1 Vol. 58 Issue 8 August 2014 Av Elul congregationbethohr@gmail.com Synagogue Office: What is Tisha b Av? Apart from Yom Kippur, there is no fast day of greater significance on the calendar than Tisha b Av. On this date in history various calamities befell the Jewish people among them, the destruction of the First Temple in 586 B.C.E., the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E., and the expulsion of Jews from Spain in Why is it observed today? As a recollection of past oppression and loss of sovereignty, Tisha b Av links us to our own history. Through its observance we show solidarity with our ancestors sacrifices. Tisha b Av also reminds us not to take the freedom in which we live and the existence of the State of Israel for granted. These are all important messages we need to remember, especially now. Please join Rabbi Mishkin and the congregants of Beth Ohr On Monday evening, August 7:30 p.m. for Tisha B Av Services at Marlboro Jewish Center 1

3 How the Rabbinate has Changed Over the Years. While I was a rabbi in Sarasota I noticed some changes in the rabbinate. The following incident helps to illustrate this point. I had just begun as an assistant rabbi in Baltimore, Maryland and learned that my supervisor, the senior rabbi of Beth El Congregation was going to Hawaii for two weeks during that summer. While Rabbi Loeb was away I was placed in charge of this congregation of fifteen hundred families. On my first Shabbat, during the Torah procession, I greeted the congregants by shaking their hands firmly as I made my way around the sanctuary. It was only after Rabbi Loeb returned that I learned from him that I had already made my first mistake. The service was rather formal. We wore robes and miters and as we walked through the congregation led by the Hazan, Rabbi Loeb gently bowed toward individual congregants lining the aisles. I continued to shake hands with all of my new friends. Following that service Rabbi Loeb said to me, you have to remember Joel, that you are a rabbi not a politician. It is unbecoming for you to shake hands, just nod and acknowledge their presence. When I came to Sarasota and marched in the procession in the same fashion the leadership questioned me about the fact that I had refrained from shaking hands. I explained why and they said rather firmly, that is not the way we do things here. And so I began not only to shake hands during the procession but also to engage in brief conversations, finding out about who was present or absent from services and the reason why. The procession became very informal and conversational. It was the mid-nineties, Judaism was changing and congregants craved a more personal approach from their clergy. This fact became clearer when Rabbi Loeb taught me an important lesson about something as simple as making phone calls. One afternoon I was sitting in Rabbi Loeb s study and his secretary buzzed him. She said, Rabbi, there is a Mario Cuomo on the line. Clearly she was not familiar with the then-governor of New York City. Rabbi Loeb picked up the phone as the two men discussed a speaking engagement for Governor Cuomo in our congregation later that year. When Rabbi Loeb hung up the phone he said, Joel I am going to teach you an important lesson. You know how some rabbis have their secretary dial phone numbers for them and tell the party that Rabbi so and so is on the line, could you please hold? I want you to know that I never do that and I expect that you will follow my lead. The reason is straightforward. You see, Joel If the governor of New York City has time to dial his own phone, so do we! These changes are indicative of a new kind of rabbinate in the United States. It used to be that the rabbi was almost expected to be aloof. In this day and age I have learned that most people want to know their rabbi. They want to know that he or she is a real person and that he or she is approachable and easily accessible. I will try my best in the next several months to achieve that goal, to speak with you and to be there to help guide you in Jewish practices and tradition. I have only just begun and we have to get to know each other but one thing is certain. I look forward to conversations and meetings with many of you these first few months so that we can establish a healthy rapport between rabbi and congregant. I trust that you will be kind enough to give me some time to get to know and I will provide you many opportunities to get to know me. There is a new dawn for our congregation and it is most exciting. I hope that you will join me and that we shall greet this new dawn together. Rabbi Joel S. Mishkin 3

5 M C See previous page for description of photos PAYBACK Comment by Ed Mendlowitz You have Yahrzeit and need a Minyan? So do most of us. The cost of there being a Minyan for you is for you to make sure we have a Minyan for others If you are not a regular, then payback by coming 3 extra times during the year. If everyone did that, we would never have a problem. This applies to Friday night, Shabbos morning and Sunday morning. Coming 1 extra time to each of these three services insures we have a Minyan for everyone that needs one. We are all in this together. Do your part! Also, try to come at least once to each Shiva Minyan. We are all in this together. Don t be a taker without payback.
