available to Temple Emanu-El members. Please contact the Temple Office for more information. A special discounted rate is available through December 31, 2018, so act soon! We need more Prayer Books and Humashim We still need more copies of the Siddur Lev Shalem so that there are enough copies in the Sanctuary when we have celebrations. We also need more Humashim so that everyone can follow the Torah reading. Please do not let cost be a barrier! The Tanakh: New Perspectives Instructor: Michael Satlow, Professor of Religious Studies and Judaic Studies at Brown University How should we read the Tankah? Is it a source of ethical behavior and Jewish law? An accurate history of ancient Israel? A political document created to give authority to certain interest groups? A myth? A literary fiction? This course will explore these, and other, approaches to the Tanakh, highlighting the diverse ways in which this pivotal text has been, and continues to be, read throughout history. 14 M E R C I F U L C O N V E R S A T I O N S O N R A C E October 9, 16, 30 November 6, 13 7:00PM Course fee: $36 Optional dinner served at 6:30pm $8 per meal / $40 for the course Legacy of Temple Emanu-El Rabbi Eli Bohnen and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Temple Emanu-El, in co-operation with the Rhode Island State Council of Churches, will hold a series of conversations on the dynamics of race in our culture. Merciful Conversations on Race explores how white privilege functions in society and in religious communities, and the ways that it negatively impacts people of color. The course seeks to create a positive and trusting space to explore why race conversations can be a struggle, provide help for overcoming this challenge, and opportunities to further racial reconciliation on both personal and systemic levels. These conversations will be based on a curriculum developed by the United Church of Christ, with materials adapted for conversations in a Jewish context. Rev. Betsy Aldrich Garland and Pastor Chontell Williams of the Rhode Island State Council of Churches, along with Rabbi Wayne Franklin, will guide the discussions.
